Hi chaps – Hope you’re all well!
A massive quick update, but first, once again an even more heartfelt thank you for all the kind words, so very much appreciated guys, it really meant a lot to us both.
Quick off topic:

Right that’s enough of that, back to business. Wednesday morning and this lady turns up in a truck with my first load of gear.

So then guys it’s all full on again. I pick the monitoring up next Wed, and then all the other stuff still to come. Peripherals, mics, stands, patchbays, all manner of connectors, panels, pop shields – Man it all scares the hell out of me.
Now I am fully aware that help and advice re kit is not for this forum, but if the Mods don’t mind, I’d just like to say the following here rather than start a new thread elsewhere that could be missed. If any of you up here are using the DM 4800 and are able to offer help when surely needed, would you kindly p.m. me as I’ve set myself a ridiculously steep learning curve, but hey, that’s me!
I’ve already registered with the Tascam users forum here:

Very many thanks folks,
Kind regards as always, love to you and yours,
Lou & Sarah. 8) 8)About time you showed up!!! ...Bastard! ;)
Sounds like you had a great time my friend, and I am of course very happy for you. Good luck with the Tascams...
Congrats Lou and Sarah!
And, congrats to the Tascams for their new home..... 8)
Very nice
but stop starring at the Tascams and get them in the control room :P
Congrats on your studio, marriage and the "new arrivals". Just a hint on the 4800 . . . the "MODULE" button is your friend.
it looks like lifes treating you well lou. :D
Woah, you don't come here for a few months and look what you miss! Congratulations, Lou! That's a build I didn't expect to see in your thread here! HAHA! That's awesome! :)
Hey Lou
Long time and all that...
Many congrats on your wedded bliss...!
I have made great use of the Ultratouch cotton I collected from you back in May and thought it was about time to pat you on the back in public...
According to Lou, I am the first 'outsider' to pay a visit to his studio facility and, frankly, it rather took my breath away.
I am in the process of finishing a studio build in an industrial unit and it pales into the shadows compared to Lou's build...obviously he has more concerns with containing the noise due to nearby housing etc. but the quality and attention to detail is suberb.
I have seen the orange sofa first hand and it is something to behold...!
Anyway, just wanted to sing the man's praises - you won't meet a finer, more helpful bloke and I really appreciate the Ultratouch cotton as it has helped us out enormously.
Very best wishes Lou and next time I'm down Sarf, I'll be in touch for another jaunt to your local...
Jez
Good morning fellow builders and firstly, may I wish a joyous and memorable Independence Day to all our American brethren!
I’m pushed for time so this is a quick update on what’s been happening. Thanks as always chaps for the kind and encouraging comments, and please forgive me for not addressing you all personally.
Well last Thursday I took the 360 mile round trip to Shrewsbury to pick up my monitoring! On Friday Peter at Studiopeople had to fly down to my part of the world to visit a local Radio Station. He brought with him all his test equipment so that we could finallyl test the room! :D :D
Now the gear is not in yet but as you can imagine I couldn’t wait to fire up at least half the system to hear it in action for the first time. So, we decided to ‘bodge’ an untidy pre-install just to get the idea.
Here’s Peter with the gadgets.

And then 2 hrs of pink noise with all manner of acoustic tests both left and right/Front to rear etc revealed what I knew to be true. An unbelievably flat and accurate listening environment!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6522_IMG.jpg
The white line running left to right at the top of the device is the pre-stored frequency response of the left monitor. The red bars are showing (in real time) the frequency response of the right monitor!
As you can see – perfect symmetry, no nasty reflections, no annoying peaks or troughs. Proper schematic charts to be posted once all data has been collated.
Dudes I have to tell you that the end result of all this, is that NO treatment is required, and that my control room sound has left everyone who’s heard it speechless. As for isolation, I had some friends round Friday night, we went into the control room, cranked up a dance tune to the max, and then went around the house for a listen. It was after midnight, and the breeze of the trees was louder!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D
I was like a kid in a sweet shop!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6523_IMG.jpg
Next up is get Jeff back on Tues to run all the cables, install all six monitors properly (imagine how that sub will sound when it’s in the proper location!), fit the desks and then start wiring!
I’ve been busy designing wall panels that I can get cut for nothing on a laser cutter. The attached .skp is my live room panel template which I’ve posted for any of you to use as a start point if you’re at the same stage. The holes are for standard Neutrik D-Type cut outs, and the 16mm ones for midi sockets and cable glands. I’ve left the geometry in the file for accurate (centered) text placing above each of the holes. If any of you can make use of it help yourselves, but don’t forget to remove the geometry and get it exported as a .dwg file before you take it to your local engineering company!

