Glenn,
In the latest drawing, would it be easier, and more affordable while still accomplishing the same isolation for the tracking room, if we put the 6ft Slider Door to the outside off of side D as in the drawing in my above post? Also then we could have the steps on that side as well which would be oput of the way of the entry door and rear windows (see below) :)
Then on the back of the house, instead of having a sliding door, we would have 3 side by side windows. This look would match the rest of the house design as to how the windows are.
Also, I am not sure if you jump over to the Construction Thread much, but as I just mentioned in there, I was not home when they finished laying the blocks for the footers on Sunday. Anyway, instead of laying the blocks to the Florida Room existing footer, to tie in, they went beside it and stopped 14ft away from the house.
Inspectors came out today and said it was not a problem that couldnt be fixed, but while here they said why dont I put the bathroom in the Garage instead of taking up space in the tracking room. I called the plumbers and they said it wouldnt be a problem as long as its done this week before the pad is poured. :D That will make for some more room in the tracking room, and also now I can add an ISO room and still have space in the room for a full band to rehearse.
Glenn, I want you to know that my wife and I truly appreciate all the hard work and drawings you have submitted. It has changed our floor plan 100% since its inception, and totally for the better. We owe most of that progression in the drawings to you and your creative ideas. Some say I thank people too much on here, but I cant help it. The creativity and input is so helpful.
I have taken the latest of your ideas, along with some of our latest ones, and posted a pic below. But in this picture, I do not have double wall room in room construction for the CR or the Loft.....only the tracking "live" room. Will that be ok?? :? The dimensions of the addition will be the same. I will be using 6ft sliders and 34" doors. I measured standard steps (to basement) and it measured 9ft long so I used that as a reference for the L stairs.
If it is, that would make the layout so much easier,,,and,,do-able for us, and hopefully we can get a final sketch done. You guys warned me this would take many months of ideas and changes. :D
Again, I apologize for all the tweaking and changing of the minds through this, but it just gets better and better with the ongoing input. I feel if you approve of this latest drawing, (which is similar to the last one I posted based off your suggestions) and you think it will work, I think we might have a plan to go with. Also if I relocate a couple years down the road (which will probably happen) then the conversion to a family/great room will be rather simple one to do.
Let me know what you think, and Have a Great Thanksgiving!!

I Need A Sketchup Artist In A Hurry. ;)

