Hi, i have 2 options for building a wall that will seperate my control room from my live room. First of all here's a link to another, older post of mine: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11321 Option no.1: The wall will be straight and flat. Then wood frames will be placed to shape the angles in the corner (30 degrees) and to soffit mount monitors near to the ceiling at an angled position. The corners will be filled with fiberglass or rockwool. Option no.2: The actual brick wall will be angled at 30 degrees in the corners. Monitors will be soffit mounted again at the same spot, near the ceiling. The length of the control room to the door will be at 4.5 meters and the width is 3.4 meters. The live room will be at 6.3 meters and the width again at 3.4 meters. My thoughts on this are that i want as much glass as possible on the seperation wall, as to make the place look bigger instead of a hole, and have good communication with the musicians. I'm a bit confused now about everything so if i have forgotten everything please ask What do you think are the pluses and minuses of both constructions and which one would you recommend.

First of all, your topic’s title is contradictory to say the least. What do you mean "building wall TOMORROW, please advice?". You are going to build a wall tomorrow (a CR's front wall, the most complicated wall to build in my book) and you're asking for advice one day earlier? So what happens if no one’s answered you by morning? Will you build either of these options based on what? Your knowledge on this subject, which is obviously not adequate, if you are spending the time asking for advice in the first place? Sorry friend, wrong approach to the subject, waaay too wrong... I'm not getting down on you or anything, I'm just trying to protect you from any rush (and expensive) mistakes you probably gonna make without proper preparation. My advice to you is, take your time (if you have some that is), get to know the theory by reading your books, go to people that are in the construction business for a living and get to know the practise, ask your questions in this forum and if you're patient (hint, hint... ) and lucky, you'll get some answers to get you going... If not, heck, you go with the flow and the knowledge you acquired from all the sources mentioned above. Bottomline? Don't start building your wall tomorrow, if you don't know exactly what you are doing...
Now, for your question... 99% of the advice you are going to get from this forum is gonna be positive towards your first option. Build your wall and then add the soffit mounts frame. I may be the only person in this forum suggesting and asking about your second option in THIS and THIS topic for more than a month now but no one's given me a definate answer yet... And I'm gonna be a fool for sure if I start building it tomorrow... Patience, remember?
I've just read your old topic... you've got the space and it's gonna be a great little studio, if you build it like a pro (hint... ). PS: I liked the poster on studioempty.jpg... I'm also a fan... PS2: And I just realised that you are from Cyprus! Crete says "yeia sou re paixti!"
Hi, all my studies have been made on the first wall and i've done some research on that, i asked the person who is gonna build the wall today, if the second option was possible and he said yes. I'm leaning towards the first option cause that's what i planned to do from the beginning, but now that i know for sure that the second option is possible, i'm wondering what the best option is. I've decided to postpone it for a few days because i know nothing on the angled wall. So any answers will reaaaaally help at this confusing hour. Thanks for your opinion and advice, filara! ;D
off to a shower now, i've just spent the last 5 hours carrying a demolished wall out of the studio :). I'll post the dimensions of the first wall example to also listen to your opinions about the thickness of the bricks, sizes and so on.

But of course it's possible! That was not the matter of question... Is it gonna work as it should? How much are the materials gonna cost you? Do you have the detailed plans for this construction that your, so eager to get to work, builder is gonna need to build it without trying to invent the wheel and how much is he going to charge you for it? Some of the real questions you should get answers for... I'm still trying to get mine... :?

Wise decision...