More next week,
Regards as always my friends,
Lou. 8)sweet.
your nearly there now buddy glad it all worked out for you.
i wonder if you will still visit the site once your finished lol.
joey
"No treatment required", eh?
I hate you!!!
Haha! Just kidding buddy!
That is so awesome my friend, I am really happy for you. It is really great when it all comes together, and it sounds like it has for you.
Now, it is almost time to have to actually do some recording ya know! That is when "the proof will be in the pudding" as they say. Hopefully, you will be able to get your (old) brain around the Tascams, and things will go smoothly from here on out.
Best to ya Lou!
Hi guys – Here as promised, is the next instalment!
It probably won’t look as if much has happened, but, I can assure you all, I’ve been full on with this since my last update.
First up, get Jeff back, remove one of Archie’s removable panels, take apart some of the workstation, house that Air base 12, and start running some cables! Easy really!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6563_IMG.jpg
Man what a mess again.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6565_IMG.jpg
Finally my sub is in its final location. This also shows the steel bracing bars that Jeff used to support the back of the desks. These are of course no more involved than a pair of ‘U’ profile rack strips. Very handy, as you’ll see in a moment.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6578_IMG.jpg
Get Jeff back up in the void above the control room to run all cables for the surrounds.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/165-6569_IMG.jpg
Then it’s my turn to get helpful with the soldering iron and sort the 9 XLR connectors that will provide digital and analogue signals to the monitors. This was also a good time to adjust the length of all mains cables, and replace with right angled IEC’s to save space at the back of the soffits. Cat 5's also in final position.

The supporting rack strips under the desks make perfect harnessing points for all cabling, and NO, there isn’t any mains running with audio!

Now for the bit we’ve all been waiting for…………….Ok, all the gear so far is ‘mains’d-up’, but no inter-connecting wiring has been done yet as I’m still waiting for my panels. However I can belt a CD out to die for, and I should have all my computer gear and the rest of my existing kit installed by the end of the week. This means that I will effectively be able (at last) to work exactly as I have been doing, but this time in the new facility, with new desks and monitoring. :D :D :D :D :D
For the really eagle eyed, you’ll doubtless already know that I now have just two days left before the 18th July, which is exactly one year on from when this whole project started. Full wiring will be done before the end of August, as a Studio launch party is being planned just after that. U.K. builders get yourselves down here and take a gander!
Self-righteous/gratuitous/nerdy chuffed shots of Studio 4 control room as it stands at the moment!!!!!!!

