some good news! did some sound level tests today and although I need to snag some bits in the amp room, mainly caulking, the results were pretty good. I cranked up some monitors to over 100dbc in the amp room (aprox 50db ambient) and upstairs (where my main concern is) it read at around 60db - pretty good I thought. You can here something, but as the control room isn't built yet, and there is leakage from the amp room downstairs - doors not quite fitting properly and a boarded up window not sealed - I think i can get a bit more, especially when the room is skimmed with plaster (?). One thing I was a little disappointed with was room to room levels (only 25-28db reduction), but as i said there's only one wall built as yet, and read somewhere that all walls act as one unit, so am expecting a bigger reduction than initial tests. I will, however, be beefing up the one of the doors , although it's solid core - 1 3/4 inch, it leaks sound. So I'll be attaching another door to it My wife will be happy!! chris
"Just to say as well, that I've copied the suggested way of building walls/ceilings - backer rod/caulk where corners meet and where walls/ceiling meet" It is a poor technician that blames the tools. This is your first time yes?
Hey Brien, don't get me wrong, I wasn't blaming anyone/thing (apart from myself and/or my builders). Just trying to pre-empt questions about the contruction. What do you think the cause of the vibration from the i-beam in my amp room is then? unfinished construction of adjacent room or contact with the beam? yes it is my first - and last - time. cheers chris
"The sound was travelling through the floor joists, on to the metal i-beam ..." Directly into your concrete floor. That is flanking doing it's business, unfortunately. From the picture you provide of this beam it does look as though some of your framing may be in contact with the beam as well. But if I had to hazard an educated guess, it is the pole that penetrates the slab that is most likely the culprit.
Thanks Brien, i intend to box/insulate those posts to attempt to limit the flanking. Think the photo is misleading, although the new beam my builders put in is a little close to the metal i-beam, and I think it's twisted a little too, it's not touching. I intend to have a larger gap on the other beams . if it's a major problem later, I'll have to address the amp room beam. have been getting on with framing. will post some pictures later cheers chris

had a quick question, if anyone can answer please? What should I do with the areas OUTSIDE my room-in-a-room i.e. I have angled walls, so have a gap behind the walls and at the ceiling. I'm mainly concerned with the ceiling: should I leave it bare, fill with insulation or fill with insulation, then put some plasterboard up being careful not to touch my new room?? you can see it on picture - LRtoCRold above. The section on the left is 'dead' space, there are joists in that section chris
did I ask (another) stupid question?

Hey Carsten, I have to apologise to you and everyone on the forum for not updating my build diary. I was working all hours to get the studio finished as i had clients waiting to come in. Not the best way round to do things i admit! Anyway I completed the studio (mostly) in early february and have been working hard actually recording people - I forgot how much I missed it. For anyone who's interested - here's my website details with pictures of the studio http://www.reservoirstudios.co.uk I'd be more than happy to give any information on the build if anyone's interested, materials/budget (although I haven't told my wife how much it cost yet!!!) - I have tons of photos I need to sift through (some are on the website). There don't seem to be enough hours in the day - even now! I've got a fair bit of work coming up, will try to answer any posts as soon as i can. Lastly, I'd like to thanks everyone who helped me along the way - i would have made some serious mistakes, if it wasn't for the kind folks on the forum here's a taster of the studio
