we gotta trust his ears! (oh yeah, he's a heavy metal drummer)

I did listen to it during the day So yes some ambient outside noise going on
Tonight I will try when it all gets quite. But Yes, I did "not" hear a thump or anything. Zero noise outside due to my transmission system :)
Ok I was so excited I didn't even know what I was saying there DeE Dee DEe
I actually got pretty emotional. After all this hard work caulking and all the other little things that had to be done.
In the beginning I honestly didn't believe it was possible.
Thanks to this site, John and Rods book, following all those pain in the ars instructions I could not be happier or more excited.
Johnz,
But now I listen to classical  Got old somehow
Tom
Ok here are some readings from my Radio shack meter Not the best I know but bought it for this test. I think it only reads down to 55 or says low
Outside ambient noise was 55/low dec. without drums
Drums in room 112 dec.
iso 2 - 60/low dec.
iso 1- 55/low
CR 55/low
outside remained the same at 55/low
At the back corner outside where the drums are you could here a faint drum noise. Walk 10-15 ft. away and nothing.
Tom
Great story, especially the zero TL as Keith pointed out, haha.
(nevermind, we know what you mean.. it's more like 100% TL.. hell yeah)
Congrats man, hope your low end will do some serious TL too. Tried the BASS guitar yet? How 'bout that killer drum KICK?
Waiting them final pix!
Ro,
Thanks for the  too.
Have not tried a bass guitar. I have been pretty succesful in the past of running the bass direct. But the kick drum was used in the testing.
Only once did a guy have to bring his 10' 18" stage cabinet and monster set up because his sound was the only sound and he guaranteed me I would never hear a sound like his again. :)
I am holding off on the pics because I am right there with being finished.
Have 4 boxes of wires and stuff to put away, touch up paint around dooors, fabric between the doors and wire up the DAW. And the garage at the house is finally empty. Not clean but empty
Knock some more out tonight.
Tom
That's OK! We want pics anyway! The finishing details are what often take a lot of time! (Demanding, aren't I? :P) --Keith :mrgreen:I am holding off on the pics because I am right there with being finished.
Dammit Jim I'm only a doctor  I hate finish work If things go well tonight I will have pics. I finished the doors last night, the rest of the molding and now just need to touch up some paint and wire in the DAW. I am going to try and get another seal coat on the floor too. TomThe finishing details are what often take a lot of time!
Well things went according to plan sort of
Power amp for front monitors is down. Not sure why
Had the second PC up and now its not responding to the monitor except in safe mode. Not sure why.
So I need to get another power amp and dive into the PC some.
I couldn't help it and took some pictures. The place is still a mess and the boxes are still full. Had to tear through them to find patch cords and such.
Will try again tomorrow
Tom
and some more
Still need to get some rack gear in and wired
And clean up
Thanks for the pics, Tom! Looking great! Cluttered, but great! Hey, it's real, and that's what we want to see!
It must be very satisfying being able to see the end of the build getting so close!
I'm genuinely excited for you.
You should be proud. You've got plenty of reasons to be.
--Keith
Tom,
It's looking great. I'm jealous.
Is the neon light making any noise yet?
Marc
Tom,
Looks great... i really like the LCD mounts for the wall... I've been thinking of getting some form of mount for a desk (that I;ve yet to build)...
nice work!
kevin
Hey guys thanks. I will need a long rest after this is all over. I am sore and tired.
I meant to tell you I listened through the rear speakers last night as I was setting up (since I had no amp for the front ones  ) and the sound just from the rear speakers was great. The stereo imaging blew me away.
I had a hell of a time heaing it in my old studio. I had to move my head in just the perfect position to barely notice it.
I listened to a few old mixes and noticed some odd tones that I dont remeber hearing. So I put in a few of my fav. CDs (pro mixes) and the sound was in everyway solid. So excited to get the Mains up to listen.
Keith, And I didn't even take a picure of the break room. its full of saws and a air compressorCluttered, but great!
Marc, So far so good. I turned the guitar and the light on to check if there was any interference and none to be heard. My door guy made the same comment you did so I was wondering if it was only guitars that were effected. I also wonder as the ballast gets old if I will have problems down the road. I need to keep that in the back of my mind when I start getting some noises bleeding throughIs the neon light making any noise yet?
Kevin, found those at the other depot. Office Depot. If you dont have one they are online also. Not cheap but look nice, easy to install and sturdy Talk at you soon Tomi really like the LCD mounts for the wall...
Tom, the floors look awesome!!! That's exactly what I plan to do in my room (except I think I'd like something a little more colorful and less earthoney)! 8) 8) 8) Excellent job! Any chance of our getting more pictures showing off that beautiful floor?! --Keith :mrgreen:I am doing a stained floor just for the cost savings alone. I do them all the time at my real job ....fairly simple as long as you clean well before sealing the stain. There is a residue left behind from the acid and lime reaction that you get when you stain. Hard to see and its called floro silicate. A white fine powder that acts as a bond breaker if you dont get it all cleaned off. Just nuetralize with soap, vinegar, or TSP

