that blue is great! and that is a huge beer can
and that is a huge beer can
Well, you know, here in Chile we don't do things in half measures! :) (That's just the small size can, you should see the BIG one! :) ) Seriously, Javier, the places looks GREAT! Good job! (How does it sound?) - Stuart -
Thanks Stu! I don't know yet! Very dry so far :| But there is one slot wall left to be finished, plus we'll put some hard surfaces on the ceiling as well, like a chess board Also, we need to install the windows because if I clap my hands, I hear the other room's reverb hehe The first thing i'll do when we finish this room is to post a sample clip with a room mike on a drumkit
More progress There's just one glass to install and we are ready to record drums Later I'll install the video camera and have to buy a large LCD screen to watch the drummer :D

That stone work is really good looking. Nice work.. Dig the blue as well.
The room sounds very good! I'll post clips soon! Very bright, controlled, short decay. It sounds "safe", However, I put a room mike in the hallway with the door opened and voila! Thats the drum sound i wanted! You know, i'm a "big room" lover. with lots of decay So. for more intimate recordings, the room is great. but for rock stuff. I think i might leave the door opened and put a mike somewhere else! The room wasnt big enough to make it more live. small rooms sound bad. so i think we did the right thing Probably when I win my first grammy i'll buy a big warehouse and build the big drum room i want. for now. its okay
Guys, Lets say I'm not convinced with the sound of this room (i just recorded drums for an album this weekend there) and I want to make it more "alive" Any ideas? obviosly, taking the cloth walls apart and puting "something" instead. Wood? Drywall? We measured with a certified acoustician the noise and it was practically zero, none, nada so I dont care for any 3rd leaf effect in some places if we decide to replace cloth for hard surfaces There isnt much absorption overall on this room so i was impressed that it came out more dead than i expected, i guess the only cloth wall is eating up all the reflections. Any words of wisdom?
Timber diffusers on the ceiling? Stolen picture

Actually half of the ceiling is timber tiles and fiberglass tiles!
No one else? Too busy mixing some records?

wow. javier! that looks awesome! great. what about your sounddilemma? have you changed anything? you weren't very pleased with the drumsound... cheers, carsten
Thanks! Yes. I still think it sounds too dry for the % of absorption it has (practically one wall, and half of ceiling) I might try placing some timber sheets over the cloth walls and see what happens. Also, Im guessing that the slot walls absorb a decent ammount of frecuencies as well. I guess a 100% slot wall room will not be very alive at all Another reason could be that since the room is not really big, a room mic will still be too close of the drumkit to create the "far room" sound. But that can be solved placing a room mic in the adjacent room when its finished Learning.. learning! Thats whats I get from this projects! My next studio will be just brickwalls!! lol

ahh. good to know. but strange. i thought with that much wood in relation to slots it must be way more alive. i should take it into account for my design. yeah, you're right. learning. learning.

:thu: ditto. carsten
Right Take into account that it depends on what sound you are looking for. For many clients, my room like that woud be perfect. There are people that like contained, safe drum rooms. Im more like a big hall drum sound lover
Javier, Thats looks awesome dude. Very nice Tom
Good and bad news! Good are that today I got one of the best drum sounds ive ever got! Just by placing that room mike outside the room, inside the unfinished vocal room (all exposed concrete walls) gave me the most amazing room sound ever!! Obviously, I ran the session with the door opened all the time Bad are that in a few weeks we are going to build that vocal booth, meaning, all the cool concrete'ish liveness is going to go away :|
Then don't do it :)
Hi jbassino, Congrats! It's a great looking studio, I've got a question. How did you distribute the isolation inside the slat resonators? Did you fill the whole thing or just put isolation on the walls leaving the slat wall with only the black cloth?