That’s it for now chaps more soon. The wiring has already been lonely, two 25 pin D-types to the back of the desks didn’t help! The rest should be easier if not awkward to get to.
Warm regards as always,
Lou. 8)Lou, its simply stunning mate, i went through the whole 24 pages last weekend for inspiration as I tire of the drudgery of my own build
Aloha Lou,
Congrats on a fine looking job!
Aloha 8)
WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!!
Dude, that is just amazing! I have no words to describe how happy I am for you!
I love the picture of Sarah as Cruella Deville! I am trying not to drool!!! You however make a pretty ugly Clint Eastwood!!! (Just kidding... GREAT costume!)
A big congratulations on your build. Looks like an amazing result and a true inspiration!
/Gash
:ahh: Lou... That looks amazing... Wow cant wait to have my own... pretty soon... Great Build.. Best one if ever seen... same as a buddy before said.. ive gone thru the whole 25 pages.. over and over again.. Awesome build... and great costumes by the way... Keep up the good work.. and god bless you all..
Okaaayyyy, looks like it's back to Truck Driving for me.
What an inspiration! Great Job on the attention to detail.
Wow Lou!!
I've been quietly keeping up to date with this diary and well - I'm speechless! It looks (and appears to sound!) flawless! Can't wait to see it completely finished - bet you feel the same.
Also loving your shots of corfu - I'm heading there with some friends at the end of August myself, so hopefuly I'll have the same sunsets as you:D
Enjoy the rest of your build :D
Gareth
Hey Gringo, nice job ;)
Re-routing cables is a great job, no really. I love that sorta stuff. Some hate it, I love it. "okay, let's re-do the cables today...again." WHOT? "yes, ye heard me right. let's get cracking shall we" 8)
Hi guys – As always, many thanks for the kind words of encouragement, really appreciated.
Ok well here’s the next bit. A step by step guide on how to produce a set of ridiculously ‘over-specified’ wall panels! I mean the kind of panels that make you want to say “What on earth made you go for that many connections? Are you mad? You’ll never use that lot in a million years.”
Well at least that saves you guys the trouble!
Anyway – Here goes.
Firstly, make a detailed .skp of your panel and ensure that you’ve thought of everything you need and may need one day in the future.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/WallPanelTemplate.jpg
Then ask a very experienced dude up here if they will kindly convert the files to .dwg files so that your mate’s works laser cutter can read them.
You know who you are kind Sir, so thank you very much once again.
Next, have a mock-up made in really cheap galvanised steel, so that you can check all the holes are in the correct position, and of the right diameter. They are!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6642_IMG.jpg
Then gather together all connectors and do a final check of stock.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6639_IMG.jpg
Once happy, give your mate’s firm the go-ahead to produce all four panels.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6637_IMG.jpg
Marvel at the ‘nerdy’ beauty of 2.5mm brushed and lacquered mild steel, and then hit yourself around the head as you suddenly realise that 4 of the connector holes in the bottom panel (second row up) don’t have the diagonal fixing holes! Yes Lou – You must have deleted those from that .skp by accident and you’ll now have to drill those yourself!
Assemble the necessary tools, and in particular, make sure you have a 5.5mm ‘nut spinner’.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6638_IMG.jpg
Then set up an assembly line.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6640_IMG.jpg
Break yourself in gently by making up the smallest panel first. This one is for the front lobby, for those situations where a drummer and bass player want to hear a guide vocal whilst they’re laying down their parts.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6641_IMG.jpg
Then steam into it and make up the big live room panel.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6643_IMG.jpg
Complete the other two, and sigh in disbelief as you find out you’ve under-ordered by 4!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6656_IMG.jpg
Take front view photo for forum.
Top to bottom is live room, iso-booth, and chill-out area. Yes good people, there will be tie-lines to the conservatory as the acoustics in there are terrific. Ideal for a live sounding recording of a string quartet perhaps, maybe even with the doors open so that you could hear the birds and the trees in the background!

Return panels to live room for safe keeping.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6659_IMG.jpg
Take a couple of detail shots to close the post.
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6663_IMG.jpg
The logo and all the labelling have been etched by laser into the steel prior to brushing and lacquering. The speakons are for when a player wants his amp in the control room but his cab in the live room, and the GTR1 and 2 sockets are cable glands that will house decent guitar leads. These will be simply coiled up and placed on hooks either side of the walls. Basically a guitarist can plug into one end of a good quality guitar lead in the control room, and the other end will plug into his gear in either the live room or iso-booth.
Admit that you’ve gone way ‘over the top’ and hope that at least a few forum members agree that you’ve covered just about every eventuality, and …………………well, you know!
External image, not preserved — original: http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z194/m2uso/album%20name/166-6661_IMG.jpg
Next up is the woodwork and steel angle to house and mount said panels, and then I won’t be able to put off the main wiring any longer.
More soon dudes,
Regards as always,
Lou. 8)lou they look the nuts mate. :D
Lou you're crazy! :P
I LOVE the embedded logo - very professional touch!
I'm just going to use an off the shelf stagebox/multicore
With those guitar lines - how long will the cable be between the connections? I'm thinking of doing the same but am a little concerned about the distance degrading the signal too much.
Cheers
Fantastic work!
Gareth
Nice looking panels Lou! I love the way you etched your logo into them. Pretty amazing, as usual. I guess we are coming to expect nothing less than perfection from you amigo!
I did the same thing in that I went a bit overboard on my panels as well knowing that you can never have too much!
I have 32 mic jacks wired in various spots around the studio (live room, iso room, air lock), lots of guitar instrument cables running into every location, ethernet (headphones), 12 ga. speaker cable (a bitch to solder), MIDI, etc.
I also make my mic jacks using the Neutrik combo jacks on the live room side so I can plug in either mic XLR cables or TRS 1/4" plugs.
