Room construction: drywall with 2x4 studs.
I am trying to figure out how I can mount my 'first reflection point' (mid/high freq) panels on the wall. They will be 4" panels, and I would like to space them 4" from the wall for an optimal air gap. Can you guys point me in the right direction on how I should mount these panels so as to accommodate this 4" clearance?
I believe I have the bass traps that will be installed on the wall-ceiling horizontal corners figured out. I will simply find some cheap chain or something at Lowe's or Home Depot and suspend them from the ceiling. They will only be supported at the four corners so that no chain will be 'loose' enough to rattle under it's associated resonant frequency. Any feedback on that idea for the bass traps?
The wall-wall corner bass traps will probably be superchunks with a frame mounted to the wall itself - pretty straightforward.

You mean the 1st-reflection from your speakers?
use the "mirror' method ;)
Set up your desk, monitors and chair. Have a second person come over to help you on this one.
Take a seat in the directors chair (the chair in which you mix ofcourse) and have your friend hold up a mirror. Let him slide the mirror along the walls untill you can see your monitors in the mirror (still sitting in your chair). THAT's the first reflection point. Repeat the process on the other wall and ceiling (put up a cloud).
You also wanna check this sticky in the acoustics forum

I think he's asking more along the lines of, once i've figured out where we want to mount the panels, now how do we mount them? this has been a question for me as well, although looking at the sticky on design diaries I have found some solutions.
That is correct. I know where to put them already. I want to get some recommendations on how to mount them 4" from the face of the wall. That's what I thought you were asking too - Since that is the case, read through these threads. Brad did a great job of showing how he made his and you can see how he hung them. http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9756 Sandlefoot does a great job as well. Check out how he uses a long strip along the ceiling to string them from. He even uses wire twisted as a corkscrew to go into the material and hold it in place. http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7254 Also there are MANY examples to see photos of in the Acoustics section of this great site. I hope you can key in on that info and have a fruitful research session. That is correct. I know where to put them already. Thanks!
aah, excusse I misread your Q.
I recently made a "DIY Acoustic panels" thread in the acoustics forum part where I pointed out a bunch of panel builds. Check that to get inspired :)
You know...Thanks!
