Hello Nativluv.... Well, I can't tell you that it doesn't act like a third leaf. Don't really know. However, its a strange case since the speaker is really part of the leaf. The soffit should act more like part of the speaker than a third leaf. Now, for sound coming in from another room, perhaps it will lessen the TL. Problem is, in order for the soffit to act like an infinite baffle, the wall needs to be sealed all the way around. There are soffit designs that do not have sealed edges, but I would consider them a hybrid design and not a true soffit. The experts perhaps can chime in here, but for me, I'd rather have a true soffit and better low freq response from the speakers than a marginally better TL. -ashley :shot: Here's to Johnny Cannons for hitting so loud and pissing my property-lawyer neighbor off just before my zoning meeting..... :yahoo: :finger:I really like your soffit build Ashley, can you tell me how the wall doesn't create a triple leaf, since it seems as if you built the soffits against gb, and then went over them with gb?? I'm looking to do something similar.

Thanks for the info Ashley, I'll see if I can dig a little deeper into this subject, because I have seen plenty of people using gb on the outer layer of their soffit mounts.
Hi, I want to built studio of similar size by myself and I wonder how often and how many people works on the construction.
I have been at work on this for just over a year now and have had about 15-20 people in various trades working on it. Not all at once but depending on what stage we are in. You need at least two highly skilled guys and another two laborers to do the grunt work to keep things rolling on track I think.
Good luck!

oh shit!! NOW someone tells me!! I've had septic (2), concrete (6), masonry (2), framing (3), HVAC (4) and electrical (4) contractors... and I've been at it for just under 6 years... actually 2.5 in earnest... and I've done probably 80% of the rest of the work without any help at all. I did have 4 friends help with the OSB on the ceiling, and one friend help me with the insulation and the ceiling gypsum. I can tell you that Ashley's about dead on with the recommendation for labor/assistance. If I could get another hand for about 2 weeks, I could finish my studio, otherwise, I've got about 8-12 weeks worth of work left. It's the small simple things that having that extra hand will cut so much time. Just snapping a chalk line across the ceiling can take 10-15 minutes by yourself, when you have a second person, it takes less than a minute. If I extrapolate backwards a bit, just having one extra person consistently show up, even unskilled, I could have been done 12-16 months ago. Didn't mean to hijack... but having some help is all important!I have been at work on this for just over a year now and have had about 15-20 people in various trades working on it. All I can say is "wow"!
My wife and I just went through your entire thread with jaws dropped...I am getting ready to build out the garage in the house we just bought and I may be sold on dying the concrete....it is absolutely gorgeous!
What type of dye did you use? I am assuming this was much cheaper than wood?
Anyways, best of luck to you...this is an outstanding build with a fantastic attention to detail.

Right! Zoning sorted. Will be installing 1/2" laminate glass over stained glass windows on the north side of sanctuary to protect neighbors from hard rock drummers! :shot: More on that later as it progresses....
So where was I? Oh yeah, console build and finishing clouds.... aww hell, piccies do more than words so here they come!!!
-ashley
we had to get the second control room up and running quickly in order to get a whole bunch of equipment out of the sanctuary space where it was temporarily. First go at popping the lights in and see the results.
-ashley
All these pics are in backwards order..... dang it! I keep forgetting the forum loads them from last to first. OK.
More clouds going in.....
-ashley
OK, onto the console build..... this thing is turning into a Pew Transformer...... Go figure. Its turned out to be a great asset to have all of these pews. I couldn't sell them for what they were worth and I certainly couldn't afford all this solid oak woodwork we are getting by using the material. The console itself would be thousands in materials alone. Its the green thing to do and looks bitchin' if I do say so myself.
Righto, piccie-dom cometh.....
-ashley
So we popped it in place after painting the soffit wall. I'm not sure I can believe we are getting this close to go time.... 8)

More console build.....
Howdy, Bassman.
The build is amazing, I'm sure you must be exited! Great panels, love it.
Keep up the great work, it's all comming together now. aight! :yahoo:
Amazing thread, thank you very much!!!
Hey Bassman,
Do you need some more fabric for those side-traps?
Looks great, by the way.

Hey Wes!
Y'know, Roy has been very efficient with the fabric. We are going to have some extra which is good since there are a couple extra traps I've put in at the last moment. I had him concentrate on the ceiling panels so we could get all that crap off the floor. The good news is the last one went up yesterday in the live room. We almost had total catastrophe when the largest one fell out of our hands and smashed a bit on the wall and floor but luckily the damage was minimal and it went up anyhow.
Now on to the side and rear scrim panels to finish the look. Diffusors going up next......
I've already had a couple bands in here and have been quite happy with the sound and the isolation, frankly better than I expected overall. So, I need to get a few more pics and then another update......
-ashley
Congrats, Ashley! Looking great.
OK..... :shot: 8) :shot:  :shot:  :shot: :yahoo:
Slappin another update here for ya. Ceiling panel detail. Some floors are being uncovered. Hot chick in the studio. Various band setups that we've done. All good things in a studio!
-ashley
Couple more pics.... some actual building going on here...
wow, that IS beautiful insulation :)
Also love the light panels, looks really well.
Thanx for the update
Just wanted to say hey to a fellow bass player 8)
Love the studio and have found your book helpful.
BTW is that Nuendo your running?
Yup, Nuendo it is. I write manuals for them and use Nuendo for my main system. Working on the SyncStation right now....
Ashville, nice....... What's that pizza place? Mr. Mushroom? Wes Lachot helped on the control room design. He's down your way.
-ashley
Mellow Mushroom perhaps? I prefer Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company :P
I'm going to have to look in to Nuendo again. Up till now I have mostly used Sonar and PT. I really would like to avoid getting sucked in to the whole PT thing again and while I love Sonar it's not really a post app.
I'm about ready to order fabric and I was wondering where you ended up ordering yours from and what you paid.
For post, you simply can't beat Nuendo. 300-500 track feature film sessions, routing galore. what's not to love?
Fabric, all Guilford. Reason: Fire rating. I'm fully commercial and come under fire inspections. Gotta have it. Any fabric needs an FR certificate to pass inspection. You don't want to lose your insurance if there is a fire and someone gets hurt. Paid? I think I have $1500 or so in fabric.
-ashley
hahahaha
I love this stuff!
Nice studio!
Makes me want to build another studio. :yahoo:
