Here's the assembly of one of the removable panels that will soon have fabric. I ripped 1x4's into 1" strips for the 1" 703, and a support on the back so it doesn't push out...
Okay, THIS I need to know!!! how do you connect these walls to make it sealed. i can't find the answer to this question on this thread. here is my similar situation:Here's the step between iso room and sound lock to CR... There's a piece of 703 sandwiched between the little gap. Then I just need a longer Threshold to cover it.

thanksThat is PERFECT!
thank you so much.
I wasn't too sure whether "insulation would be enough. However when they say "insulation", they say:
"cut sheets of fibreboard to the shapes and then glue thin fibreglass to it. Then you can wrap cloth around it for aesthetics and glue it into place. It is also a good idea to drill 25mm - 50mm (1" - 2") holes in the fibreboard in which you can put the silica beads"
I can't really picture this. would it be similar to simply put Neoprene over the gap and seal it?
And best thing about the info, unless I stand corrected, it's all by Sayers.
Hello Pantalaimon,
If you could, resize those pix. I'm having to scroll on a 19" screen. :(
Looks like Carl has got you covered on the question. I still haven't put my doors in yet, so I'm trying to figure some of these things out (windows & doors) without shorting. I'll probably be buying some 1" oak stock and custom cutting it for a saddle, etc for the threshold.
Gotta run, been slammed at work lately...
Hi Aaron
I think i'll take a leaf from your book and leave it till i have my floating studio done.
i must take this opportunity to personally thank you for those pics. i saved every single one and printed em off so that me and me dad could study them.
i'd just like to let you know that it was YOUR room pics that altered our whole construction and now we are a lot more happier with what we are building. we have possible upped the STC by 23 dB by using LESS materials.
going out tomorrow to get 30 sheets of 19mm planking.
thanks
Pantalaimon, glad your construction has been helped by this; now, if you could do US a favor by following as many of the highlighted points
http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231
as possible, particularly editing your profile to include a general location? Thanks.
As to replacing the fiberboard with neoprene, NO-NO - around a window, you need to let it BREATHE into/out of the wall cavity insulation - this helps damp the glass panes, and allows moisture to escape as well. The fiberboard mentioned is much more permeable than neoprene, which does NOT pass air OR moisture.
Also, I would minimise splaying the glasses to what you need for reflection control (sound reflections that is) - because the narrower you make either the bottom or top gap in a window, the more you reduce the isolation for sound. See the following -
http://www.audio-muziek.nl/audiotechniek/acoustics.pdf
Hope this helps... Steve
that's great steve.
don't worry i have decided that skewing the windows is a bad idea unless the windows are gonna be more than around 2' apart.
i was thinking that one of the regular members should put that little
"triple spring" Vs "single spring" diagram with the increase of 23 dB diagram in their sig. cos it absolutely amazed me. not only cos of the gain in STC but it actually made so much physical sense.
i think it's one of those counter-intuitive gems that all should know!
Hi Aaronw!
Why you cover the front with timber and then fiberglass panels over it?? It's 1" so enought deep for low absortion??
Hi Hugo,
The front wall has 2 layer's of 3/4" plywood on it for the bass trap. The 1 1/2" 703 on the front of it is to help absorb high frequencies and dampen the plywood some on the lows.
Hope this helps. :)
So the wall is made by th 1/2" 703 + 2 plies of 3/4" plywood and hangers behind it??
a question of sofit mount  :
is made by block filled with sand and then a mdf box over the block?? where is attached the box?? could you explain me the steps to build it??
Hi Hugo,
There were some reason's (after thought) as to why and the construction ended being built. If I had the chance to do over, There would be a couple things I would do differently.
Here is how things are constructed now:
The floating floor is under the entire control room (walls, soffits, treatment, etc.). I then built the walls on top of the floating floor. The top of the walls are supported by brackets I made to support the walls and to help decouple or isolate as much as possible any hard connections to the existing structure of the house. I then installed the ceiling above on RC. The entire front section (the bass traps & soffits) are completely self supporting; in that it is only connected to the floating floor. There is no contact at all w/ any of the framing to the side walls or ceiling.
