your ears need to be in an equilateral triangle with the monitors. in most instances this would mean you are a significant distance away from the back wall (when soffit mounting). your desk will then be VERY long and a waste of space.
building your desk out from the wall may give you problems with reflections between the desk and ceiling. you may want to post a sketch of your plan to see what others think. . . room layout, and soffit/desk.
glad my pics are getting you excited!!!
they get me excited to finish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the Stiz build diary - FINISHED!

Ok......then I won't. No scetches now. I'll post pics of my progress soon. Thank you very much.building your desk out from the wall may give you problems with reflections between the desk and ceiling.
painted my ceiling!!!
it looks like i did a terrible job cutting in. . .but i'm putting thin tongue and groove wood on the walls, and some sort of crown or quarter-round where it meets the ceiling. thats why i did a fast sloppy cut-in with the paint.
also started to hang fabric over slot resonators.
slats for RFZ resonators stained and poly'd. ran a little tight on space, but they look great!
Currently there is MDF on the face surrounding the soffits.
I am wondering is it ok to cover that with a wood venere?
veneer is totally fine.
i'm finishing it with a thin T&G style paneling
T&G means tounge and groove?veneer is totally fine. i'm finishing it with a thin T&G style paneling
Yep
slats are up! they look great! hopefully they help the room sound as good as they look.
also did some of the paneling. i'm also very happy with how this came out!
some more slats, pulled wires from the ceiling/walls, wired up some outlets.
more cedar on the right soffit. i forgot to take a finished pic, but you'll see in the cloud pics next post.
i skipped a few steps in the pics, but you get the idea. also, there is a chain in some pics. i ended up replacing the chain for simple S hooks. . . the chain made the cloud hang too low, it BARELY cleared the top of the vocal booth door. it felt too low when i stood up as well.
I think I am as excited as you must be!!
Looking good!
I see that your slat absorbers are angled. Are the walls behing them also splayed(angled)?
Are you going to put trim at the top of the sofit walls where they meet the ceiing?
Is that roxoul in your cloud?
Is the heat from your lighs in the cloud an issue next to the roxoul, (or whatever that is)?
eruss,
no the walls behind the slats are not angled. these are low-mid range slot resonators. the room was built a rectangle and the resonators are on an angle to vary the depth, in turn, varying the frequencies absorbed.
yes, i am going to put trim where the soffits meet the ceiling. also on the walls around the slats. the only spots not getting trim/base are the slats themselves.
it is 3" Roxul in my cloud. i wanted to go more, but i got scared of the weight, i think if i have any left when i'm done i'll throw a 2x4 sheet or two up in there.
i'm a little nervous about the lights, yes. . .the bulbs are Xenon, which is fairly new for these types of lights. . .and they are WAY cooler than halogen, but i felt them after being on for a few hours, and it still was very HOT. i'm not worried about it with the Roxul though, i AM worried about it against my cloth. i put flame retardant on the cloth, but it still makes me nervous. i may put a strip of that foil heat tape stuff in between the cloth and the lights. we'll see.
THANKS FOR LOOKING THOUGH! i am getting very excited. i feel like i'm all alone, i barely am getting any comments on my build. i wonder if i'm wasting my time posting all these pics.
more pics soon. my other cloud is done, and the floor should be finished this afternoon!
Hey Mike,
No...man you're not alone on here. Hey, afterall, you've got over 2900 views so there ARE people watching. You pretty much had those pics FLYIN' in one right after the other so you've moved along pretty fast! :)
Keep that DREAM flowin'...Build it SAFE and keep the pics coming!
Congrats on the Studio build! :)
thanks for the encouragement camistan!
sometimes it feels like its taking forever, sometimes it feels like i'm hammerin along.
i'm working 98% solo, so it feels nice to say 'i built this'
my uncle helped me hang the HEAVY 5/8" 4x12 gypsum on the ceiling, even with the lift we rented it was nice to have some help.
my first studio a few years ago got a small 'rep' locally, and now that people heard my new spot is almost done, i got somewhat of a buzz going. i'm in somewhat of a small town in NJ, so i'm itchin to make some MUSIC!!!
Me too. I had help for one day on the framing and that is it. I'd be done by now if i had help. I even did the gypsum on the ceiling by my self just yesterday. Thank God for panel lifts! Your pics are the most important to me because your build is the most similar to mine. I even have them on my desk top for reference. So no, you are not alone. oh yeah, I was wondering.....
