i was at lowes and home depot and they have some acoustic ceiling tiles available that are semi-rigid and backed with something that at least looks similar to OC 703. It's about 3/4" in thickness. These are the same tiles that are used in a drop ceiling. My question is ... would these work in trapping frequencies - especially bass frequencies using the frame method as described in the sticky **here**
No. "Acoustic" ceiling tiles are made more for office buildings. They diffuse sound more than a flat panel, and they stop some sound, but not a whole lot. But I wouldn't depend on them and them alone in a studio for your bass trapping or sound proofing.
okay thanks very much for your reply! any ideas on how to get some material like what i'm looking for in South Florida?
Rock, > would these work in trapping frequencies - especially bass frequencies using the frame method < Yes, those will work fine. But you need enough of them to get a sandwich at least three inches thick, and you should also peel off the plastic facings on all the panels except the one facing the room. --Ethan
really? awesome! hmmm. two differing opinions. i'll go with the one i like which is YES!
Well I personally wouldn't do it, and I think it's a bit of a hack job. Why not just do it the way that's TESTED to work properly? There's no need to reinvent the wheel. Whatever man :) do whatever you'd like.
why do it? simply cuz it's quicker and easier. and i can't find any rockwool or the like down here.
Oh, well you didn't say that. that changes things a little. Thankfully I live in a metropolitan area where we have just about everything you'd ever need.
actually, i live in a huge metro area. (miami, et al). but i just can't find anyplace. dont even know where to begin actually. the yahoo yellowpages was no help. how did you find yours?
Call them? :D Ask someone? Stop one of the guys who works in the store and say "Hey, I'm looking for Owens Corning 703 panels or a comparable compressed filberglass substitute". :) Here's a hint, if they have a blank look on their face, ask someone else. haha
