man, i'm currently updating (at least trying) to pro tools 6.4.1 from 5.1.3
i'm on a hunt for some used plugins for this system.
anybody that wants to help PM me.
i'm out of money so we'll see what i end up with.
i still have PT 5 on a partition to use the waves bundle and mcdsp bundle i have for that version. . . PT 6 is pretty ancient let alone using 5, geez.
well, at least it still sounds great while i'm listening and getting used to the room during computer havoc.
the Stiz build diary - FINISHED!

Don't know if I missed it, but what are the dimensions of the room?
wow, i def should have posted that somewhere. it's in the sketchup file, but that's annoying just to find out dimensions.
well, the main room as it stands is about 22' X 10.5'. the helmholtz resonator's take it in- between 6" to 1' depending on where it is.
the vocal booth is around a standard 3 x 5 x 7. thats WxLxH
Same dimensions (in total) as mine. I'm at 10.5 x 11 (control) 10.5 x 12.5) I'm really going over the costs for materials to do those sofits. Mike - check out my latest posts, and tell me if you think it's doable with my door placement. BTW - I got your VM and will call you once I put the kids down tonight (if that's ok with you).well, the main room as it stands is about 22' X 10.5'. the helmholtz resonator's take it in- between 6" to 1' depending on where it is.
yeah Brad thats fine. if it doesn't work tonight, another night. i'm here. haha.
well, as it turns out. . . since i shut down Dynamike Studios a few years ago there is a Dj using DJ Dynamike in my area. He's been playin out a ton. i think his name may have surpassed mine. That being said, it confirmed my uncertainty about using U-N-I. I have to go back. It's better that way. Everyone around here knows me from my stage name Jive the Universal aka: Jive the U-N-I.
whatev. just a name.
how come TDM plugins are so friggin expensive???? man.
Thanks. I'm trying to envision a similar layout to your's (single room) as my room is close to the same length, just a bit narrower. As much as I'd like to break mine up into 2 rooms, I still need the room for band rehearsals, so I'm kinda stuck with the single room layout. BTW, keep up the good work, I'm enjoying the build and look forward to seeing what kind of results you get.well, the main room as it stands is about 22' X 10.5'. the helmholtz resonator's take it in- between 6" to 1' depending on where it is. the vocal booth is around a standard 3 x 5 x 7. thats WxLxH
single room is what i'm used to.
people make such a stink about it. to me it's no big deal.
so i put headphones on when getting levels.
so i gotta do a test recording of the drums and playback to make
sure the sounds are good.
big deal. it's way easier for me to deal with.
Mike -
Do these sofits NEED to be "air tight" - especially on the bottom? If I build them, they'll (each) cover an electric outlet.

Brad, i know for sure the top needs to be airtight. If it's not, the sound inside the soffit will bounce around, then sneak out the enclosure somewhere , thus messing up the whole point of the soffits. if the bottom is a separate area, it may not need to be, but i would seal it the best you can to get the best results. maybe you can build a little 'channel' to get to the outlet, but still keep it airtight.
isn't there another thread going right now about a bass trap covering an outlet? you posted on it right? this may be the best solution to you situation.
Doesn't the slot in the top and bottom of the speaker box - nullify the air-tight-ness? Or do you mean that the whole box needs to be air tight except for the air channel? Does the top of the sofit (all trimmed out with wood) screw up the bass trapping of your room? And most importantly, what is the real *purpose* for sofit mounting your speakers? Thanks!Brad, i know for sure the top needs to be airtight. Never a waste of time. I've enjoyed watching your thread grow over the summer and on to now... I like the wood work you've done with the flooring and traps. Looks slick and I hope to have my own unique touch once I have my framing complete. Great job; now go make music.THANKS FOR LOOKING THOUGH! i am getting very excited. i feel like i'm all alone, i barely am getting any comments on my build. i wonder if i'm wasting my time posting all these pics.

