Great pix! Keep 'em comin'!
In the top pic, the piece of wood running between inner and outer frame is TEMPORARY, right??!?
defenetly that block is temparary its just there to keep
the other wall plum .In fact I wrote on it (temperary
block) but you can't see it in the pic.
Here's more jpegs the first pic is a dividing wall to
divide a live room from a dry room sound but the
wall so far is single and I'm not sure if I should
double this wall. I have not had any problems in
the past at other studios with sound leakage from
single wall divisions and booths . any coments to think about?
Man, I love seeing framing photos! :-)
Hey, ruben, you'll need to crop the that 972 pixel layout drawing. You can get that down to <700 just by trimming off all the useless white space.
Thanks for bringing that up.
I fixed layout pic down to 700 pixels.
I'm not sure if I should double this wall. I have not had any problems in

Depends on things like type of music, how loud, whether you'll be recording separate musicians in both rooms simultaneously, etc - if only one room will be used at a time, then I would definitely NOT worry about double walls.
OTOH, framing lumber isn't real expensive compared to time/labor, etc - if the extra floor space required isn't a problem, I think I'd go for double frames in case you wanna record a fretless 6-string bass live in one room and a flute in the other at the same time  Steve
Well, you make a good point .its worth the time
and money to double the wall just in case some
of those sessions come up.
Thanks
heres a pic of part of that wall and rafters
I agree with Sharward. I love to see pictures of framing too. It's kinda motivational. Looks good man.
At the bottom right of that pic, is that a door opening without a header? Steve
Yes Steve its a door way and its getting a header for sure .
Im glad you question these things just in case I miss somthing
important like that and thats why I think this forum is the best.
Numero Uno! :D
does anyone have any comments/info on cotton batts for wall insulation?
Why not fill the cavities with Thermafiber Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB) - Nominal Density (2.5 pcf) or Roxul Acoustical Fire Batt (AFB) - ≥2" (2.5 pcf)? This stuff will probably satisfy your local building department's requirements for a firebreak in the void between the walls without having to permanently couple them together with lumber.
That's what I plan to do on my project. 8)
Thanks do you have info on where to buy roxul south of Los Angeles Ca? and by the way here's info on cotton batts.http://www.bondedlogic.com/UltraTouchSubmittal.pdf
Acoustical Material Services has locations throughout Southern California. They deliver too! :)
Those cotton batt performance numbers look really good on the low end if I'm reading the specs right. Very interesting!
:?: Steve, are you seeing what I'm seeing?
yes the specs look good and its about 76 cents a sq ft for R-13 cotton batts
but I don't have the money or time to take such a risk and find out that
it does'nt do the job.
So far roxul is the way to go. 8)
got the header in for the doorway.
Hard to be sure from the pix, does the right side have at least two FULL length studs for the hinged side, or do you still need to add those? Also, you'll need cripples above the header lined up with the studs above. Also can't see for sure, did you sandwich 1/2" ply between the two 2x6's for the header so it's flush both sides? (This last isn't vital if only one side of the frame will be paneled)
Always good to see progress... Steve
...and always good to see level! 8)
I love my house and it was well built and all, but when I lose  an inch  from ceiling to floor, you know someone was half-asleep when they plumbed that wall.
Steve the right side of the door way is the same as the left with two full lenth studs and the inner studs sit under the header. the header is from
a 4x6x10 stud. Its hard to tell on that pic but here is a drawing of what I did.
I still need to add cripples above the header but here's another pic
Ha! Big bags o' Roxul AFB! Where'd you get 'em? Is your source already represented in the Building Products forum?
Still need a few more pieces added so you won't be sorry later - like this
Great stuff. I'll probably do the same "king stud" and "midway blocks" on my project. Rigid doorways, good stuff.
I got the doorway done this morning.
