Hallo Again! i forgot to tell you that on top of the rockwool or sand, i dont know what is better :?: :?: :?: i am going to put 19mm mdf then 3 or 4 mm roof felt 30kg and then 21mm wooden floor. over this floor i am going to build inner angled walls where the ceiling is going to be based, so there is going to have weight on top. Do i have to glue all the layers or just screw and nail them? thanks steve
Hi Steve, When I first started researching studios, building, etc. My first thought was to use sand. If my room were in another scenario, I possibly would consider it again as well, but I had to level the floor (nearly a 3" difference from one side to the other), and also about possible moisture (being in a basement) so I opted for the mineral wool solution. Sand is definately more dense than mineral fiber. It also settles more over time, which could leave you with some surfaces not being fully dampened on the floor. (probably the least of your worries though.) Sand is heavy! And depending on what the structure is under this floor, you may need to consider or consult structural engineer to support any loads, (including your frame). When I built my floor, I glued only the first layer down against the frame. You may want to put some other type of mass loaded vinyl or similar between your layers of subfloor (optional). Not sure of your isolation requirements. I have some structure borne noise, but I think most of it is because my sub is currently sitting directly on my floor. Once I isolate it some, I think it'll make a difference. But my floor in general sounds pretty solid with what I've done.
Hey Aaronw thanks for the replay! Yes you are right is going to be very heavy to cover 8cm hight of 12 square meters and i might have problem with the building stracture as well so, i will go for the mineral wool solution. I wont mind to have the same isolation as my walls and ceiling which is 5cm metal stands and 5cm 50kg mineral with 2 layers of 12.5 cm plasterboard what I would not like to happen is the floor rezonating in certain frequencies:? so, do you think a 50kg mineral wool will fine for the sub floor? Thanks steve
Greetings Everyone, I'm sorry I haven't posted anything new recently. I've been dealing w/ a pinched nerve in my left arm/should/neck that has kept me from any progression on the studio. It's been too painful and numb or tingly to really do much productive. So I've kind of been at a stand still, and the daily gig has been tight on the finances, so it's been crazy. But I'm still here, try to pop online when I get a chance. My schedule has kept me burned out from doing much else, plus the nerve thing, so I've just been taking it easy. For those in the area, my annual party is next weekend on 4/18. Stop by or drop me an email for directions. I'll try and pop in the next few days and answer a few questions in the tech forum. Thanks. Aaron
Sorry about your pinched nerve! It sucks when medical stuff gets in the way of progress. I’m just getting back on track with my studio after half a year of doing very little because of a major blood clot in my leg. Hope you mend fast.
Sorry to hear about your injury Aaron, hope ye recover soon.
:D Hi, i'm french, so excuse me for my english. Well, I'm building a home studio whith a floating floor. I use Acoustipad with wood. You can see pictures of my building at this address : http://www.myspace.com/bool Have good readings Rémy, from FRANCE, French Riviera
Greetings all. Feels like forever since I've posted. I blinked and this year is nearly over. I hope everyone has been doing well. Well, I've been slowly trying to get back into the construction phase again. I've been side tract w/ several different things this year, and low $$$ hasn't helped. So that's my status. Still here, still constructing. Yeah, I know, going on 5 years now. What the heck! Anyway, I still owe pix, so I'll try and post some of them soon too. Aaron
YEA! Been waiting on the sidelines for an update!
Hello All!!! Well, some good news on the electronics front. I've made arrangements to purchase the console, 2" tape machine, cue system and old set of monitors for a SLAMMIN! Deal! Someone in CO was also parting out one, so I bought some spares and over the weekend, I now have all 36 input channels working and functional! Sweet! For those that don't know, this is the old Soundcraft 2400 console, that had it's first life at the Grand Ole Opry, then was home @ Flatwood Studio, and is now calling Artifact Recording as it's home. This beauty has lots of history behind it. I also scored a nice old Lexicon 224 from a friend of mine for a great deal as well this past week. So on the gear front, I'm rockin!!!! I'll have to do some more recordings in the studio, to help w/ paying for the rest of the materials to finish the build out. But hey, it all works! :D
Knowledge unused seeps away. Here I am after 6 years re-reading my old posts to figure out how to build my next studio. ROFL. Gotta Love it. AFter a LONG hiatus and a ton of jumping around, I am building a new studio in my Basement Dimensions are 21x13 for the Main room and 11x17 for the Studio. Glad this thread went nowhere.
Hai Bryan :) Funny, I see more and more peeps comming back to this forum after being absent for... too damn long! Love to see what yer gonna cook up for ye next room
Greetings All, Yep, still here. I've been so busy the last couple years, including getting engaged, I'm not here as often as I would like to be. I haven't done much construction this past year, but I'm actually the past few weeks, slowly been trying to do some more construction on the studio. Yeah, I know. It's been 6 years I've been working on this studio  And I have so many pics I need to add too. I was actually laying some tile down this weekend in the back room where I'll have some storage area for just stuff. I'll try and find some time in the coming weeks to go through and find the pictures, and get them uploaded. One of my tracking rooms is currently filled with my Fiances stuff right now, until we can go through stuff and figure out what to keep, get rid of, or find a place to put it. Anyways, Thanks for reviving the thread. I'm actually looking forward to updating the posts here and update everyone on the status. Aaron
Hi Aaron - getting engaged is much more fun than building :) If only it would last as long :D
Hehe, Yeah it is! Except the construction is cheaper. LOL.

Nothing fancy. 2 pairs of soffit mounted speakers (for one) some Big Monitors and my near fields. Going with a surround sound room. A Lot more room for comfort. WIsh I had 3 additional feet in width though. But. HEY!!. LOL. We just finished clearing the control room half of the basement. Now for the live room. Looking forward to this build. A lot wiser this time.
