I suggest you wait till he's worked out your Dormer/stairs and see where you can go from there. cheers John
Hey - new avatar Oliver :):) I suggest you wait till your architect has worked out your Dormer/stairs and see where you can go from there. cheers John
Yeah, you're right. I just can't wait. I'm so excited. He's coming tommorow I'll let you all know what happened. :D Cheers Oliver
Cool - I bet the dormer is bigger than you think to get a 6' person up your stairs :):) cheers john
In that case I won't allow anyone taller than 4'10" in my studio! 8)
yeah - don't allow any US basketball players in :) sorry about the cricket :):) cheers john
Yeah, and to think we taught you the bloody game.
you did - we taught you how to make money from it :):)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. enough, already!! Back to my attic. My architect came (ooer, missus!) and the firtst plans should be with me ina couple of weeks. A few points to make. The stairs will now be going up the side elevation wall (this is over my existing staircase) The perlins will be going. There will be struts holding the roof timber together (in the abscence of the perlins) at a height of 8'. There will be a dwarf wall at a bout 1 metre all the way around. There will be two dormers. One over the staircase on the side elevation wall to allow for head height and one on the back elevation to increase the size of the room. My guess is (and we'll have to wait for the plans to really see this) is that my room will be about 14' x 12'. The struts in the ceiling will be angled to break up parralel surfaces. That resilient channel place you told me about on the other thread, John is in Petersfield, Hampshire - exactly where I am going for a few days holiday to visit my bro!! What a coincidence. I thought I might put Ethans bass traps all around the room. I would be building them and I would angle them to stop the parallel surfaces thing again. I know you said hangers and slot resinators but these bass traps look a lot easier to make and take up less room. I am I being totally naive? Have you had any first hand experioence with them. The figures show that they are pretty absorbent down to 50 odd hz. this is adequate, no? Well that all for now. a bit garbled but I'm off on me hols so see you later. Cheers Oliver
That sounds good Oliver - I was hoping you'd put in another dormer as it will really increase your floor space. Just remember that Ethan's bass traps are highly reflective so you'll need to control the high end as well. cheers john
but are they really effective enough in the bottom end without the need for tuned traps and hangers? The highs are relatively easy to control, aren't they. Just rigid fiber glass panels on the wall, no? Cheers Oliver
There will be a dwarf wall at a bout 1 metre all the way around.
well you could use the space behind these walls to get the depth for a good low end slot resonator or hanger structure. cheers john
I was gonna use this space for storage eg. CD's, cables, mics, pedals and so forth. I want to keep the wall space as clear as possible for absorption as my room is relatively small. What I really want to know is : Is my room going to be acceptable with Ethans low, mid and hi absorbers? Even though slot resonators and/or hangers would make it even better how much subjective improvemnt on the the sound would there be as space is a a premium in my room. Sorry to sound like a broken record but I need to get this issue sorted out before I go any further. Cheers Oliver
well obviously you have to start the wall from somewhere and your 4' point is about where to start. Ethans panels are only going to use 4 - 5" of that space whereas slots can use the total available depth plus add diffusion to the highs. Maybe a combination of both. cheers john
apparently my plans should arrive this week!! Thats three weeks I've been waiting :x They'd better be good
Cool Oliver - can you post them when they arrive and we'll all tear them apart :):) cheers JOhn
You betcha! But please be gentle with them. It's my first studio
Still haven't arrived yet :( whilst I'm waiting - resilient channel. I went to the web site of the co who make it. Is it really woth all that effort! I mean how much difference does it make from say two layers of plasterboard with customaudio's barrier mat between? It's just that there is so much to go wrong and I'm sure my fitters would short the whole system out by screwing into a stud. Whadya think? Am i benig lazy or realistic? Cheers Oliver
:D Here are my plans

That looks cool Oliver - you've gained lottsa floor space. :) cheers john
Yeah, I know. The only thing I'm worried about is finding symetry in the room. Also, what would you reccomend for absorption and diffusion? CHeers Oliver
Where are you going to setup your work station? [/list]
Hmmmm.. no idea yet :? . Any suggestions? I would like to set up full size keyboard and sing at so good acoustics and some isolation there. Perhaps by the window in the dormer? The average head height is about 8' The alcove to the left of the door I was thinking about putting panel traps on the wall and then a two seater sofa infront./ There will be an escape roof window (velux) in the roof opposite the dormer window. Can't think of ought else.. My heads gone numb
maybe something like this? cheers john
