I decided this weekend I'd do my best Dan Fitzpatrick impression... No studio progress to report! ;-) Y'all ever just get sick of working on your damned studios?! But seriously... Hopefully this coming weekend will be different. I feel some rough electrical motivation coming on. If not, I'll fake it! --Keith

No. Just get too damned tired working the regular job, and sometimes have no energy to work on mine! I'm still too damned determined to get it done. Question is, what the heck do I do when I finish? Oh, that's right, make some music!
Did i hear my name mentioned? 8) I HAVE been working on the room. I swear.
Hey Dan, you know the routine: piccies or it didn't hapen! ;-) Had dinner with my mom tonight, and she swung by the house so I could show off the progress. She was impressed. :-) I'm a few weeks away from working on ventilation and A/C. I'm planning to build those big, beefy silencers, and I think I know how I'll be going about that. I'll have to post some detailed drawings of that here pretty soon. I have a feeling that my plan may be a bit overkill. (Ha! Like I care! :P) I'll be interested in y'all's feedback on that. Stay tuned! 8) --Keith

Constantly!!! And it gets worse the longer I work on it! I have had the pleasure though of actually using it in it's current state to make some sample recordings. Unfortunately, to my ears anyway, the recordings sound pretty good considering the equipment I had available (the drums were mic'ed with 3 really cheap dynamic mics (like under $60 for all three!). Note that there is almost nothing done to these tracks yet - it was just our first shot at seeing how a high-school garage band would sound. :-) You can hear a sample of what we did last weekend. The genre is Christian Heavy Metal Screaming Punk. Do they have a Grammy category for that? :-) Keith, one of the reasons you might have slowed down a little and the enthusiasm has waned is your spending soooooo much time here helping others get their studios designed and built (myself included!). Hang in there! There are going to be good days and bad. Just the sheer number of hours/days/months you've worked on this makes it a statistical certainty. We'll be there with you every (remaining) step of the way to pat you on the back or kick you in the behind as the situation warrants. :-) Now....I think I've got a thread to update somewhere on this forum.... len
Thanks much for the combo pep-talk and contribution-appreciation post, Len. :) I wish I had weekend progress to report, but my schedule was full of sleep deprivation catch-up, social plans, and "work" work resulting from critical staff shortage I mentioned before. :( --Keith
Keith, I think a large part of the value of this site (at least to me) is the encouragement we give each other. It certainly is as important as the knowledge base we have to draw from! I can't tell you how many time you've encouraged me probably without you even knowing it! len
Aloha, What's this? Keith, you've fallen off the first page...again!  Aloha 8)
Aloha and Mahalo! I've gone from having acouple of Dan Fitzpatrick weeks (a.k.a., being a slacker ;-)) to having a couple of Steve/knightfly weeks (a.k.a., insanely busy with life and work crap). We had a major midnight-to-0600 upgrade at work this week. Hopefully I'll get going on wiring the room this weekend and will have some progress photos to share soon! And there should be lots of opportunity for work over Thanksgiving weekend! --Keith
Well, believe it or not, I actually dragged my butt out into the 50°F garage to spend a few hours pulling Romex. Some might have been uncomfortable working in that temperature, but it doesn't bother me at all. 100°F bothers me; 50°F is downright comfy to me if I'm moving around. It wasn't the most productive day, that's for sure... But at least I broke the logjam of sloth and work-related stress and exhaustion. ;-) No pics... Y'all know what wire looks like. ;-) --Keith

But we don't know what your wiring job looks like... You've been quite quiet lately on your thread. Either you've been working on the room, or just life in general. I wasn't on much last week as I was too busy working myself in the studio. Anything new?
hahahaha -- good one, Dan! And I deserve it! The "wiring" I did was, literally, just stapling wire along the backs and sides of the inner leaf studs and tops/sides of the ceiling joists... No boxes yet, since I've decided I'm going to do surface mounted boxes. I'm not doing any connections at this stage -- it's "rough electrical," which (for those who don't know) means it needs to be inspected before connections are allowed. Heh -- you think I'm being quiet? We'll see about that... --Keith
Holy jumpin vu meters batman, Keith you don't have this studio done yet???!!??? What am I going to do with you man? I am going to be out that way on my Harley this coming summer...you want I stop by and finish it up for ya? LOL!! Just bustin your chops bro! How ya been? Looks like she's comin along. ~Andy
Consider my ass kicked, bro! Year, things have slowwd down a lot after an impressive progress spurt. This weekend's excuse was seeing Trans-Siberian Orchestra and getting a rotten cold. Dude, if you're cong through town, it would be awesome to get together with you! :D What's the occasion? Surely I'll be done by then, ready for us to jam. --Keith

