I have been trying to get a hold of some of the rubber trunk seals that Rod specifies in his book to help provide an airtight door seal. He recommends a GM Type "K" rubber gasket.
When I went to the local GM dealer and asked for this, the guy looked at me like I was crazy, and said he needed more details... Year, make, etc.
I told him that all I knew was Type "K". He said that he thought that Cadillac had a Type "K" body style, but that was not enough to go on.
Does anybody (Rod?) have any more specific information on this type of gasket, or an alternative?
Many thanks!

DH, why don't you just show him the pic in the book? It seems that would take away the question - he would go....... :Ah-HAA!!! and just get it........ RodDoes anybody (Rod?) have any more specific information on this type of gasket, or an alternative?
DH -
JC Whitney has it. I got mine already.
That was my next step, and in fact, I told him I would be back tomorrow with the book to do just that... However:why don't you just show him the pic in the book? It seems that would take away the question - he would go....... :Ah-HAA!!!

I went to JC Whitney, and found it in about 10 seconds! Thanks so much guys!!! It is on its way! Now, what type of glue are you using to attach it to the door stops? (I will check the stickies again, but I did look there once.) This is why this place is so GREAT!!! Thanks!!! :DJC Whitney has it. I got mine already.

DH,
look at the door details - you don't use glue to hold it in place -
Staples to temp set it work just fine - and then it's the wood stops that lock it into place.
Rod
Whoops! I see that now. Sorry for the dumb questions! However, this brings up a couple of other questions about this... (probably dumb as well...): 1) From the drawings in your book (pages 94 & 96), it looks like the stops are cut or notched to hold the rubber, is this true? 2) To replace the rubber, you need to remove the stops? Thanks!look at the door details - you don't use glue to hold it in place -
Yup - sure nuff would - but - seeing as this faces no weather - no sun - and has nothing rubbing it in its length - - I don't forsee you having to ever replace the rubber in your lifetime........ RodDH, Yes - but the drawing deliberately exaggerates the angle and depth so no one misses it - the rubber compresses a lot and easily - so make the kerf as shallow as possible - your best bet would be to make a few samples 6" in length until you found a perfect fit that allowed you to lock in the rubber. 2) To replace the rubber, you need to remove the stops?1) From the drawings in your book (pages 94 & 96), it looks like the stops are cut or notched to hold the rubber, is this true?
Ha! Especially at my age!!! Thanks for the info... (as usual!)I don't forsee you having to ever replace the rubber in your lifetime........

Lou, Sure is - I was at Power Station less than a couple of months back - and the rubber looks as good as new - and that was installed in 1994..... so 13 years and counting. Rod,
JC Whitney sent me the wrong rubber. They sent Type "J". It's the sideways 'V' shaped one. (I even called to follow up on the order to confirm they were sending type K...*sigh*...)
I have a contractor coming next weekend to install the door. Can I use this type "J"? I don't know if I'll get the type 'K' in time.
Also can't find the 5/4 stock lumber for the jambs- except for pressure treated 'decking' lumber. Only looked at Lowe's, though.
Thanks for your help.
Forget the home owners special - go to a real lumber yard to find good 5/4 stock material. As far as the rubber goes - I don't think you can ever get it to lay down flat against the jamb (at the door itsef) and still lock it in tight to the jamb. You have it - can you make it fit and stay so it looks some what like it does in the book details? RodRod, JC Whitney sent me the wrong rubber. They sent Type "J". It's the sideways 'V' shaped one. Thanks Rod,
Found the 5/4 pine at another Lowe's- I'm good there.
I decided to overnight the correct sponge rubber...
FYI-
JC Whitney's online catalog is incorrect: 'Style K' trunk rubber is incorrectly listed as Style 'L' online. I had ordered Style 'K' which actually came up as Style 'J'. What a mess...I had to order what's known as 'Style L'- which comes up with the correct picture and stock #.

In their printed catalog, the parts and stock #'s match, but not online...
The correct stock number is: MU738864. Product comes in 10 ft. lengths only.
Studio -
I am going to copy this over to RO and post it as a sticky - the mods here should do the same........ this trunk rubber question comes up a lot
Thanks,
Rod
So my idea of no door and installing a Star Trek transporter instead isn't going to make it?
After hearing these nightmare stories about getting correct weatherstripping, I decided to call JC Whitney directly for my order.
Man, oh man, they tried about 10 times to get me to add things to my order. "phone-in specials" that only I would qualify for, since I was a special customer, I qualified for a "free" 3 month subscription to my choice of numerous magazines, did I want to pay "only $5.99 more to get a one year's subscription to the JC Whitney catalog with numerous monthly specials sent directly to my mailbox" ... on and on and on...
Wow! What a pain in the butt! They are looking to add any little thing to the order, impulse buying, drag-through sales, and all that. Some of the worst I have ever seen.
Then when she asked me for my email address, I politely refused. Can you imagine the spam these guys probably send out???
Sheesh, I just wanted weatherstripping!
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM JC WHITNEY!
Reasons:
1. Their online catalog does not match their printed catalog. Even after speaking to a customer service rep that the correct type was ordered, they still sent the wrong type.
2. I had to place my order AGAIN, this time ordering the INCORRECT trunk rubber as pictured, but with the correct item # per their printed catalog. I requested and paid for Fed Ex '2 day' delivery to ensure I could receive it today since my contractor is coming tomorrow to install the door. They sent order confirmation via email, including USPS tracking #. Wait a minute...USPS tracking #? WTF!!! That's right ladies and gentlemen- they DID NOT SEND IT 2 DAY!!! They sent it via USPS standard delivery!!!!
3. I contacted customer service to remedy the situation and they could not. They gave me the standard: "I do apologize...(insert other BS robotic customer service phrases) but showed no genuine concern for righting a wrong or taking care of their customers. There is nothing worse than someone screwing you over, admitting it, but then showing no remorse!
They acted like they were doing me a favor by upgrading the shipping so it would arrive on Monday. I reminded them that the initial order was placed on Dec 21st, and they had screwed up twice now, as well as overcharged me, and that I had a paid contractor coming on Saturday. Again, no concern. Can't ship it out- "last shipment goes out at 3 PM". I suggested that they personally walk down to the warehouse, pull the item, pack it, and deliver it themselves to their local Fed Ex depot since that is WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE IF I HAD SCREWED SOMEONE OVER TWICE. Personally, I wouldn't think twice about doing that to take care of a customer and save face. But them? Nooooooooooooo. No integrity at all.
BOYCOTT JC Whitney!!! They're evil and have no integrity.
And here's reason # 4:

Oh- here's several more reasons.
