Haven't tried AAC stuff - but note that I still think STC is a good "liar's tool" - note that in this instance, you can get STC 62 with same thickness of concrete, same air gap, 2 layers 5/8 on RSIC's, but without the third leaf the low end is at least 10 dB BETTER (still the same essential STC, since it's centered on 500 hZ) - phooey... Thats why I said...do you see what I see?  :P Hmmmm, makes me wonder who designed this assembly...for SOUND...afterall, they were testing it at a lab. fitZ
Yea, but STC must be a measure thats acceptable to building designers, no? Otherwise, what would be the point? And who would "buy" it if it isn't a measure of TRUTH, for what it is. Otherwise the labs are full of shit.!!
Besides, I only posted this after seeing a program on AAC. Seems like incredible stuff.
Oh, and Steve said the magic word. CONCRETE....ie...forms, labor, etc. Not so with AAC. And if you get the same rewards...hey, what the hell. Seems logical to me.
Hmmmm, seems like building a "floating room in a room" outta AAC would be a fairly easy task. Even the ceiling, as it can be ordered with rebar precast in the blocks. Don't know how it compares with standard stickbuilt and concrete floor, but it may work out cheaper in the long run, considering multiple layers of drywall, labor, caulking etc. Floor would probably still have to be standard concrete slab with engineer edges. Although I wonder about floor systems made of AAC too. Hmmmm, I'll have to check into it. fitZ
Yeah, be sure and link to any cool stuff you find - and STC is still being used as near as I can tell for TWO reasons - one, most bureaucracies move slower than a slug on salt, and two, it's a better system to use if you're selling snake oil, 'cause you don't have to do anything for low frequencies :?
Flolks, I've worked with this material and it's what it's portrays itself to be..... Very sound effective in the frequencies that STC are concerned with - BTW - I wouldn't really view that as a 3 leaf system - with a rigid channel on the left hand face - and only a 5/8" air cavity (filled with insulation) - I doubt very much that it would exhibit the characteristics of 3 leaves when finished. Steve, Buddy - I don't agree with that assessment of the reasons for the industry to continue using STC Ratings...... STC works very well in the world of hotels / motels / apartments / offices, etc. The fact that no-one has stepped up to the plate to develope a test criteria suitable for Studios might well be that there isn't a large enough piece of the market place to justify the expense involved. After all - it isn't as simple as just coming up with something - once you establish a set of standards - they have to be submitted to - reviewed - and accepted by the vast majority of the orginazations in the field - and that in and of itself is no small endevor.......... The question becomes this I suppose............ do we really need a standard at all? We seem to be doing quite well as it sits now......... what are we really missing? Even if we did estabish a standard.......... I don't picture things like the existing studies being duplicated to veryify results - so we'd be starting over from scratch as it were........ Then again maybe it's me- what is it that I am missing? Sincerely, Rod
