Hey, I'm really looking forward to your speakerstand project. I'm currently designing a pair of stands using the same sort technique.
have a good build :)
ps. congrats on the 12mm glass!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

Yeah, I based them on the one that used toilet flanges to attach the pcv on the wood. In my case, I didnt find flanges on homedepot so I just bought pvc "ends" which I will screw into the wood and glue to the tube. Same idea tho
Just PVC, Sand, Wood squares, black paint , rubber door stops that i'll use for the base and some screws. About $45 for the pair
Great build.
Can't believe how quick it's come together.
I built those exact PVC stand about five years ago, an they are great!
I could never get mine to hold paint. PVC just seems to chip and flake.
On mine i use self adhesive rubber stair grip. That's meant to go on the front of steps.
Will you lay the ADAMS on their side? Or up right?
( god damn it . I wrote a long post and somehow. I lost everything between uploading pics !!! :horse: :| :cen: )
Anyway
Lil, You need to buy "plastic/pvc" spray paints. They hold up in the first hand!! You'll find several types of paints, like general use, metal, and plastics. Thats the one you need
I will lay the Adams up right :)
The stands work great so far!!!
The only thing that should be improved by you guys is the way to attach the pvc tube to the base. I used pvc ends, that I glued and screwed to the base, but since its a really short surface (and a lot of mass above!!!), it doesnt provide a tight joint , so if you really push the stand, it will move foward a little. Its okay tho but there should be a better way to do it like using toilet flanges or making a circular hole in the base and find a way to attach the tube on it. In my case, after you sit the speakers on them, they stay good and firm
Its weird, but when I listened to some mixes it did sound much better than my previous studios . Have in mind that Im not done with the treatment because I need a lot more bass trapping , but the low end sounded a lot clearer now. There was some things that I didnt notice before, and now was like having a sub in a good way, because it didnt sound like it had too much low end. It sounded balanced and right, like the low end that it should have. I know i need much more bass traping and indeed it has more low end that i think, but its a good starting point !!! Maybe it has to doo because Im close to a good room ratio.... you have to trust your ears sometimes
PD. cellphone pics
:)
hmm, I'd add a piece of steel through the pipe and use bolds to secure it. through and through. doesn't look very stable those stands, javier. or are they?
They're not 100% rigid, but they work
If you can come up with a sketch of what you mean I dont mind upgrading mine
My ears weren't so wrong at the end !!
My low end response is FLAT !!!
7 db difference at the worst deeps/peeks (7 total)
However, above like 1k im getting comb filtering  :? What may be the cause for this? Im guessing its the lack of absorption overall and the flutter echo thats causing the comb on these higher frecs, because the low end its really good (i'll post a pic tomorrow)
It's probably coming off the wall right behind the speakers, or maybe the desk: At that frequency, it can't be anything very far away. - Stuart -above like 1k im getting comb filtering. What may be the cause for this?
Probably.
I'll find out when I make a bunch more panels in a few week after i finish this album. I can definately work with this tho. Sounds much better than anything i've been before
I did a quick test just for the fun of it. I put one sealed package of insulation (20 sheets) laid down on the floor and did a measurement again. The RT60 on the low end improved dramatically !!
I will :)If you can come up with a sketch of what you mean I dont mind upgrading mine
Here's the low end graph.
Keep in mind thats with no bass traps!!
My RT60 is still longer than I need, but those 10db deeps, sounds better thant they look. By Ethan, 10db its pretty good (average)
Of course, That will even improve when I make my superchucks and all the good stuff
Hey Javier, if you want to borrow my Adam Sub-8 for a couple of days to test out your REAL low end, I don't mind lending it to you (as long as you take real good care of it!). I wont be using it most of this week, so if you need it just let me know. I could drop by with it tomorrow at some point. It might help you check much lower than you can go with just the A7's by themselves, and is specifically designed to work with them.
Let me know!

Sure Stuart, that sounds very good indeed!
I still have the measurement mike I borrowed for testing the room, so give me a call tomorrow? Thanks!!
OK! I'll call you in the morning. Do you have plenty of XLR cables, to patch things together, or do I need to take some? I'll take my little spectrum analyzer too, and see if we can do some basic "quick and dirty" measurements.

Stuart,
I think I dont want to give you back the Sub 8.. it sounds so good

Good to hear Javier.
Excited to hear some new recordings from you
Peace

A couple of pics
Me and my friend Rafael shielding the snake cable for possible noise due to being parallel with the electrical conduit. We did many tests tho and no hum at all. pretty quiet actually. So just in case :D
The aluminum foil was later connected to ground.
And a shot viewing the control room. My stretching skills there got pretty fucked up. That was hard to predict how long to cut the fabric and stretch it to match the lumber that supports the window. But what the heck. at least the isolation from the windows is amazing. I cant hear a single thing from the recording room with my Adams fully cranked. The only sound is leaked through the snake conduit. I have to seal that mofo
Update :D
I managed to seal the 2" pvc snake conduit SUCCESSFULLY !!!!
First, I put a bunch of insulation inside the conduit as long with the cables. Then, I cranked my monitoring and went to the other room, guess what: No leakage!! nada! The wool itself somehow blocked all the sound going through the conduit !! Later I went and sealed the pvc end with caulk "just in case" but I was amazed how the wool did the job by itself..
Also, I plugged my guitar into my 120watt head and my 4x12 cabinet. I set the amp to "back to the future" level, and guess what. no leakage or whatsoever in my control room! I just heard a very low lowend rumble, but it was reasonable! wonderfull :yahoo:
The only problem was the recording room's door. Since I just built one door, I left the old thin door on the outer leaf and it sucks! so I have to build another super door for the outer leaf as well! It was pretty noticeable the volume from outside the room, but once you opened the door, I almost flyied like Marty McFly he he
Good mate - so when are you going to add additional treatment to the control room as it still needs it ;)
As long as I pay my credit card bills and I get some money from a couple of upcoming works
"...To be continued" :P
I also need to build the hangers for the rec room. Been too busy finishing an album. Sounds great by the way!
hey man, thaz cool !
Don't u love it when a plan comes together :)
cool - onward and upward :)
I've had a good time today adding to this design :)
