Hello every body, My name is Mike and after months of designing and many questions and help from kendale and Guffo thanks guys, I am really looking forward to building my concrete slab. I bought Rods book, again many thanks mate and I have read all on isolated concrete slab designs with expansion joints. However, I have submitted to my local council an H class slab based on local soil test which has no expansion joint. (see my slab.) Also you will notice I have NO isolation deck drawn on top of slab see Q2...!!! Q1 Is an expansion joint really necessary in the slab to seperate my CR from my live room or can I get away with not putting it in? Q2. When the slab is done should I then build an isolated wooden deck with a 100 m/m air space between the slab as per SAE site. I have read heaps on this subject of isolated wooden decks in basements in the US but I'm not 100% sure I should do this or what indeed the alternatives are in terms of isolation. My studio is not in a basement, it is being built from scratch on a slab outside, then attached to my existing house. see floor plan pic thanks Mike

A1: Most likely not necassary, although it will help with isolation. Answer really depends on wether you want to extra isolation gain and whether or not you want to bother with the extra work. The big thing about the decision of course is it'll be a lot hard to add an expansion joint after wards. Also if you're going for full isolated slab to truly get the most of the expansion joint then your exterior/outer walls would go on there own footer (small slab) then each of your rooms and inner walls would go on there own slab... each of these slabs would have to have a footer as well as you can not (well should not :D ) build on the edge of a slab with no footer.
