Enlightened ones know that STC is "a very old method for ranking walls over the frequency range of 125 - 4000 Hz" and that "STC is not without significant limitations, and for a great many applications it is not a good measure of sound isolation at all" (quoted from Green Glue Company's awesome STC debunker article, "Understanding STC, what it means and doesn’t mean" -- a must read!). Officially, we know that STC stands for "Sound Transmission Class." Let's think of some new spelled-out names for STC. Me first:

You get the idea... :) With a little luck, this could be the thread we point everyone to when they say they want good STC numbers. 8) --Keith
LOL.............. that is cute........ But, sorry Keith, The STC rating is an excellent tool when used for it's designed purposes. No one constructing walls for hotels, meeting rooms, etc. are ever dissapointed when the work is completed according to design and tested results. The fact that it isn't a standard to be effectively used for Studio construction (or any other construction where LF transmissions are really an issue) does not change the fact that it serves a very usefull purpose. A ruler is not a stupid tool just because it can't be used as a pry-bar.......... same goes with STC ratings. Sincerely, Rod
Ahhh, great point Rod. :-) I guess I should have clarified in my initial post that its "suckiness" is only as it relates to studio construction and design, which is, after all, what this forum is all about! :) Even the Green Glue Company Web site does state that it has some merit. 8) --Keith
