Just finished my bass hangers and thought I would post some pictures. I constructed the hangers using celotex fiberboard and then gluing and taping on insulation. I used fiber glass insulation that I had removed from a bunch of left over flex ducting. Because the fiberboard is fairly flimsy I cut up a plastic tube and glued it into the hole I drilled in it. I then ran some wire through the tubes and hung the hangers from some small eyelet screws. It was neat to see the effect others have talked about where you move one hanger and all the other hangers start to move.

My soffits are coming along nicely. I built the speaker boxes out of 3/4" plywood. They are very tight around the speakers. I filled the upper half of the soffits with fluffy fiberglass insulation. The soffit baffle is made out of 3/4" OSB. There is a removable baffle around the speaker so I can remove the speaker if I need to.

The rear soffits didn't have room for hangers so I just stuffed the lower half with rock wool and the upper half with fluffy fiberglass.

Starting to look really cool! Nice build, and really curious how it will look when you've finished it..
Yeah, I'll second that! It's looking great! - Stuart -
Thanks guys! I'm going to Ecuador and Peru for most of February and I'm trying hard to finish the control room before I leave. I'm further along that the photos show and I'll post more soon.

Go a little further south, and you'll be getting close to where I live! Buen viaje! - Stuart -
I waved when she went past, John! But I don't think she saw me... :) Actually, I've been following her trip ever since she started. Brave kid! Her parents flew in to Chile, then way down south to wait for her, when they rented a plane and flew out to meet her in the middle of the ocean. Good for her, too! That's the Aussie spirit, for sure! - Stuart -
Wow! I was just reading through her blog and it sounds like quite an adventure. I spent a lot of my childhood on sail boats but I can't imagine going around the world solo.
we saw the footage from the plane with her parents flying above her. Stuart - why didn't she sail through the Magellan strait which surely would be safer than rounding the horn??

Beats me! I'm not a sailor at all, and I've never even been that far south in Chile (only made it as far as Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, which I really like). I even have trouble navigating an inflated inner tube across the swimming pool! So I don't have much of a clue about sailing at all... Seriously, maybe it has something to do with the rules for qualifying for the record books? I know she had to make a huge detour to cross over the equator in order to meet those requirements, so maybe the route she takes has something to do with that. I just admire the kid's pluck, vision and ambition! Most kids her age are only worried about downloading the latest cool ringtone to their iPhone before anyone else, or yapping about some rock star or movie star the glimpsed at the mall. But Jessica is out there in the middle of the roughest ocean in the world, all by herself, navigating around a part of the planet that has killed numerous sailors just like her over the centuries, and she's thinking it is cool when she glimpses land distantly through the freezing mist, for the first time in 3 months! Pretty amazing kid. Way, way more than just merely head-ad-shoulders above the rest of her age group. They don't even come close to rising to the level of her ankles, if you ask me. I wonder what she plans to do for an encore!!!!! :) - Stuart -
A recording sign I made out of an old exit sign.

That recording sign is cool! Did you set it up on a standard switch, or will you hook it up to a mixer/controller GPI output or DAW recording button? Nice work on the door too.
I just have it wired to a regular switch.
Work is on hold in the studio as I am on vacation in Ecuador for 3 weeks. It’s an amazing country although we had quite an adventure when we arrived. We were leaving the airport late at night and were on the on-ramp to the highway when a car zoomed past us, cut in front of us, and slammed on its brakes. Guys with guns started to jump out but our driver (my stepdad’s cousin) plowed the car out of the way and sped down the highway. The car followed us and for about 10 minutes we in a high speed chase, weaving in and out of traffic, honking our horn, and flashing our lights. The car was right behind us and our driver suddenly cut over 3 lanes and took an exit. The car following us didn’t manage to get over so we lost them. We ended up paying a police car to escort us to where we are staying. It definitely shook us up but we are staying on the coast in a small town and it feels safe here. I’m taking it easy here with my only goal being to have at least one mango a day. It’s snowing at home and it’s in the 90’s here so I feel good. I was trying to finish construction on the control room before I left and while I am close it’s not quite done.

Ah the memories! You take care now and don't you worry about the possibility of having that same kind of road trip when you guys try to get out of there! Have a drink on me, Brien
wow lief - sounds like quite an adventure - the studio is looking real good mate :)
Thanks guys, I didn’t feel I had room to do hangers in the rear wall so I just I stuffed it with insulation. The center has 3 layers of 3” Rockwool. The angled sides have half Rockwool and half fluffy fiberglass insulation. Its neat talking into the rear wall as sound just disappears.

I finished the trim around the windows. With the slat resonators the walls look incredible thick. For the front speakers I made a removable frame around the speakers but for the rear speakers the whole bezel is removable. It is made out of ¾” OSB with a layer of finished ½ plywood glued to it.

I made all of the cloth frames out of ¾ plywood cut in to 1 ½” strips. The cloth was stretched over the frames and stapled. I used Lou's method for attaching the frames using finish nails and cutting off the heads before hammering them all the way in. I then used a needle to pull the cloth up. It looks really good and if I ever need to remove the frames it shouldn’t be too hard. I put all of the speakers in and wired them up. I set the bass control to -3 on all of the speakers. I have to say my speaker sound really really good! It sounds like the center speaker is on even when it isn’t. I can’t wait to start mixing in my room! I still have to make clouds for the control room. I am thinking of making 3 4’x4’ clouds and 6 2’x4’ clouds. I also need to do a lot of trim. Then I am done with construction for the control room and it only took me 4 years. Of course I still need to wire everything up but it feels really good to be so close to being done with at least one room. I mostly do postproduction so I can start doing some work in the studio even though the other rooms aren’t done. I’ll be focusing on the vocal booth next.

4 years or not ... that is some beautiful work. I'm going to have to wait more than 4 yrs to get mine done so in the meantime I'll just drool over the pictures here. Nice nice work!
Yeah, what the man said! Congratulations! If it sounds even half as good as it looks, then it must sound superb. So I'll be doing some drooling, too.... - Stuart -