Why use hermoltz style resinators as opposed to the kind that you have next to your sofit panel faces? Aren't they broad band as well?
eruss, maybe i'm misunderstanding the question.
the the absorbers to make my RFZ (reflection free zone) ARE Helmholtz-slat resonators, and they ARE next to my soffits.
which are you referring too?
if you're looking at my pics and wondering how i did something, just ask, i don't mind explaining. i spent a TON of hours here researching stuff that i had a hard time answering. it may not be the BEST answer, but it should will be a decent one!
I could not tell the ones next to your sofits are hermoltz. so then they are sealed with caulk in the back next to the wall behind them? so you have hermoltz broadband absorbers starting next to your sofits then you have a space and then two more? Does the angle of the ones away from the sofits reflect past your head? from the pic it almost looks like they would reflect into the side of your ear.eruss, maybe i'm misunderstanding the question. the the absorbers to make my RFZ (reflection free zone) ARE Helmholtz-slat resonators, and they ARE next to my soffits. which are you referring too? if you're looking at my pics and wondering how i did something, just ask, i don't mind explaining. i spent a TON of hours here researching stuff that i had a hard time answering. it may not be the BEST answer, but it should will be a decent one!
yep, sealed. yep, a space, then more.
the angle does look weird in the pic. but it reflects past my ears.
my first post has the sketchup design, and a ray trace shows this.
eruss, when do we see pics of your progress!?!?!
it would probably benefit your build. . .
Why the space?Just curious. And is that the best way to get broad band absoption? How broad is the absorption? Do you know? Have you hooked up your speakers and listened to anything yet? So the frame that houses the absorbrs is 4" thick so that you use lke 4" of OC 703 then taper it down to 1"?yep, sealed. yep, a space, then more. the angle does look weird in the pic. but it reflects past my ears. my first post has the sketchup design, and a ray trace shows this.
the floor and lights/clouds are actually finished now, but i only have pictures of the halfway mark. i'll take some more soon, it looks nasty!
eruss,
1. the space was really just a money saver. that slats cost a TON of money. high grade pine is what i used, it was about $3-5 a piece. it added up quick. i'm hoping the 2 feet of parallel wall doesn't hurt me too much. if it does, i'll just put up some 703 i guess.
2. i believe this is the best way to get broadband (low-mid) absortion but keep the highs alive in an 'orderly' fashion.
3. i did ALL the math to figure out the slat size, depth, gaps, etc. to get the widest range. i alternated 3 different size slats (2", 3", 4") with 4 different size gaps (1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2"). i felt this gave the best assortment of sizing/spacing. it absorbs as low as 122hz and as high as 569hz, assuming my math was right, and my construction was right.
4. i haven't listend yet, i probably should, but most of my gear is hooked up in the studio's old location still, so i'm just waiting till everything is CLEAN enough to bring in the monitors.
5. if i remember correctly, the 6' slot resonators are 4" 703 all the way. from the soffits it's 12" off the wall, and comes down to 4 inches. the 'sawtooth' resonators are 3' lenght and go from 8" depth to 2". they have only 2" of 703. all of them are totally sealed in the back/sides and have air-space behind the 703. cloth is over the insulation, and the slats are touching the cloth/insulation. i researched these a TON before i started building, so i hope i did it the best my room could have.
I hope you don't mind me asking more questions. Your build is my insiration cause it is so much like mine. So the slot resinators have a space between the back of the resinator and the wall? and the wall is gypsum board and is parralel to the other wall on the other side? And they are NOT sealed? And just to clarify, the sawtooth resinators go from 8" closest to the sofits to 2" away from the sofits? Is this right? Because in the pics it looks the other way around. You are really helping me out. I greatly appreciate it.5. if i remember correctly, the 6' slot resonators are 4" 703 all the way. from the soffits it's 12" off the wall, and comes down to 4 inches. the 'sawtooth' resonators are 3' lenght and go from 8" depth to 2". they have only 2" of 703. all of them are totally sealed in the back/sides and have air-space behind the 703. cloth is over the insulation, and the slats are touching the cloth/insulation. i researched these a TON before i started building, so i hope i did it the best my room could have.
