Thoughts for initial construction

Post by Brian D. »

Hello all, Great site and thanks to all providing info both questions and answers.
Since the first of the year 03' I closed down my home business (I went to work for one of my customers), and now have a detatched building apprx. 24'x28' that I plan on building my recording studio in. It is on the rear half of my 1/2 acre property about 200ft. or more form neighboring houses.
I have done a number of drawings on a program called Punch Home Design that I had before I found this site (I downloaded Smartdraw and
couldn't figure it out fast enough, Punch is way easier for me for now) and hopefully I will be able to figure out how to attach the file to this thread.
For budget reasons  I thought about first (cheaper?) building one ISO booth in one corner that could serve for vox or amp room, I know that if I were to put in a control room and then live room also small lounge, will work out toilet later, I would be building double walls, with whatever door or sight (windows to rooms) but just starting with an ISO booth.
There are actually four 6X3ft windows existing nice view outside which I would like to keep some enjoyment of outside environment available but can alter to whatever works best not crucial.
If I set up my recording rig/equipment in the larger part of the room I'm sure I'll still have to do the treatment to the rest of the room, but anyway I'm just trying to get a space outside of the house more isolated and conductive to creating/recording and as budge allows to do another part of the studio. It's a shame to have this type of space available and not do something with it even at a room by room basis.
So many questions  but? would it be better to tear off the existing sheetrock on walls as it is now when I build the inside walls for the airspace? don't know if that makes sence.
Anyhow sorry for the long post and thanks to anyone who may have suggestions or questions.
We'll see if my drawing of the whole studio design on Punch Pgm attaches and I did'nt get around to add any dimentions as I just figured out how to export the file from one computer to this computer for the internet.
sincerely, Brian

Brian - it would be nice if you could attach a picture so we know what we are talking about. Does the drawing program you are using export the image as a JPEG or GIF or BMP file??

cheers

Thankyou John, for responding so soon. Yes I was aware the attachment did'nt post, I'm still trying to figure this out, and so far all I know is the file is done in .PDF (Punch Design File?) so I'll have to look into it a little more and see if I can convert it to the right format.
Thanks again, Brian

Well OK, I thought I had the file converted to .BMP but it did not attach, I quess I'm going to have learn how to use Smartdraw as it looks like that is the pgm. that works for others here. But at least I'm still able to quickly do up designs for other purposes in the Punch Design Pgm.
So anyhow, I guess my main idea was to try to get some kind of isolation room which would be about a 7X8ft w/non-paralel walls with appropriate door windows and from there add a CR and so on as budget permits, or would trying to build one room at time not work out as I may have to integrate the rooms all in one shot?
And as budget permits of course I'm going to have to look some kind of HVAC system.
I'm just completing a house refinancing retiring alot of debt into the equity so I'm just trying to make available funds go far (paying as I go) before I attempt to spend whatever it will take to finish the project.
Thankyou, Brian.

Thanks John and BrYan, This is forcing me to have to learn more nomenclature and basic computer systems of operation not that thats bad , just that that old aging process has really slowed me down learning wise but I guess I'm going to have to learn to E-mail attachments too. It's all positive in the long run though.

Anyhow I'm going to work with the Smartdraw pgm. and see how that goes.

I think that I have the basic studio layout as acceptable to me and as much as I have been studying the information you all provide I would be greatly more confident in building it ( I can do alot of the work myself) but there are some things that just seeing the process done in real time would help make some of the drawings and procedure discriptions alot more understandable, and the thought of trying to educate or locate w/expense a professional  I rather wade through all the learning curve and be happy with what I get.

This isn't exactly going to be a commercial studio. May just do limited Project stuff to help in increasing the experience (like acoustic/folkrock), so just getting enough isolation from neighbors and work on making the rooms sound the best I can with what I've got (-$$) "D'oh!" :!:

So back to the Smartdraw(ing) table and maybe I'll still try to increase my computer skills and attempt to e-mail John that .PDH file

Sincerely, BrIan

OK! Here it goes again adding the attachment.

The existing walls are sheetrocked I kind of asked if removing the sheet rock was require when you build the internal walls such as the ISO booth and then CR etc... Just wondering, I thought I understood double walls between rooms but not exactly against existing outer walls.
Existing 30 in. entry door will have to be enlarged.

Advice/comments appreciated.