Yeah sure Ill jump on that right away. its underneath all those boxes  I'll see what I can do this eve. I just returned from Guitar Center with many a patch cord and a new amp. So I will be busy getting some sound workin. Not sure what to do with the PC. I only use it for printing and WEB stuff. Doesn't make sense. Had it up and running then hooked a KVM switch to just the mouse and keyboard. It worked fine for awhile then the mouse went stealth on the PC in question only. So I re-booted and now it only boots to the first windows loading screen and then the monitor says no video feed. It will boot in safe mode. Any takers? TomAny chance of our getting more pictures showing off that beautiful floor?!
Ok Keith here are your floors and the rest of it.
I had my first session 2 weeks ago and things went great. Had to move a few wires around to make it all happen and get used to the controls all over but its just like riding a bike.
A final thanks to John Sayers and this wonderful resource he has made available for all to learn and enjoy.
And hopes that all who come here for years to come get as much enjoyment and knowledge as I have.
Many thanks for all the kind words and encouragement from all that have joined in on the build.
I hope Steve returns one day to pick up where he left off.
As JS would say
Cheers
Tom
and some more
and just for Keith
Stunning.
Just amazing that this was all done from scratch.
I can imagine sitting at the desk, having a look around, inspecting your kingdom, and thinking,
"Yup, I AM the man!"
Oz
The man indeed. Amazing work Tom. That's a mighty fine studio you've got there.
I bet your wife's pretty happy with the drum's being locked in there too:)
I'd love to check out your space sometime. How far out of Portland are you? I'm in the Inner SE.
Thanks for such a great thread. Wonderful stuff.
Tom...
Fantastic job on the studio! Got some questions for ya...
1.) Where did you get the neon "logo" sign? Locally? Online?
2.) Is it called a specific name other than a "neon sign"?
3.) Did you design it?
4.) How much did it cost?
5.) Approximate time for the sign to be made
Thanx!
Gorgeous!! 8)
I can't wait to see it in person myself... Next time I'm heading up to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, you'll be on the itinerary with a star next to it.
Thanks for the floor shots! 8) 8) Guys, is that cool or what?!
I especially like the countertops, too! Are those custom?
--Keith
Ozzy.... thanks.... It is kind of surreal sitting there finally after all the dreaming I have had over the last 8 months.
One nightmare that I walked out in the morn and the door was wide open. I just knew everything had been stolen. Then I woke up :o
Lee...Thanks but I have to say your finish work is awesome. I am not very patient with that type of work. I wish I could have spent the money on a finish carpenter
I am out in Gresham 182nd and Division. My office if 29th and division so probably fairly close to you. I just did a MS add and will send an invite for the grand opening. Its the 26th of May
Camistan.... The wife had it made at a local neon sign making shop.
My wife, my friends input on the guitar and the light maker made the design. Dont know how long it took to make and she wouldn't tell me exactlly how much it cost but I think around $500
Keith...Cold beer in the fridge 8) come on down
The counter tops are concrete. Another item my company provides. My entire house has concrete counter tops and I love them. Some maintenance but worth the time it takes to keep them looking nice
One thing I forgot to mention. Steve aka Knightfly had mentioned a dehumidifier early on in my build. I did purchase one 2 weeks ago because I was noticing some dampness. My build was during the winter and spring months and the timbers got pretty soaked....plus the self leveler on the floor plus the stain plus the paint plus the sheet rock mud and then sealing it all up tight. add some heat and wow it got humid.
So long story short I have been running the dehumidifier for 2 weeks and taken out about 20 gallons of water. And is still running.
Its still a rainy time of the year here so outside fresh air is damp in itself.
Just a warning to all about how tight your build can be and drying it all out is very important.
20 gallons of water? Holy crap!
Imagine having twenty one gallon bottles of water and spraying them all over in that place!

Hello,
Hey that looks great. I'd like stop by and check it out. The whole setup looks to have a "vibe" if you know what I mean.
