I'm converting my attached garage (20ftx18ftx8ft) into a studio. I want a vocal booth and a control room. there is a bedroom above the garage and I plan on building a room inside a room. attached is a basic layout of what i'm thinking. I really wish I could do this in google sketchup, but I can't figure that program out yet...so if there is anyone who is willing to re-create this layout in google sketchup I would be extremely appreciative. don't worry about 100% measurements. I can try to fix and make the adjustments... sometimes you just need a push or a head start which is what i desperately need to get this going in sketchup.... anyways back to the studio....
1.) what are your thoughts on QuietRock?
2.) What is the least amount of "space" from each wall I will lose due to sound proofing... I'm thinking a -1 foot from each wall. - I know it's not a huge room, but I would like to keep at least 10-11 feet (width) in my control room. does this look possible??
3.) any other thoughts.

welcome! please update your profile to include your location. you should also check out the read-me before posting sticky to ensure you can provide enough details on what you are trying to achieve including isolation requirements etc.
in this case i would go with an angled wall design on the CR to allow the isolation booth to be bigger and the foyer roughly the same as your proposed size. angle the front wall to enable the side walls to be symmetrical relative to your listening position. the big challenge is your ceiling and ceiling height - also the ability to beef up all the existing walls with additional mass.
unless the quiet rock is less expensive than 5/8" ire code drywall (not likely) go with the drywall. depending on your structure you may also need to so something with the floor to reduce flanking.

thanks glen, When you say to angle the front wall... I'm not quite sure I follow. do you mean to turn the CR room around to face the Vocal Room? and just to be sure when you say front wall you mean the wall in the CR room closest to the "existing property fire wall" correct? Would your way still give me 10-11 Feet of CR room. I know it's already pretty tight, but I don't wanna feel too cramped either.
after a while of trying to figure it out, I was able to map out my design in sketchup... here it is...
Room within a room... Single Wood Studs- Most likely 16 oc (unless 24 oc really makes that big of a difference.)
a.) as for walls #1 and #3 i don't know what i'm going to do... The existing garage walls have no insulation... i'm trying to avoid the triple leaf. i am building a room within a room, so all the new walls will be built like this.. interior side will have 2x4 studs with R13, Genie Clips (decoupling), 7/8" 25 gauge furring channel, 2 layers of 5/8" Drywall. i'm thinking of adding Green Glue (dampening) between these layers... as for the exterior... as of now i'm leaving the R13 exposed. (facing the existing side garage walls)
b.) For walls #2 and #4 interior will be the same, but the exterior will be different.. the exterior of these walls will have 1, most likely 2, 5/8" layers of Drywall. Except for the Vocal Booth sectioned wall (to avoid triple leaf, correct?)... I'm not really as concerned about the VB as I am the control room.
c.) Because i am no longer floating the floor (i researched about concrete slab and learned it's better NOT to float the floor) my ceiling will be around 8ft. although most areas of my garage ceiling is around 10ft, I'm limited because of beams going across my garage... or am i? the beams run from walls #2 to wall #4. there are 2 of them. and they are not centered with the control room.
d.) I've been searching these forums and trying to figure out "angles." i'd like to have soffits for my tannoy 12 speakers and use an argosy dual 15 desk with my ns10's and krk v8's. i found a few "rectangular" rooms that I might b able to use as a guideline.
e.) my neighborhood is pretty quiet. small gated community with 7-8 homes. my neighbors are cool, but I don't want to take advantage of that and need to do what i can do to keep it a peaceful area... my budget is $8,500.00 - which I've already spent 1k of it on the genie clips, green glue sealant, and other materials. not counting my vocal booth... for 1 layer of drywall (3 walls and ceiling) I need about 25 4x8 sheets. which comes out to be $150.00 @ 6.00 a sheet. adding layers is easy. but i don't think i can add more than 2 layers of drywall on the interior walls right??
I know i wrote a lot, but i was trying to give as much detail as possible. any pointers? help? advice? ideas?
go with the 24" oc as it will be better LF performance. also, if you're building individual walls, then skip the clips and channel as it's redundant. consider angles on the front of the CR using slats etc. this will help in the isobooth as well. you could go with 3x 5/8" on the isobooth walls.
thanks gulfo for your help...
1.) i am going with 24" oc (no problem there)
2.) add angles in control room (got it, no problem there.... I've actually found several layouts on this site that are very similar to mine with angles... (geoff's studio build

and also mika's studio are the closest i think.

3.) as far as genie clips go.. I understand what you mean about decoupling a wall that's already gonna be decoupled... but I have a few questions now.
walls #1 and #3
I started tearing down walls #1 and #3. Is it better to build another wall? or use the clips? I will add insulation r13 of course... but between clips and double wall, a double wall is better right? i realize I will lose a little space, but i don't mind losing it in length.. it's width I really want to save.
walls #2 (garage door) and #4...
for these walls, the genie clips will benefit me correct? I don't have the space for a double studded wall. I plan to build a wall (single stud) double 5/8" drywall, r13 insulation, genie clips, channel, double 5/8" drywall.
I already bought the clips, but I know I can still use them somewhere (ceiling, booth, walls # 2 and #4...
anyways... here are some pics of the actual room. hopefully it will give you and/or anyone else who's reading a sense of what i'm working with.
any info or pointers is much needed and even more appreciated.
it would be better to create the decoupled wall instead of clips unless you really cannot afford it otherwise (space, money, etc)
