Hi Guys, I need some help. I´m gonna start building my studio in a few weeks. I already have tried to use some bass trap but no success. There´s always some resonance when somebody rings a low A note in a eletric bass. We have built the studio in an old rented house and we blocked the windows with bricks and cement, so we can just go back to original if we need to. The control room is very small and we used one window as a frame to put the air conditioning. There is also a wood closet and i dont know what to do with it. Can i use it as a bass trap? Also we have to save some space in it cause sometimes we will have the whole band inside mixing. We are a rock band and will use the studio in a non comercial basis only to record and mix our songs. We use Roland Near field Powered monitors. PS: we have very short money, and plan to do ourselves all the job. can you help us?

Great Ideia! hadn´t tought about that! Do i use hangers inside the closet or only insulation? About walls, do i put foam or something or just leave as it is ? And i forgot to mention: the window in front of where you put the soundboard is a old wood and glass window and we blocked from outside with bricks and cement, so we actually have the window inside the room and can close it or levave it opened. Do we use that as bass trap too? Thank you John.
Hi Paula Have you read the postings about walls? http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4310 There are excelent clues there! It is important to know about your neighborhood, in order to verify the need for Isolation treatment, But take care on the usage of foam, very common in Brasil, although it may be a good High freq. absorbers. Don't forget the mid lows and lows. You could consider an acoustic treatment along with isolation if needed. Abraço

I´m not really worried about neighbors... All i want is to do some acoustic treatment in our mix room so we would have a flat sound as possible. Right now we have a really annoying resonance on the mid-lows and a lotta reflection. And no, we wont fill it up with foam. :) Abraços.. Do you guys know where i can find plans for ceiling clouds ? :?:
Great link Paulo! Thanks. The thing is: our room is like a cube, so there´s a specific resonance at 440hz A note and lower harmonics. I wanna know what kind of insulation to put inside the closet to work in this specific range and what to do about the ceiling and side walls. And what about the High Frequencies? Got any clue? Cheers.
Hey Paula,
our room is like a cube, so there´s a specific resonance at 440hz A note and lower harmonics.
Those panels (dbyboth's) on the corners will actually work well not only at that freq, what is so good.

You could use Rockwool inside the closet 50 to 100 mm, layers on layers: Did u read about bass traps at SAE site? so the explanation is at there :!: http://www.rockfibras.com/catprods.htm It is easier to work with rockwool, and u could use also"lã de vidro" 50 - 100mm layered on rockwool for high frequencies: U mentioned the window that u closed off on John's layout, it would fit also there. http://www.isover.com.br/isover/por_lin ... llfeltapli
and what to do about the ceiling and side walls.
Did you see that those panels have a design for wall usage? About ceiling, what is the high :?:
I didn't understand the depth and length of the closet, nor its high. And where goes the hall in front both doors outside the rooms, because u say "a closet in my way" Some sugestions added to my last post. see u :!:

Hi Paulo, Great plans !!! My ceiling is 3m High. What is the best option? Sonex? Clouds (if so are there plans available?) There´s also this glass n wood window right if front of where john put the soundboard. What should i do with it? Thanks.
Hi Paula
There´s also this glass n wood window right if front of where john put the soundboard. What should i do with it?
You wrote before that the outside of the window was closed off with cement, ok! INside you should use 1 layer 50mm of rockwool and another 50mm one of glasswool like a sandwich, then you cover it with some fabric. It's always important to cloth the glasswool with fabric when it is faced on.

John has a classic design for ceilings, I'm posting it, although I think you've already known. If Iwere you I'd use rockwool, nor sonex(for the price). You could also decline the ceiling, say 2,80 on the front wall to 2,10 on the rear wall, with hanger bass traps, like in the pics, or not. Great :!:

Aloha, Just curious...from looking at your photos...which way does your ceiling slope? Aloha 8)
Actually it doesn´t. That you see on the picture is a bass trap we tried to put on it. It didin´t work at all. Everything played in A makes the room shake. It was nailed in double glass window ´s opposite side.
Waw Paula :!: Really beatifull place. Now a got a better sense of your drawings. So you've just done the ceiling corners, the browns in the fotos. Great. I'll send u some good ideas see u :!:
Yes those are ceiling corner traps. Shame they didin´t work. I´ll very much welcome your ideas, we are just about to start it. Thanks.
Shame they didin´t work.
Dependind on what it is made of, it actualy wont work :!: What did you made them of :?: To be effective you must understand what is happenig on the waves propagation inside your room. As I saw in the pics you do have a lot of corners. Please, treat the corners. Two meeting walls = a boost problem on mid low/low freq. Three walls meeting yields a doble boost from the former, and so on. If you have treated one corner on ceiling using, say panel: Good, surely there's an improvement, though it may not be effective as you desired. So, work on vertical walls as I send you a pic, those places are really important for the monitors placement. Apply panels to each corner on ceilings. If 440Hz still bores you, try a slot resonator, you can build them to work around that specific mid-low range. By the way, you should use rockwool on the glass around the A/C Unit, especially beause it is a place where parallel wall will cause to you early reflections. I'm preparing a drawing that I think will help you. GO ON! See u ... :!:
And so! How about the work: is it going ok?
:D Hey, Some easy ideas to treating the corners: 1st  A top view 2nd  An X-Ray 3rd  Sight from bottom 4th  A front view X-Ray As it's shown, panels are set on each corner in order to "break" the 90° angles. Happy New Year :!:
