Hi All, The design of my (hopefully soon) to build studio is entering the details. I think I have the larger parts of the isolation concepts clear, but am still a little puzzled with the potential leakage form HVAC ducts entering and exeting the rooms. I got Rod's book two weeks ago and it is a very well written, informative book, but unfortunately this part is missing... So, I have my proper mass-air-mass system with double stud walls with a pretty nice hole cut out for the ducts to enter  . What is the typical way to keep transmission loss to a minimum at these places? Thanks, Dirk
Dirk, we're ya from? (iow, fill in the blanks in yer profile)

Headed off to the salt mines, anything here that helps? http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... tter#30211 Steve
Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Actually, that is exactly what I did for my current room, but I thought there would be a "professional" way of doing it 8) . Thanks again. Greetings, Dirk
You might get better "local" advice on this from Eric Desart; same country, VAST experience with this sort of thing. If he doesn't chime in on this, you could try PM'ing him, not sure if he's got "notification" enabled or not... Steve
Belgium and The Netherlands are not the same thing Steve
Well, at least they share a border...
Man, you're right; I'd thought the "crazy belgian" thing was just Bert giving Eric his ration of crap; sorry, Eric  But hey, all those tiny Euro countries are smaller than some of our states, so they're probably STILL closer to each other than I am to my bud in Colorado :?

:) Yes but with twice the population. And the +/- Capital of Europe ..... But the Netherlands and the Flemish part of Belgium are rather close, having a common language. And economically we don't have real borders anymore. We just drive from into another country without seeing a border, customs or police. The only other part in the world speaking, a by history grown apart version of Dutch is South Africa. (South Africans and Dutch people can easily communicate with one another). Antwerp, my home city is invaded during weekends and on markets by guys from the Netherlands.
Indeed. My wife and I have a friend right there in Antwerp -- sounds like a really neat place. 8) (Sorry about the diversion, Dirk!) --Keith
Not a problem! 8) I live about 1 hrs drive from Antwerpen and by the time I really get to build my studio building (hopefully starting next year!) I will definitely see if Eric is up for some consultancy hours. And one reason of course why all the Dutchies go to Antwerpen is to drink all those lovely Belgium beers  . With the hot weather we are currently enjoying here, a nice cold Hoegaarden is just what the doctor ordered 8) . I have been studying anything I can find on studio building and acoustics for the last 5 years and currently I am designing some potential plans in 3D. I have most figured out (except everything I don't no the existence of  ) apart form some isolation details, HVAC dimenioning and still figuring out some wiring details and the console to put in... Attached is a 2D plan of what I hope to be building. Anybody some more ideas on how to isolate air in- and outtakes? Greetings, Dirk P.S. Eric, I visited Galaxy studios last fall, what a great and amazing place!

Huge investments are planned now, and possibilities studied in function of building permits. Several rooms, an additional mastering (for a new patented audio format) and a 7 m heigh movie theater will be added. AMS-Neve designed a brandnew console already (the 88D) extended for this coming format (still in the process of adjusting/design/improving).
Sounds very interesting, Eric; but I was kinda hoping you could weigh in on the first question in this thread, I wasn't much help... Steve
Steve, I know. I had a verbal and in writting confirmed agreement with Paul that he should keep his ventilation from the net. I did for Paul for thousands of dollars worth of free work even before his diary started. I thought I did this for a friend, in order to help him realize his dream. The only and single condition was that he should keep the ventilation of his studio from the net. He didn't consult me, I told him how to do it and I checked every individual related drawing from/for him. We had private phone conversations about his ventilation design, since via those numerous emails it became to deficult/time consuming for me to explain, and so on. I made myself angry before in private with Paul. He reconfirmed the existence of our conditional agreement. He told he would comply with our agreement and appologized with the argument style that "he got carried away again". His urge to be the super guy is larger than a simple agreement and a man's word. Even after that, when he didn't need me anymore, and playing the expert with his super studio was more rewarding, he couldn't stop and went in more detail. I do reserve all my related rights versus Paul in function of his related actions. And that does not include only his personal project, but all subsequent projects based on info resulting from those actions. The principly calculations for his studio in function of environmental sound radiation and the resulting necessary insulation were done even before that by everybody known diary started. I'm not going to discuss in public, what Paul brought illegally and against our agreement and my trust in him on the net. I can prove any single word of this. Paul is not the intellectual owner of his ventilation principles/design and related silencing (which are inherent related). I am. And the calculations involved go much further than standard calculations for ventilation systems. I'm really sorry about this.
Fair enough, I can relate to that completely (during my day job I manage 50 designers and engineers in one of the largest R&D sites in the Netherlands). In this time of every information flying all over the place, it's especially important that people respect I.P.. When the time arrives to really get into that kind of details, I will post what I came up with (what is basically what I came up with for my current studio and works pretty well) and see if there is any feedback. Greetings, Dirk