AJ - thanks for the compliments, I'm glad to assist.
you might check with your building department before putting the bath in the garage - in my town they wouldn't allow that without re-sizing the garage. i think the plans over doable but IMHO I would still pass on the loft only because I think it doesn't really add much space-value for the complexity of it and having the full floor plan open for a proper CR and live room (w/ iso booths) will be much more effective and possibly easier to construct.
I think you need isolation all around to be effective. one thought - instead of 2x6 walls use 2 2x4 walls built as an STC63 configuration. this way the walls are already built to isolate. then you need to consider the ceilings - this may need a similar construct to support enough sheetrock to actually isolate. Rod's book may help with this although I don't recall a vaulted ceiling example (except that major pro studio...).
enjoy your holiday!
Glenn (and others)
I didnt fall off the earth, quit or give up, I have been getting the area/pad ready for the pad. I posted the progress with pictures in the Construction Thread if you want to check them out. I figured better not post twice (cross thread) since thats frowned upon.
Also, the building inspector came otu and he suggested I DO move the bathroom into the Garage and I wouldnt have to extend anything which made it nice,,,,so that change has now also been made (we moved the plumbing).
Things are coming along, but soon it will be time to stop progress until the winter comes and goes  then pick it back up in the Spring.
Also, I think I FINALLY have a drawing (thanks to all your input) that I might be sticking with and what might actually be the Studio.
Again its in SmartDraw since I cant do Sketchup very well.
Here it is and let me know what you think.
Thanks as always
AJ
looks good! hopefully you can get the pad poured before it gets too cold...
I would flip the door from the sound lock to the live room, so that the door opens into the live room. That sound lock area is going to be pretty tight as it is. You've got oodles of space in the live room for an inward opening door there.
Also, consider making that bathroom a little bigger, eating more space in the garage, so that you can have a stall shower in there! 8) We drummers get awfully sweaty. Plus, if you're "muddy," you can clean yourself off really well! ;-) Might be nice if you ever decide to have a pool in your backyard too...
Also, I'm a little lost on the plan for the loft... I see one-dimensional floorplans without a loft (although I see stairs), and I see two-dimensional drawings with a loft. What's the purpose of the loft again? :?
--Keith
The 22ft X 42ft Pool is already there. :D Its located rigth outside of the Studio. So maybe if someone gets too sweaty or dirty, I can just throw them in the Pool. lol   I like the idea of shower capability if this was more then a project/home studio. All I really plan to do with it is probably play around with my own stuff in it, and also do some local band demo's etc, and I might do full CD's for local area bands (I am finishing up a 13 song contemporary Christian CD for a church friend as we speak) but I dont think I will get into having any real heavy hitters in the place recording. This is just more-less a very expensive hobbie for me at this point. :D If that changes, then we will go from there.
As far as this Loft,,,,The Loft will be just basically a place to hang out (like a lounge) for the most part, and I will also have a Pro Tools Rig with computer set up there. (Sorta be able to use it as an editing suite,,,and also the kids want to maybe be able to podcast out of it)
As it stands now, I track at my Studio (at another location) then I bring the hard drives home from my HD24 and download the tracks here into Pro Tools and mix them. My original intent for the loft was to keep that same concept, except of course everything would now be in the same building and at the same location. I was thinking with the computer upstairs, that would make for more room in the downstairs control room too.
So,,with that said, also it has been suggested that the loft be used as a hang out area for band members, and also possibly an Isolation area if needed, or just a place for me to get away and also observe while others may be using the studio. This Loft ISNT mandatory, but I just thought it would be sorta cool, and the wife wanted one.(thinking for down the road)
The loft will be the same dimensions as the control room, and above the control room, and it will have about 8ft ceilings at the peak. Also it will have a double window looking down into the tracking room. Also it will have windows to the outside world on the sides.
This Loft will be the same as the control room also as for being totally decoupled from the tracking room where i will have the double wall construction, and green glue and double OBS and double Dryall etc etc.
Does this put it any better perspective as far as this loft idea??
Actually,,,maybe I should be calling this area simply a 2nd floor over the control room. I guess its not actually a "loft".
Man if I could only do Sketchup drawing of the last drawing/idea I posted above, I could show you better. Sketchup just beats me up!! Look at Glenns Sketchup drawings in recent posts here. They are very close (except a few windows and the slider door and steps were moved).
Keith,,,remember about 8 months ago when I posted my first drawing/idea for this studio project?? Man how things have changed (and improved)!!   You said it would be about a 12+ stage process in the planning alone, I think I am seeing the upper numbers finally! :D I have to be at stage 200 by now!!
Thanks all for your help and Glenn, if i could get a final sketchup of the above drawing (which your last one is already pretty close) I'll owe you several cases of your favorite "Barley Pop".
Thanks again,
AJ
PS - And yes I will definetly have the tracking room door swing inward instead of into the sound lock area. Thanks for the advice! ;)
I undersand, AJ -- maybe a shower isn't in your immediate needs. However, if you intend to use that area behind the toilet as a storage area, then maybe you can frame the bathroom larger and run plumbing to a "closet" that you can put a shower in later on. You can use it for storage purposes in the meantime.
And with that said, I'll stop harping about the non-existant shower. ;-)
You'll be so glad you did all this planning before building. (Well, you're still "building" a foundation and slab, but we already know why!)

Hi AJ - I'm out in Toronto this week but I'll try to get something posted back by this weekend...
Glenn, That would be awsome. Thanks much!! I think the floorplan I am trying to go with is the one in the post above called "New idea 1st Floor Plan w key" I now have the slider on the side D of the Studio going out onto a patio, and 3 windows on Side C where the slider used to be. As you can see, I also went with the flipped design having the 2nd floor area (loft) to the back of the studio instead of at the front and the steps to the 2nd floor on the wall right when you walk through the sliding door.
I think doing it this way is going to open up the place more with those couple windows and doors in the control room, loft area. (the Tracking room wont have any windows in it and just a double door from control room, and a sealed door from the sound lock area.
Also, as you can see I added a mudroom area in the garage and now have the bathroom located in there so its out of the way. I plan to have this mudroom area built next week and done with since its a smaller project.
Thanks again as always
AJ
here's something that seems pretty close. the slider on the side creeps over the staircase so maybe consider a single door with a window in it and a separate window since the slider is partially covered anyways. it will seal better (cold and water) and maybe more sound proof as well while still letting in the light...
expanded the airlock a bit to allow the doors to swing and included Sharward's idea on having the interior door swing into the live area. with the slightly larger size you also gain a iso booth of sorts - put a glass door on it...
pm me for the sketchup file since it's about 650K zipped...
PM sent. Thanks again Glenn,