At this point in the construction, I decided to set up a couple of stands w/ my monitors to see what was happening in the room. I found there was some structural resonance w/ the control room, so I asked Steve (Knightfly) for some suggestions. After telling him the details of the floor contruction, he felt I needed to add some weight to the control room. So this is partially the reason for the concrete block stands. ( I wish I could have had them go all the way down to the slab below instead of the floor).
The stands provide a few solutions for my scenario. It adds weight to the floor so it achieves the needed "spring" for isolation, it helps the monitors by being on a "solid" base (which by the way should add 3db from what I learned in college), and in theory should help w/ the bass trap (that's my guess).
Construction of the stands include:
8x8x16 concrete block (hollow in the middle). Mortered.
Filled w/ sand, then topped off w/ 4x8x16 solid concrete blocks.
Some of them I had to make a frame around and top them off w/ concrete mix to make them all the same height.
I cut a piece of 3/4" MDF (basically for a shelf) for the monitor to sit on. Since the block was sitting back too far, I needed it to come out for the monitor to be flush w/ the front wall.
On the MDF, I used a paddle bit (1") or so, and drilled out part of the MDF so the screws could be "countersunk" below the level of the speaker. I used concrete screws (Tapcon's) to attach the MDF to the block. But, first I added a small piece of 1/4" rubber where the screws would go through between the concrete and the MDF. This was mostly to help w/ some added isolation and reduce structural resonance. There are 4 mounting points on each piece (screws that hold the MDF down). I also used washers that already had neoprene attached to them (purchased that way) for the top side of the MDF. So basically you have the following order: Concrete screw, neoprene/steel washer, MDF, 1/4" rubber, and then the block.
Then I have straps attached to the sides of the block. I attached these by burning a hole in the end of it w/ a soldering iron, used fender washers and screwed it to the sides.
The construction of the front wall frame is:
2x4 framing except the front section the plywood attached to. It is 2x6 construction.
The entire framing is filled w/ Roxul Mineral Fiber. I made the hangers and hung them inside. Then put the 2 layers of 3/4" plywood. Cut out the ports (that I forgot to cut before hand  ) for ventilation. The monitors I'm using are powered and rear ported, so I didn't create a box for them. I need them to breathe as much as possible. I may create a plenum return (or similar) above the ceiling treatment and this will suck the hot air out of the soffits.
:D
Greetings all,
I hadn't posted in a month, so I thought I would give an update to the latest (sorry, no pix yet).
I have done nearly, absolutely, jack S**t.
I finished up the plywood on the rear monitor soffit's yesterday. Lookin' good and sounding...mmm...keeps changing, but much better. Some nice tight low end without the flubber.
Other than this, it's looking like I'm going to be at a stand still for awhile. I've had a few unplanned events take place over the last month and a half that will require lots of my time and of course, lots of money (that was suppose to finish out the control room).
So I've just come to a screeching halt from now until ??? At least 2 months, probably more. So much for my Sept. projection for the control room (and I was right on track too...DAMNIT!). Now I'm probably looking at next winter or spring (realistically).
Gotta love those BUMPS in the road! They'll knock you off track nearly everytime.
Anyway, enough blabbering. I hope everyone is doing well. :D
Aaron
I hope the "bumps" aren't too bad, Aaron. Is that code for "life crap"?
Wishing you well...
Yeah...Family crap. My parents lost their house in bankruptcy. I still have some old things of mine in the house and in storage, so I'm flying home, renting a truck, and driving back 3000 miles across country.
Very sorry to hear that. :-( I can't imagine what it's like going through that, you or your folks. :?
Hang in there, Aaron...
Thanks.
Will do.
Sorry to read the bad news hope all is well as can be expected.
Man, what a bummer - I hope your folks are holding up as well as possible under the circumstances; let me know if there's anything I might be able to do... Steve
Yeah. It is a bummer. Life occasionally throws the curve balls at ya. Oh well. I just hope they get back on their feet. And hopefully this doesn't break my bank in the process. I guess it's back to the Top Ramen diet for awhile... Argh...
I've gotten used to the ten cent dinner and two dollar beer.
Hey Steve,
I just noticed that 5 months ago you made an edit on the first page.
I guess that shows A: how busy I've been; B: I haven't looked at the first page in awhile. Although, I could've sworn I've seen it seen it since March. :?: :?: :o
Eventually I'll update the first post as a "Bookmark" for topics in the thread. I just haven't had the time.
