Great progress (b)Ro! ;-)
Let me also update on the windows in the wall that separates the CR and LR. Added a trim, cloth to close the gap and a inner glass stop frame. All painted black. Tomorrow, yeah!, the two pieces of laminated glass will be inserted. Have these panes laying around for half a year already, it's time to put'm where they belong. When that's done, the live room is officially sound proof! :)

Current job: stucco! yes, we're just finishing of the walls and ceiling with some gypsumstucco work. After that we're gonna paint them. Exiting, it is all comming together now. When the finishing is done, it's time to add some mass to the floor, build accoustic corner absorbers and fixing the lights and wallconnectors. Some paint work here and there, a floorfinish and accoustic broadband aborbers on the walls and ceiling. So, hope to finish the live room Q12013 :) prolly won't happen... Some pix of the stucco work. Got help from an friend who has more stucco experience than the two of us combined :)

Excellent! Can't wait to see the magnetic seals as well!

Not sure if we're gonna do magnetic seals yet. The automatic-closer pushes the door against the rubber seals. Will see/measure how this will end-up, isolation wise.
Stucco-work, done. :) Cleaned up the mess. And the glass is set! Two pieces of laminated 6:2:6 glass 120x80cm. 30kg a pop. Sealed around the perimeter with kit/sealant. It's a sticky business :) Proof, as always, per pictures.

Is that a fingerprint I see on the inside of the glass? :) :shot: Seriously, nice work! Looking better and better all the time... - Stuart -
Great progress! My door closer seals the door nice at the top, but poorly at the bottom :( So I'm adding magnetic seals in hope for better results.. Does your door close perfectly from top to bottom? What kind of seals did you use?
Great job Ro !!
I'm impressed that the 'crew' is dressed color coordinate  AND ... the build is looking good ! 8)
Paint Job! Man, I'm exited this week. First we finished the "shell", the rooms are seperated and closed. Then we did the first paint job on the walls and ceiling. Having the first layer of paint ready really makes the whole room come together! wow! Here are two shots which don't share the same excitement as I currently experience, but it's a good indication of a job well done. Next week second coat of paint and one wall will be completely yellow. Seriously :) After the paint dries we'll add another layer of mass to the floor to hold the finishing floor. But before the finish gets on, we'll be building low-end absorbers! yeah, really looking forward to making those :) Next time gadget, next time!

How has it worked out so far Ro, you feel comfortable with what you have achieved as far as isolation and the overall acoustics of the space?

Hai X! Well, isolation wise... not sure. We've been building this without extra decoupling since it's a tiny space. Done as much as possible which means adding mass to the existing roof/ceiling, adding a second ceiling, added heavy walls in front of the brick-walls and make a double mass wall to separate live and studio area. It's all build on the same floor, so there's a big flanking path. the glass and doors at least are equal in mass compared to the walls. Rubber seals, sealant you name it. One thing we noticed while building the darn thing; we hardly can't hear the rain outside. in the beginning it was obvious when it was raining, so no surprise when leaving the building. Lately when we're exiting and it rains, we didn't notice it inside. So there's at least some isolation :) Room to room isolation was not the main focus. There's 3 floors. Each floor has one live room. I will add some extra mass to the floor/ceiling, but, as I wrote, i won't be dealing with intra-room isolation all that much. As long as the outside world won't hear us playing at level 11, I'm happy. I will do the test soon. Then we know! Acoustically it's one big echo room, which rocks. Ofcourse I will handle that in the upcoming months. meanwhile.... a little update. cheers, ro
Update on the paint-job. The Yellow Sub-Marine. Had some help from 5 dudes with the second coat of paint. While the ceiling and 3 walls are white, one wall got a bright yellow coat. And it rocks :) The picture doesn't really do justice, but you get the idea. Yellow it the new rock and roll standard! Next week we're adding some finishing details and start adding an extra layer of mass to the floor which will hold the finishing floor. Hope to start with building the low-end absorbers (aka bass-traps) this month. Exited. Ro

Hi Ro ... Yeah, I very much recall when my control room was done UP to the treatment point. We could barely speak above a whisper it was so loud in this new echo chamber. It was one of those ... 'Oh my ... what did I just build' :cen: As each piece of acoustic treatment went up, the changes were dramatic ... but they ALSO exposed the areas that had not yet been treated. Once the ceiling clouds were installed, the room went to a whole new level ... amazing. Then came time to install the ductless AC/Heat system, and I needed to pull the top section of my rear corner trap ... I just could NOT believe how horrible that one corner then became. It was like the sound of a basketball bouncing on a metal floor. Ping city ! I know the acoustic treatment does nothing for isolation ... but the noise floor of the room after treatment dropped dramatically. Just one of a series of emotional/ sonic trips that was experienced during the build. I only wished that I had done a convolution capture when I had the echo chamber ... would have been interesting to have and possibly use ... however, I will not be talking down the treatment anytime soon to do that :P Anyway ... congrats on the progress! Hope the results exceed !
thanx RJH, amazing story :) Last year I've done a small acoustic dress-up on a practice room of a friend band. The drums were taking over the room without treatment. So they called in for my help. I installed a as much corner-absorbers as possible, a few broadband panels on the walls and another dozen on the ceiling. The guys were amazed! So was I. Finally they could hear each other and not just the drummer :) Suddenly the room had focus and no more low-end booooooom. Simple treatment, super result. Every-time you put up some treatment the sound changes, to the better. Just as you described. wow. cheerio!
At the dawn of 2013, here's a what I've been working on last month. - Finished and painted the doors, doorframes, windowframes. All white. - Added extra floor to the existing floor for stability, levelness and some extra mass. Pix, as usual. Happy new year folks!

Hey Ro, Is it going to be a one or a two seal door? Are you going to use magnetic strips as well? great progress keep it up :)
Hai Vakis, It's a one-seal door, for now. I have magnetic strips already, but I wanna measure the "leakage" first. If it's already within limits I won't go the extra mile. There are automatic door closers already that will push the door against the rubberprofile. That wall, including the doors, isn't my main concern. Adding another trim to hold the second seal will only take up precious space. The doors are about 90cm wide now. When dealing with drumkits or large speakercabinets, every cm counts :) cheers bro!
Good to see you are still at it Ro, if anyone gets a "hell yeah" for stick-to-itiveness, it is you. You are the man! We all learn every time you post :)
thanx Brien
Happy to report we started on the first low-end absorber. It's located in the upper corner at the back of the room. Pix? not yet! :)
I want to share, atleast, my design for the low-end absorber in the upper back corner of the live room. The one we're currently building. Here's the detail. simple ply frame construction with white cloth and a small barrier (low-pass filter) made of plastic sheet. Inside it's packed with glass-wool. Finishing pieces of ply on the front. Simple, effective and cool :)