Anytime, filaraki! :)
Back, nice and clean. I'ts a little weird talking to you in english but anyways :D it's an international forum. to have your questions answered: -Cost is of no importance, if it's significantly better i'll pay for it. I'll only build the studio once. -I've got a plan of the studio from above on paper and front with full detail but dont have a scanner. I hate working with the mouse, i'm faster with a pen and a ruler. -I've also posted the image with the proportions of how it's going to be. (made it in google sketchup which really annoyed me, cause i know 3ds max better than that :P, it's tragic) Anyways it was still faster than i would i've made it in 3dsmax. The wall will be made of concrete blocks. It will be a double wall of about 30 cm thickness and with a gap of 5 cm. The question here is: Do I fill the gap with fiberglass/rockwool, Or do i leave it blank? P.S. Gianni, I'm also a drummer :D, tu pa tutu praa! -Edit- : I replaced the pic with the proportions, the window lenght was wrong at 85cm, it sould be 65.

where are you putting your speakers? standard is 1.2m height on an equilateral triangle meeting at the listening position. This puts them right in your windows, as far as I can tell. Andre
I'm going to have my near field monitors on stands (Dynaudio BM6a) And Im thinking of buying and soffit mounting Dynaudio's M3A on the wall near the ceiling. If i do that i suppose i need to lower the height of the windows, so that wall covers the whole back of the monitors, in order for the bass frequencies to bounce back from a harder wall surface. -Im going to angle them of course if i do it that way. -Also i'm going to have my near field monitors at the height of 1m, I've read that you can go from 80 to a bit more then a meter. Do you think just 1m will be enough?

I think you are heading disaster without planning all the design and sharing the design with Sketchup so people can suggest ideas/improvements. Andre
I'll try when i learn the software a bit more. That's what i've read the height of the monitors should be, and i'm just asking for another opinion. thanks
The precise height of the monitors actually depends on the listener's body measurements and the preferred seat height. On average, it's 120cm... From the video you posted on your old topic, I could tell by the way you sit on the drums (geia sou sunaderfe!) that you are a tall fellow. Sit comfortably on your chair and have someone measure the distance from the floor to your ears. That's where your speakers height should be. In the meantime, use the 120cm height as Andre suggested. I worked on your wall design for a few minutes and I have a sketchup file for you to check out. If I was going to build my wall with concrete blocks, I would build it like this: One layer of 1,5cm drywall, one layer of 10cm concrete blocks and one layer of 5cm insulation on each side with a 5cm air gap in between. Total thickness: 38cm. Pretty close to your estimation. I've also included the listening position and ray of sound from your speakers on 60 degree and 90 degree angles. Conclusion: You can forget all about soffit mounting, if you insist on having those windows. You can use the double sliding doors that John's suggesting on his designs instead. Lower STC but more viewing area than a normal studio door and more space available for soffits. Keep a cool head, John

OMG Thats amazing!!:D Eyxaristo anthrope na eisai kala!! (thanks my man, be always well:P) Excellent sketchup work! Thank you!! I've thought of using a sliding door but i think they would need more space, cause actualy only the one half of the door slides. I dont mind making the current door's width a bit smaller if it will help with the whole process. If i am to soffit mount speakers, i was thinking about making it like the image i've posted below, tell me what you think:D, This is what inspired me. Thanks again John!

That studio's front wall is not applicable in your situation... You need the luxury of that kind of width and height in your room to get those angles right enough for soffits above windows, width and height that, unfortunately, you don't have... Check the measurements on the file I gave you... I already decreased the door's and windows' width to 90cm and 60cm respectively and you can even go lower than that but it won't save you... You also need around 50cm free wall space on your left and right for corner bass traps.... Had enough? :P My humble opinion is that you sure need more visual space between the CR and LR than you had with your old wall. So do that. Have your windows and place your monitors on stands. Treat your rooms properly and forget about soffit mounting... Simple as that. Cheers, John PS: I hope we are talking about building your soffits AFTER you build your wall, cause I won't even touch that soffits-in-wall subject without an expert around to guide me... :?
Yes we're talking about adding the soffits later on. Here's another picture btw, this one isnt that wide and it's closer to the proportions of my room. Wouldn't something like this, with a door in the middle be possible?

This picture is pretty close how i want it to be, I will try to make a detailed model in sketchup and post it. I'd really love to have soffit mounts like the pic but if it's not possible i'll have to compromise. cheers
I've posted a sketchup file concept here: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... 1718#81718