Just wanted to give you a little pep talk.... but no guilt. I want you to be happy ... building your studio. 8) Plus I had to get your thread off of page 2....
Sharward...You're Slackin'! Give us an update...
Yeah man, UPDATE... you have run some wire right? Pics please
now is my opportunity to get crackin and catch up to sharward
No kidding -- I've been in the pit stop for quite a while, Dan -- so now's your chance to make up some laps! Gentlemen, I had really hoped to have some pics to share this weekend. Saturday turned into Sunday. I dunno -- I've just had a heck of a time mustering up the energy and motivation to go out there. Maybe the cooler weather and fewer daylight hours is having an impact on me. That, and the holiday parties, along with some late nights at work... I know... Excuses, excuses...  This weekend is probably not going to be much better, being Christmas weekend and all, with Mrs. Sharward's grandparents visiting her folks... We'll see. One thing that's been weighing on my mind -- I actually do have quite a bit of work ahead of me before my next inspection, and I've got to get that in within six months of my last one, which was was February 9! Yikes! I may have to try to get some kind of interim inspection before the end of January, which will extend my time... Ugh... :( Y'all keep kicking me. --Keith
Y'all keep kicking me.
THUMP! Hey Sharward, don't be giving up now. Yeah, I know, it can be difficult at times to get motivated. I've wrapped up my 3rd year now, working on the 4th, so I can relate. Here's a small trick...no matter how big or small...get at least one thing done each day. Throw in a few screws, pull a wire, take some measurements for your next cuts, stage materials for your next burst of energy. It all comes together, and all has to be done at some point. So all those days of just one thing add up quick. THUMP!
Great advice, Aaron. :-) It's been a while, but I recall a few times dragging my butt out there to accomplish one small thing, but then one thing leads to another, and then I end up doing something that resembles actual progress! ;-) --Keith
That's usually how it works. Start small...then you get motivated to do more...
Yeah, I know... Another week went by without an update. :( This coming three day weekend (with New Year's day) should be a good one for getting some stuff done though. :) I think I know how I'm going to handle the stress of the upcoming inspection deadline. Rather than going for the traditional hybrid inspection that includes framing, rough electrical, mechanical, and plumbing (although there is no plumbing in my case), I think I'll plan to just get the framing inspected, plus maybe the rough electrical if I'm done with it by then. I should be able to do that, and then I'll have another six months. Hopefully I won't need another six months... ...But at least then I won't risk the permit expiring -- which, as I've mentioned before, would be very bad, requiring my plans to be reapproved based on current codes, costing me extra plan check fees, etc. My wife and parents will be going to Walt Disney World for a week in late January, during which time I won't be working on any partial garage conversion studios. Actually, scratch that -- there is one partial garage conversion studio on which will most likely get a chance to do a bit of work.......... ;-) Yes, I am hoping to make a daytrip over to see Marc's work and hang out with him. 8) Hopefully our schedules will be able to allow for that. Oh, I saw two episodes of Deconstruction a couple of days ago. Way cool. 8) I saw video of Underwriters Laboratories doing a fire test on a gypsum wallboard wall assembly, including a fire hose pressure water test! I didn't know this until I saw it: after the fire, they ran a fire hose against the wall at a certain distance, and the hose just tore through the drywall on the "fire" side -- but the drywall on the opposite side, while still damaged from the fire, stayed intact in spite of the intense water pressure. 8) Here's a video snippet of a wall and window getting a hurricane test. Fun stuff!! 8) --Keith
Ahhhhh, progress. :-) First of all, happy new year everyone... And happy two year anniversary to me: this thread began on January 2, 2005. :-) I'm pretty close to being done with rough electrical now. The room itself is wired (pictures to ome, soon, I promise). I'm now at the point of bridging the room to the service panel. All along, I had planned to run those lines in the attic. However, I failed to recognize something I discovered today. I decided to remove the cover on the service panel, and that's when it came to me: there's only one "auxiliary" raceway (conduit) leading from the panel to the attic. It's 3/4" and nearly full, thanks to the 50 amp 240 volt (~6 guage x 4) spa circuit the previous owner had installed. I plan to use that overkill wire for my mini split. So, with no room in that conduit for four new circuits, I had to come up with a Plan B. Conduit on the exterior of the building? No way. Ripping the drywall off the garage wall to run a new raceway into the attic? I thought about it briefly... But the knockout in the service panel was not easy to get to at all. That left me with a somewhat undesirable option: conduit on the interior of the garage. I can live with that. I went to Home Depot to buy the pieces-parts, just in time to roll out the door as they closed for the day. :-) I started to piece them together already. I'll finish that this week and run the wire in it. Once I'm done with that, I think I may be ready for a combo rough electrical and framing inspection. Mechanical will have to wait. I just need something inspected to keep my permit from lapsing in February. Hopefully I can do the conduit work during the week. It's kind of fun, so I'm motivated. :-) --Keith
