hey guys, need sum advice. i just got this design done for my studio. i have build a previous one before and lets just say it was a nightmare with sound issues. do you think the vocal booth needs more angled walls and how should i do the ceiling in the control room and the record booth. any advice would be most welcomed cheers j.

hey guys we started construction on our new studio in sydney today. we are doing the floor first, we also found a great supplier for rubber insulation that goes on before we lay the boards. what do people think of the room design?

sorry mate - but that's not a design - that's a scribble on a piece of paper. I'm amazed you'd be going ahead and possibly spending heaps of money on a project so badly planned. good luck  cheers john
hey john thanks for the feedback we have had the plans drawn out properly that was only a sketch and the builders have done a few studios in the past. We only have 2.5m from floated floor to original roof. What do you recommend we should do for the control room and recording room ceiling? Flat or angled ? Cheers C.
hey guys here are the day 2 pics from the studio construction. we layed the rockwool in the floor, put rubber on the joices and glued the floorboards down so there is no transfer of sound. we also seperating the floor between the control room and the vocal booth. j.

Hai Jamie, Construction photo's look good. It's always great to have progress. Congrats on your studio-in-the-making. However, there's doubt here about your "design" since it's indeed just a scribble on a piece of paper. You might wanna tell/include us (on) your detailed plan. It look's like you stop whatever yer doing and post your "plans" here in detail. That is if ye want to have the job done properly. Please fill in the blanks in your profile (where ye from etc) and read them stickies. Otherwise, good luck with your studio. ro
Jamie, Also be aware that when floating a floor chances are you would be better off not floating as far as isolation is concerned. The math to get the weights correct is difficult, everything to do with weight has to be preplanned. Many have floated when they should not have. Do a search for floating floor on this forum. Floating a floor to level out floor is an option, it's been done, but iso is still most likely going to be less.
and the builders have done a few studios in the past.
That does not mean much  A few concepts have changed (floating floor one of them). My experience on this forum and especially in my local community of music biz folks is that unless you're source for "how to" is well studied, (maybe read Rod's Book) then chances are high that minor and major mistakes will be made. As far as sound/studio rooms go, even "pros" with good intentions  seem to blow an awful lot of smoke, relying on false, old or myth like information. Marc
here are the final plans for the studio J.

hey guitardad yeah we had to float the floor as the floor was angled 60mm out from left to right and we need it to be even. and there is also a noisy carpark underneath our studios. we built the first studio 3 months ago across the hall and this eliminated the noise and worked perfectly. cheers j.
Hey Jamie, Just looked at your pdf of studio plan. I am positive there is a thread in the design forum, with designs from John that are really close to what you are doing. CR A & B with live room in middle and a hallway behind all three. I remember a couple designs in the thread, work in progress type, moving the doors around and so forth. It'll take some hunting to find it, I couldn't find it quickly, plus my internet connection is currently inconsistent (man I got to fix it :x ) Marc
hey guys we are up to day 4 of the studio build the frames for the walls went up today 45 degree angles in the corners and angled calls all around cheers j.

things are really starting to shape up the frames for the walls are dow. we start the ceiling tom and then we are rockwooling all the walls and ceiling, before we giprock it

Don't panel those 45 degree corners, if those walls are part of your isolation shell you need to frame them square. If they are NOT part of a sealed isolation shell you should just fill those corners with 3 PCF (48 Kg/m63) mineral wool and cover with cloth. Corners are your best place for broadband trapping to smooth out room modes, don't box 'em in or you'll have a hard time making the room sound decent... Steve
thanks steve yeah that is what we are doing. we are doing square corners in the control room and adding the 45 degree angle with rigid fibreglass and cloth once the giprock is up. what cloth do you recommend?? the recording room has the angles and will be treated once the giprock is up.
hey guys the builder finished the ceiling framework today. rockwool is next then sheeting j.

what cloth do you recommend??
Guilford of Maine FR701, muslin, burlap & fleece are some of the not many options. Fabric needs to be fire resistant when not installed directly against a wall like certains are BUT are acoustically transparent, sound passes right through. Construction looks good... hard to tell where you're going from limited plan you've posted, not matter. Keep posting, we love the pics. Marc
does any one know where to get this material in sydney? cheers j.
John's yer man for down under - try PM'ing him with this, I know he's got sources... Steve
hey guys just finishing the rockwool in the ceiling of control room also starting to sheet cheers j.

I dunno... ...I'm seeing a lot of construction happening, including an entire floating studio, a non-parallel control room, on a non-ground floor, with no assurance of structural integrity (i.e., will the existing floor support all the weight you are adding?), with very high level basic drawings...? The framing quality looks good, but I'm worried. :? Sorry I didn't say anything sooner -- the title of the thread led me to believe it was all about design, so I hadn't poked my head in here until now. --Keith
hey keith thanks for the comment. what do you mean the weight?. we had a structural engineer come thru and measure all this out. its only a 2 storey building with concrete fllors and brick walls. J.
