Door and windows help

Hi! Near my parents' house there was another smaller abandoned one which they reconstructed. I then convinced them of letting me use the space to practice with my band and set up a portable studio. The ceiling has accoustic foam covering it, and as you can see from the pictures below the walls are thick, made of stone and bricks with an insulation material between the two to prevent the heat to dissipate. The main problems I have are the windows and door. I need something to sound-proof them but it can't be permanent, that is, I need to remove whatever I put on them after I finish my sessions. There's a neighbouring house 20 meters away and I need to practice and record at night, so I need to minimize sound leakage. Will a thick foam and blanket on them solve my problem? What do you suggest? Many thanks! ivo

Ivoc, the pix don't work :( (why not *upload* them using file attachment instead of hosting them elsewhere.)
What is down that hole where the ladder is? As for the sound proofing of windows and doors, no, heavy blankets wont work. You need probably some instulation attached to plywood/mdf that you can fasten into the window or door. Spend some time reading and searching through this forum here and see what others done. It will give you plenty of ideas.
I think you would want to build something that approximated a half-way decent studio wall (mass/air/mass), into a box that would fit tightly into the window and door spaces. Put a couple handles on the inside face, and it should at least be a workable solution. - Andy
Thanks for the ideas. The hole where the ladder is will lead to a control room. The hole will be closed so there will be two independent rooms. There are no windows in the control room so I'll just have to worry about sound treatment. Bassrocks: I think your idea is interesting. What materials do you think will work, taking into account that this wall has to be portable?
Aloha, Try a search for "window plug." I believe Steve covered it in a thread somewhere quite thoroughly. Aloha 8)
u guys see pix? huh?
Yup - has Portugal got some kinda embargo goin' on against the Netherlands?? :?
hi! there're no problems between the two countries!! I've seached for window plugs here in the forum but couldn't find a specific topic on the issue. I found some things on a google search. What kind of materials should I use to make a good window or door plug that would isolate the sound? MDF board and fiberglass? Thanks!
Hi! Many thanks for that!! :P
This thread (from Kendale's post, above) has a picture of what I meant: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=239 You'll want it to fit as tightly as possible to the windows and door -- which might be a problem with the first window shown in your pictures and the door. You might have to "scribe" it to the rock to get a tight seal. You can also use automotive door gasket to help seal it. In making a plug for the door, make sure it doesn't end up being too heavy to move conveniently. Also, make sure you don't have any fires while the plug is in place. It looks like a cool building. - Andy
This is exactly what I was looking for! I only have one question: what kind of material should I use as insulation inside the cavity? Fiberglass? Thick foam? Thanks!
Aloha, Most of the treatments prescribed here on the forum have called for either Owens Corning 703 (fiberglass) or Roxul AFB mineral wool (or equivalant) @ 2"-3" thick and a density of 2.5 pcf rather than the average "foam" treatments. Aloha 8)
