Hello all ! We are new to this forum and are needing some help trying to make the best the space we have to work with. Room size: 14'7" Long and 9'7" Wide and the ceiling measures 7'6" We have built a vocal booth in this space already and the outside measures 5'1" long and 6'9" wide. The walls are built with 2x4s and 5'8'' sheet rock filled with acoustical insulation(walls of vocal booth are 5 inches thick). The room is currently empty and we want to get ideas on acoustic solutions for our space to achieve the best possible recording and mixing space possible. Thanks in advance!
Aloha and welcome to the forum, Congrats on your studio build! In the interest of helping us help you, please check out this thread and try to answer as many of the bold points as is pertinent - http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Also, a layout of your space (hand drawn or sketch up is fine) with doors, windows and their location/measurements would be helpful. Thanks! Looking forward to your build, Aloha 8)
Well I hope this helps a little more. First off we living in atlanta,GA. The location of our space is in the basement of my home that was remodeled about 3 years ago. The structure is build with cement blocks on three side othe the studio and is filed with cement and steel rebar. It is framed with 2x4's 16 inches apart and has R13 insulation between all of the studs. the ceiling is framed with 2 x10's and is also filled with R13 insulation. All is covered with 1/2 inch sheetrock. The floor is cement as of now and we are open to options concerning the floor. At the back side of the studio the ceiling drops about 6 inches ( equals 7ft height )about 1 foot from the back wall. The Vocal booth was done a little different. It was framed with 2x4's and has R13 insulation between the studs ( 16 inches apart ). We used 5/8th inch firecore sheetrock on the inside and outside on the booth. There is also a opening for glass that is 4 feet above the floor and measures 4 feet wide x 30 inches tall facing the control area. The floor of the vocal booth is wood( 1/4 inch plywood, 1/2 inch wood floor). We have set aside about $2000 to address acoustic issues. And are hoping not to have to redo everything. P.S. There are no acoustic treatments in place so do your thing guys !!! Thanks again for your time and I'm glad i found this forum!!!!

Aloha, Whoa! You be living large there! Resized your pic to eliminate scrolling and be back in bit with a few thoughts. In the meantime, check out this site for some ideas on DIY treatments. http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.htm Aloha 8)
Sorry about the sizing issue. I can't seem to get my software to resize it.
Wow that looks great !!! How much would it cost to do something like that in my room? And would i need anything on my ceiling? And for the size of my space should i consider setting my monitors in wall ? We have a pair of Event TRN 8's . What are your thoughts?
Oh, what should I do about the vocal area ?
Aloha,
Wow that looks great !!! How much would it cost to do something like that in my room?
That depends on how much the materials are going for in your area. Perhaps a spreadsheet of the materials needed and cost will help estimate your cash outlay. (3/4" MDF sheets, 3" Roxul Mineral Wool/OC 703 @ 2.5-3 pcf, 2" x 4" stud framing, screws, acoustic caulk, etc) There are several threads that cover the building process. Perhaps a read through the "Stickies" in the construction forum would be helpful. It may also depend on whether or not you will be doing the work or hiring someone.
And would i need anything on my ceiling?
I would recommend hanging a cloud up there - do a "search" for "clouds" and read up on them and their construction.
And for the size of my space should i consider setting my monitors in wall? We have a pair of Event TRN 8's . What are your thoughts?
My opinion would be to soffit mount your monitors. Having worked in both situations in the same room has convinced me of the vast improvement to be gained by soffiting. (Mackie HR824's)
