If a standard wall with sheetrock on each side is STC36 what is the STC if there is only 1 layer of sheet rock on one side? what is the STC is there is 2 layers on the same side (zero on the backside)? what is the STC is there are 2 layers with RC on the same side (zero on the backside)?
Have you been here: http://www.stcratings.com/ and here http://irc.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/ie/acoustics/ ... ls1_e.html

Got to include insulation in the cavity to get that number, not making it a standard wall.

I think it's 28, but no member of this forum even wants to know this number. This means normal speech is completely heard from other side of wall.

What ever STC # it is... it's the same number. With out the other mass the RC would be useless. I'll guess it's in the 30's, if insulation is in the equation some how.... what this means: Loud speech heard and understood from other side of wall. Packrat... it may help if you keep all your questions in the same thread Marc
Thanks, Marc -- you beat me to the punch and did a more thorough job than I was going to do. 8) packrat, STC doesn't mean squat for what you're doing. I know, I know -- all the purveyors of soundproofing supplies, many of which are total crap, all market the STC improvements their products supposedly make... But you need to understand STC's limitations, which are so severe that the number is meaningless in the context of your project. And I agree -- keeping your questions in your main thread is probably best. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting answers that do not take the nuances of your project into account, and that can cause you trouble later. --Keith
Hey Packrat, been buried/under the weather for a while, missed most of your posts one way or another; please "bump" your main thread and let me know what you still need, hopefully I can do better this time... Steve
