Just bought a house and set up a studio in a 10.5' x 11' room w/ 10.5' ceilings. Almost a cube. It sounded terrible at first and I put an Auralex Romminator Project 2 kit in there and it solved a lot of the slap back problems i was having. However I am still not getting as much bass as my last studio which was roughly 13' x 18' with 8' ceilings. I am using Genelc 8040A's and they kicked ass in my last studio. I am toying with 3 options: 1. buying a new Genelec sub. And if so should i go with the 7050B or the 7060A? 2. building a dropped ceiling home depot style 3. bigger near fields?
I agree that experimenting with speaker placement can help. But, you also need some serious bass absorption in a room that size, esp since it is almost a cube, to absorb some of those bass reflections and even things out. I certainly would not add a sub, since you know from experience that your speakers can produce plenty of bass under more optimal conditions. Do your best to fix the room sound.
I have a similarly small room like yours, and had terrible bass problems until I got serious about adding some bass treatment, and getting the speakers out of nulls. For monitors I have a genelec 1029/1091 system and KRK rokit 8s. Both produce plently of bass in the room (I had to back the 1091 sub way off after treatment) I'm only about 70% of the way done with treatment, but the bass now rocks in the room. Here is info on what I did in my room: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5895
jwl - agree 100% - note that I said to try that "first" - by NOT having treatment in the room, peaks/nulls are more obvious and easier to get positioning right. THEN comes treatment to finish the job... Steve
