EDIT: Today HGTV e-mailed me to let me know they have pulled the episode.
HGTV has done the right thing!

Way to go Brian!
I sure wish I got to see that episode. I'm REALLY surprised that they even showed that with all the code violations and all. It's just like hiring an "expert" contractor and he says "the best way to soundproof is to put egg cartons on your walls or use more insulation in your walls"...He just has no clue what he's talking about (especially for studio purposes). The guy that "soundproofed" his garage...Man-O-Man do I feel for him...too bad he got the wrong info.
Good deal by you bringing it to the forefront...
Sonic,
do you have any idea what kind of carpet he used on the walls? (remember - berber carpet has been tested and approved for that installation).
Rod
Indeed, they should be ashamed of themselves!
Here's a synopsis of the episode.
It wasn't berber, it was definitely plush.
Thanks for backing me up here guys. I'm kind of going out on a limb taking on a huge network like this. :)
Perhaps HGTV should be reminded of the Great White show and subsequent fire at The Station in Warwick, RI: the flammability of improper "acoustic treatment" can hardly be ignored. You have done the right thing by bringing attention to this episode. The liability alone will likely get this pulled from the air; but one would hope the people at HGTV will put a warning on the episode guide.
Karma points on that catch!
Kyle
Jeeze, no wonder we have to work so hard to convince people on things like "foam ain't sound proofing", "no, 6 walls per side with "sound board" under plywood under carpet isn't better", "moving blankets don't "soundproof", they just screw up what sound is there by muffling the highs", etc...

So far, a thread has been started on the HGTV forum about this, which might get their attention, but then again, it might not.
In the interest of public safety, I think we should take this to the next level... Not to embarrass HGTV for what I assume (and hope) was a mistake under good intentions.
I thought of two things... One would be for members of this forum to send feedback directly to HGTV's Viewer Services Department. If you decide to contact them, be sure to choose "Weekend Warriors" under "Select A Show."
However, I have a slight problem encouraging people to do this who haven't actually seen the show...
Nevertheless, perhaps under the circumstances we should do it anyway, because in order for us to see it, they'd have to air it again, which is what we would like to have not happen.
Perhaps another approach would be for someone like Rod to send the parent company a compelling letter that covers the concerns. I believe many of us are qualified to do this, but I think Rod's especially qualified now that he can add "Acoustics Expert, Construction Engineer, and Author, Home Recording Studio: Build it Like the Pros to his closing...
However it is pursued, it should be respectful yet firm, such that the goal of having it not aired again out of concern for the public's safety is met.
There may even be an opportunity for one of the forum members being featured on HGTV with their project! Wouldn't that be cool? 8)

I think you've got a good idea going. I'm kicking myself for not hitting recording on my DVD recorder as soon as I saw the beginning of the show where they talked about what he was going to be doing. I could have uploaded parts of the show for you guys to watch.
Over at the homerecording forums someone else responded saying he saw the same thing. Maybe we could get everyone's accounts of the show together to give everyone a clearer picture of what exactly happened.
E-mailing HGTV is a good idea too, and someone like Rod would be a good choice for this.
I would be happy to send a letter off - but first I would really need some specifics on what exactly too place and how - when would even be nice. Sincerely, RodI think you've got a good idea going. Cool. 8) Here's the address when we get to that point:

For the specifics of what went on during the show, read my post here if you haven't already. http://boards.hgtv.com/groupee/forums/a ... 9911019662
EdWonbass and tylerxxx over here http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showth ... p?t=195084 saw the episode too. I may have been a little pissed when I wrote about what I saw, but it was all true. I may have gotten a couple quotes from the narrator a little bit wrong, but for the most part it's all what happened.
Sonic,
are you seriously telling me that they installed a door out of plumb?
They actually had to lift it to open it?
Rod
Yes, the door was installed at an angle on the Z axis so you actually have to lift it up to open it. Like a cellar door, but less extreme. If you let the door go when it's open it would slam shut. When I first saw the wall I thought they were going to at least make the door level, but then they put it in place and I couldn't believe it.
But on the bright side, it was probably a really flimsy door (since they did everything else wrong)!
Gee, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they probably didn't pull permits for that project!
haha. Yeah, I'd guess they didn't bother with a permit. They probably figured it wasn't needed since it's a detached garage/shed. Which, when you think about it, he really missed a GOLDEN opportunity to do it right. He could have had the whole "room within a room" thing if he had done it right.
Sonic,
did they state the angle they constructed their leaning walls at?
Rod
Here is a link to HGTV's description of the episode:
Soundproof Studio Garage Weekend Warriors : Episode WAR-306
My wife watches these types of shows a lot. She thinks it will eventually be aired again, but who knows.
Marc
I think he was saying he cut the bottom of the studs to 4 degrees. So 4 off 90. It was enough to make it look like a strange leaning tourist attraction. :)
Sonic,
I have a 4 page letter to HGTV prepared that will go out in thursday's mail.
Rod
Hi Rod, can you post a copy of the letter? I'd be interested in reading it. Of course, 4 pages of "You idiots!" could get a bit old....
Thanks so much Rod. It means a lot to me that something is getting done about this. If they do pull the episode it'll be like David and Galiath. :)
And I too would love to read the letter.
JWL, I don't speak to anyone like that - they never read past the firsdt paragraph of that's the tone. Yes I can post a link to it........ http://www.msnusers.com/RecordingGroups ... That won't open for me.
Sonic, go here first and join my group - anyone can - then go to either documents or click on the mink again and you should be fine. http://groups.msn.com/RecordingGroups RodThat won't open for me.
