This whole area used to be at the bottom of the ocean. I see fossils around all the time in the limestone. Back on another note...I hope to start hanging some of this drywall tomorrow night and through the weekend. I'll take pix and post them as I move along... :D(yet did have glaciers sitting on top at the same time as 'us')...

Alright! I have 1st layer of drywall up in the first tracking room. Starting to look like a room! BTW...that's my friend Sid who does framing & drywall for a living...

Ceiling drywall 1st ? So that edge of ceiling drywall rests on the top of walls drywall... maybe I missed a reason why you're doing walls 1st. Suppose it ain't a big deal.

Marc,
In typical normal contruction I would. There are several reasons why I have not done this.
First and foremost, I haven't done the HVAC duct work yet. In order for me to do this, I need the walls up first.
Second, as Steve mentioned in that thread, to reduce the chance of shorting due to sag over any time.
Third, I still need access to the ceiling for running some additional cables/wires that I haven't pulled yet.
And finally...I haven't finished insulating the ceiling joists yet.
Update: The first layer has been caulked in the corners & around any electrical components, and the joints taped and mudded. Used backer rod (polyfoam caulk saver) in the corners. I'm gearing up to start the second layer. As with the control room, I've opted to not use the Green Glue. It's an expense I'm not willing to justify at this time. So, I'll stick to the 2 layers drywall, plus the additional layer of ply, and whatever finish treatment I decide (T&G?).
Attached are a couple pix with the first layer done...

Hey Aaron,
For the Sway Braces that you fabricated - what rating of neoprene did you use and where did you find it?
I have found a building supplies place here that has 60 durometer self-adhesive rolls - 1/4" thick by 2" wide - 25 ft roll for $17.50 but I'm worried that is too tough for anti sway braces.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Andy
Believe it or not, I just used some rubber roof pad we had here in the office that we use for non-penetrating roof mounts for satellite dishes. It's 1/4" thick and pourous, farely soft compared to the 1/2" 60 duro I used for the floor.
I'll be hanging the rest of the second layer of drywall in the first tracking room this evening. I'll post pix later tonight or tomorrow with the update.
:D
Look, ma! A studio! 8)
Yup!
I even told my mom last week I'd like her to come down for the "Grand Opening" party...Hopefully next year.
I'm going to have one hell of a party when this studio is finished!
All are welcome to attend.
:D
Second layer is complete in the first tracking room (except above the large window where I need to run some duct work).
Here's the pix from this evenings work...and makin' a mess...

Greetings all...
Well, if I can get up the energy to do so, I'll mud, tape and seal all the seams on the second layer this weekend. I'm feeling kind of lazy today after running 100 miles an hour everyday for the last month or so (actually about 3 months). I need some kick back time, regroup, and observe what needs to happen next, figure out some budgets and see what I can do next.
I'm just about at the point of where I'm going to have to get a storage facility or something. I'm just tripping over too much stuff right now and have to keep moving stuff over and over again just to work in the studio.
I'm just about at the point of where I'm going to have to do HVAC duct work. So in speaking of ducts, I'm going to revive the questions and maybe things have changed since my last research on this info, and Rod's great advice on what to use.
Per Rod's advice, I should use JM Superduct. I finally found a company here locally that can order it. Here's the catch, it's $60 a board.
Is there really any reason why, the flexible stuff isn't a good choice? I've seen it in just about every studio around town at some point.
I'd prefer to use duct board for better air flow, but it's going to be a PITA, in some area's.
What are the best things to use to support the board or ducting and still have some isolation from the structure?
That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure I'll have questions again shortly.
Thanks,
Aaron
Update:
I finally got around to mudding, taping and sealing the second layer yesterday (Saturday). I went and picked up some 8" flexduct to use for the HVAC returns.
If the opinion is NO, stop me now before I open the boxes sometime in the next couple weeks! I'm taking the week off during Thanksgiving, so if I'm in town, I plan to work on the studio all that week.
Uncle Sam just deposited money into my account, so I'll be buying a few more materials for the studio. I'm picking up the plywood for the walls Monday evening. OK you ask, what's the plywood for? It's so I have something to attach the final acoustics to, the T&G boards I intend to attach to the walls, and also for attaching display frames to.
Needless to say, after it's all said and done, it's about 4 layers total of something on the walls. 2 layers drywall, 1 layer plywood and 1 layer boards.
I'll probably pick up more insulation as well for the ceiling joists, so I can get them ready for RC, then it's time to drywall the other tracking room and plywood. Next will be the duct work after the walls are complete. Then I can finally do the ceiling. Yippie!
Just trucking along. Maybe by the end of the year, I'll be working on the floors. Then it'll be time to trim out for the doors, and windows and order some glass sometime around the first couple months of the year.

Hey, man, you're kicking some butt -- and making me look bad! ;-)
Don't miss this post from infiniteposse from a few weeks ago, where he regurgitates some quotes from Rod "The Man" Gervais on another forum regarding the use of flex ducts... Or, in other words, the recommended non-use of flex ducts in studio construction, especially over drywall...
I will be using them, I think, only to bridge the gap between my inner and outer leaves, as I think they're resilient enough for that 8" to 12" run.

Here's the info I got from Rod a couple years ago...

The previous link on page 15 appears to be dead now, so I did a search.
Greetings all...
I've been busy. I took this week off from work, so I've been hammering away at the studio. I'll post pix when I have time to slow down, but here's what I've accomplished so far...
I picked up 20 sheets of 5/8" plywood friday night, picked up 2 sheets of 12 foot 5/8" drywall to finish the second layer on the wall in the tech room, and picked up 10 bags of insulation (Thermafiber) on Monday.
I have finished half of the tracking room with the plywood, put up the 2 sheets of 12' board, finished insulating the other wall in the tech room and got the first layer, and part of second layer done. A little more conduit run.
I've got an HVAC guy coming over this evening to plan the sizing for the duct work. This ought to be interesting.
I'm hoping to finish up what I can with the plywood in the first tracking room, then move over to insulating the rest of the ceiling joists in the other tracking room as well as the walls.
I'm starting to consider using RC2 for the ceiling in the tracking rooms due to weight. Any opinions on this?
Thanks and have a Happy Turkey Day everyone.
Aaron
:D
Still been busy! Yeah, I know...I'll get the pictures up soon enough...
I installed 8 more bags of insulation yesterday. And I'm still itching today...If there's one thing out of this entire construction I hate...it's insulation!
Three of the four walls are ready for drywall in the 2nd tracking room. I may have the other one ready sometime today. It's the wall next to the shower in the bathroom, so I need to install a vapor barrier inside the wall then insulate it.
The kid that came out the other day and looked at the studio for HVAC, says I've planned well for ducting runs. I shouldn't have any problems.
I think I enjoyed more the Holy Shit reaction he had when he saw the studio though. Everyone has stopped by this week to see the progress with a similar reaction.
I'll post them pictures soon...
Aaron
OK, I'm whooped! A solid week of nothing but construction on the studio.
Update... I AM 100% DONE WITH FRAMING!!!!! Yippie!!! :D :D :D :D :D
Started the first layer of drywall in tracking room 2.
I wish I had another week off. I'd have the walls, electrical, maybe HVAC, and ceilings done probably. I am just moving right along with this.
I need to redo the plumbing to the upstairs washer/dryer, and for the sink in the kitchen/entry/tracking area. Install 2 more electrical outlets and 1 light in the soundlock between entry and tracking rooms. And then it will be ready for sheetrock.
I'll try and post pictures tonight if I don't get too caught up in it all.
Aaron

Keep up the good work!!