yes, you spotted the 'sacrifice' of my soffits. my monitors are self powered, thus give off a lot of heat. they need these openings for ventilation. it would have been better to have a separate power supply and a fully airtight soffit.Doesn't the slot in the top and bottom of the speaker box - nullify the air-tight-ness?
yes in my case, it needs to be.Or do you mean that the whole box needs to be air tight except for the air channel?
yes, this is one of the sacrifices of a combo room. the angled walls of the soffits and resonators connected help break up flutter echo (when tracking, not mixing) but they don't do any bass trapping. though i haven't tracked yet, i'm not too worried about it being a problem. there is enough thick absorbtion around that my bass should be under control enough.Does the top of the sofit (all trimmed out with wood) screw up the bass trapping of your room?
the real purpose, in my words. . . is to *focus* the sound coming from the monitors all to one plain (the bezel). and because of the focus, and in correlation with the slot resonators and cloud, when the sound hits my ears it will be completely pure, a reflection free zone. (search 'RFZ' here) then you can mix in a near perfect room. i'm sure perfect is not the best word for the situation, but you know what i mean. here's the main threads that helped in my research/build of the soffits. i was also torn on whether or not to do it too. besides the reflection issues they help/fix, they look bangin. when anyone comes by to peep the studio, they always comment on them. along with the clouds and resonators! http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... sc&start=0 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... it&start=0 http://www.johnlsayers.com/Studio/Pages/Giles.htm http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... ew&start=0 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... ew&start=0 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7751 http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... le&start=0 and here's a nice thread on a combo room, not sure where you're at with 2 rooms or combo. http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... om&start=0 it's Marc's build. huge diary, good luck sorting through this stuff. haha. i haven't looked at Marc's in a while but i still have it bookmarked. And most importantly, what is the real *purpose* for sofit mounting your speakers?
well there has to be a hole for the cord so that eliminates air tight. and if you have powered speakers then you better vent them right? i don't think air tight is really needed. but one should make the holes that are needed as small as possible that is one reason i don't use powered speakers my speakers are mounted in a cement block with one tiny hole coming up from the bottom for the wire. they sure are not air tight and they sound amazing! Thanks guys! Brad, i know for sure the top needs to be airtight. If it's not, the sound inside the soffit will bounce around, then sneak out the enclosure somewhere , thus messing up the whole point of the soffits.
sorry Brad, no pics yet!!
been mixing a some rock stuff, it's so easy on my ears in there!
just had my first paying session tonight too, an emcee (thats a rapper for the ol heads) that i've worked with for years.
the vocal booth sounds awesome. it's great how all the sounds going in are 'true'. no weird frequencies to eq out before even starting the real mix.
i can't wait to track drums and guitars soon.
i have an annoying comment about my new central station too, just figured i'd vent.
the thing is really sweet, but there is no L/R individual mutes!!! maybe its just me, but sometimes i need to only hear the left or the right channel. . . to test delays and panning and such. how could such a nice piece of equipment lack this feature? crazy.
okay, thats all for now.
here's some pics of the finished room ready to rock. still only mixed and tracked vocals in there. gonna get a drummer in soon.
absolutely stunning!
great work!
Yeah, pretty amazing!!! Looks good, and I am sure that it sounds even better from the amount of work you put into those treatments.
Great job dude!
Hallo dynamike!!
Well done it looks great! you were one the threats i was folowing while i was tring to figure out how to build my home studio. I want to build it, walls and ceiling like SAE Designs but becouse lamber is not good in greece I float 5cm metal stands 5cm rockwool 50kg and 2 layers of 12.5 mm plasterboard .so, finaly I have a 4m x 3m room now  which i am gong to frame it like you did, angle the side walls 6deg as you will see in the sketch file and slope the ceiling from 2.50 to 2.60 and make it absorbent.
My question is on the slot resonators, is there going to make much difference if i continuo the slot resonators to the soffits which means i will have to make an opening door resonator on the left side or live it as it is and follow your measurements for a broadband resonator? Is it right to continiou it only from the right side?
What about the rear bass-traps i am thinking making them superchank filled with rockwool. what Do you think ? why you made superchank and not make them like johns bass traps? http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm
Thanks in advance
steve
Hey Steve! Thanks for the compliments. First off, how come everyone is so much better than me with Sketchup? Okay, to your question. . . If your monitors are soffit mounted, as it looks from the drawing, you're missing the main point of the angled resonators. you're absolutely going to want them all the way to the soffits. They don't just absorb, they help direct the reflections to the back of the room. If they aren't catching all the 'rays' coming from the monitors, they won't be fully doing their job. If your monitors are going to be on your desk, or on stands, you only the soffits to go as far as your monitors are. And put as much absorbtion on the front wall as possible. Do a search here for "RFZ" short for "Reflection Free Zone" Make sure you get a good handle on what you're really trying to accomplish with this. Hope this helps.Hallo dynamike!! My question is on the slot resonators, is there going to make much difference if i continuo the slot resonators to the soffits which means i will have to make an opening door resonator on the left side or live it as it is and follow your measurements for a broadband resonator? Thanks for the reply dynamike!
I am going to make 30deg bass traps at the frond and place the speakers on stands against the traps and in the future if i change my genelec 8040 to a speaker which is easy to soffit mound i will.
Do you know if the bass trap corners have to be hardwood or must be absorptive with cloth at the frond?
steve
steve, i trust a quick search here gave you your bass trap answer.
anyway, the studio is still just as amazing as before, and my Sytek preamps are just as amazing as i was hoping.
the vocal booth sounds great, but definitely sounds 'small' and tight.
luckily my main room is treated properly. a more open natural vocal sound comes easily out there.
still no drums yet.
i did mix some rock stuff. you can here it at my new myspace page.
oh yeah, I CHANGED THE NAME AGAIN!!!!!!
hahaha. this time its official. the business cards and email/myspace messages are flyin.

say hi.
D-M,
That place looks great as does the brochure on Myspace. I think the only thing that place needs is a nice DIY double rack for your gear. I just got done building mine. Also just finished up my bass-traps. I'll be doing a major update soon.
Great job again!
Super job on your studio! Maybe I missed it somewhere, but I didn't see what you did for HVAC and ductwork????
i just sweat a lot. actually, there is a door that leads outside, so when it gets stuffy, i open the door for a few minutes to do some air exchange.
it works so far. i'm approaching my first summer with the studio, we'll see how hot it gets.
