Good evening...My name is John and I am what you might consider a newbie, so any help would be greatly appreciated.. I am a musician/songwriter who would like to take my craft to the next step...I own a house in Las Vegas that has the room to add a studio in it, but I need to add an addition in order to do this right... What I am looking to do is add approximately 600-800 square feet to the back to build a control room and a live room, maybe even a vocal room and/or a drum room...I understand that it is pretty important to have a designer assist me, and I would like to explore the cost of that, as well as anyone that would come highly recommended... For the construction side, I would certainly never try to build this myself, as that is not my talent..I would have to have to hire a contractor...I am not sure if an ordinary contractor would build this based on the designers plans, or if that too is specialized... At the end of the day, I would like to have a very nice, asthetically pleasing studio, but that is, more importantly, as functional as possible... If it matters, I have flat land and if neccessary can go to 14' ceiling hights, maybe even a bit higer, but not much... Is there a general rule of thumb in how to figure the cost of a project like this? Maybe per square foot or something? Again, thank you in advance for taking a few minutes for me... John
Hi John, it seems you have 2 choices, you can either start studying a lot and come up with your own design (with help from this forum), or hire someone to do it for you. There are plenty of expert designers on this board you can hire, including and most especially our gracious host. In the meantime, have a look around the forum, there are quite a few designs floating around for floorplans, etc. As far as construction techniques, lots of reading to do in the forum, also there is Rod's book. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the reply...I do appreciate it... As to my choices, honestly, I feel that hiring a professional is the way to go for me....Even if I had the time to do all of the studying, because this is such a major investment, I'd probably go this route in the end anyhow... I'd love to know what something like this could cost to design, and then of course, if there is a general range of what it could cost to build...Maybe its a cost per square foot or something?
