Would this design work. It's a 20 x 20 garage (new construction home) with 10 foot ceilings. I record and mix mostly R&B and Rap, but I also will get into mastering. I would like to soffit-mount a set of monitors(thinking about Mackie HR824's). and my Halfer M5's on the desk for mixing, but if I need too, I'll get a third set of monitors just for mastering(where should they be placed?) I'll try to post a better photo but I just moved in and only have the laptop to work with.
thanks
another 20 x 20 x 10 garage design. would this work?

nukmusic the geometry of your control room is not correct. To soffit mount you need a certain geometry. Have you checked out the Studio plans at the SAE site http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html
also go to the Studios Under Construction site http://johnlsayers.com/Studio/index.htm and there are plans and studios being built.

thanks what I thought, Just the reason I asked after exploring this forum. What would you recommend? It's a 20 x 20 x 10 garage. I need a half bath for clients(can't have everyone in the rest of the house  ). I would like a nice control room and really only needed one vocal booth. Something good for mixing and if possible also nice for mastering. Thanks
r will this design work without soffit mounting? maybe not.
what I recommended is that you go to the links I offered. There are plans there. cheers johnWhat would you recommend?
Yes sir........I was reading them and still am. Thanks maybe I'll just let the professionals do it. (I have your website) not saying that I don't want to learn, because I try to take in as much info as possible.
20 X 20 garage(interior measurements)
I've read and started from square one. So far I have added the half bath(laundry room to the rear of toilet...easy plumbing joining). and the outside entrance door at the bottom-right. Door next to bath is existing door into house from garage. I have added the wall to the studio by offsetting them with a four inch air gap. The wall that covers the garage door will be six inches and offset 12 inches(6 inches from garage door) from main wall. I will continue to read and study the "Control Room" section. If I understand it right, I have to make the angles 60 degrees???
So - something like this maybe??

:D r u good ?
r u dam good?
you da man!!!!! very nice. I was just emailing a friend the link to this forum.
Actually - you don't need the double wall along the bottom do you?
cheers
john
no I wouldn't with your design. I may not need some of the double wall to the right of the outside entrance door either. The house is all new contruction and has all brick exterior. After add the bath, double walls, and 4" air gaps this is what I'm left with.
the bath's interior is roughly 7' x 3'
I think I'll go with this. Easy for me to build. Thanks John.
Yup - that looks good :)
cheers
john
just updated it. But I know it may need to be corrected or adjusted. I;ll keep reading , thanks John, big , big help. Big ups to this forum and the folks on it. I posted a link on ProTools Forum and emailed it to my friends in the r&b and Hip-hop world. :D :D :D

Just a point to remember and note. When you work out the reverb time of a room using say the calculator at SAE it uses the wall areas and works on the absorption in that area. Now if you look at the area you have treated compared to the total area you will find you haven't added much treatment at all, whereas if you look at my plans you will will see I use whole walls of treatment, not just small sections.

I'll keep reading the links you sent. We're still settling in the new house so my wife won't let me play on the labtop to long  eexspecially when I still haven't reconnected the other computer. Thanks for all you help.
John, on the subject of inside out walls. Since the beginning when you helped me with my design, I wanted to use my existing walls as if : and add an inside-out walls for the new wall in my studio. I should have asked you then but I didn't.
ok, if you refer back to the photo, you will see what the existing walls are made of. and after talking to Knightfly, he said that if the exterior brick wall is not air tight, it may not do to much for the STC. So the existing walls may only be about STC 33 or so. ............SO.. on the new walls, what is I use inside-out walls with 2 sheets of drywall and insulation??? And what type of insulation, I read that the "pink stuff" is not to good for stoppong sound. I could also use the side walls for slot resonator??? keeping the rear bass trap.
well - you can use double drywall....just a lot heavier to stand up. :) I'd suggest rockwool sheets as the insulation, we used dacron at leftbank - it's a local product made for sound isolation and is nice to use as it doesn't have the fibres to cause the itch :D
Just a note - on your last design you must angle your side walls more as they are parallel at the moment.
cheers
john
I'll have to check around for the "rockwool". I checked at lowes(mt second job) and at Home Depot, but all I have seen was regular rolls of house insulation, and blow-in bags of "cellulose". Any ideas on where I might get some from in the US. Also, I see if I can special order it from Lowes............I may have seen it(under a different name) and not known what it was
as to the side walls. I was thinking of making the slot resonator walls vertical so that they angle down to the floor........ or maybe one down and one up? As to the treatment in the recording rooms.........I'm guessing. Please correct me if need.
I think you missed my point - this is what I meant.
cheers
john
ok
Yes - I'm not sure what you mean by the Dark Green - you say low absorption - whereas I'd make it High/low absorption. Those two angular sections either side of the window marked dark green in the studio should be slots using the cavity behind to get depth.
cheers
john
ok will do thanks John, huge help
That's going to be a neat little studio Docta'J :D
Just one question - ceilings??
and - why not put a door from the entrance foyer straight into the studio for loading in gear??
cheers
