I have read numerous post regarding 2x6 staggered stud construction and fitting a double door into the opening. Couldn't you use a 2x8 for your walls and a 2x6 for your ceiling, you would have ample room for a double door, without having to rip down 2x4's to make it work. I am building a rather small room .....inside dimensions.....8' x 9'.....due to my garage layout. water heater and sub panel are in the way of making it bigger. Also what are your thoughts regarding Owens Corning QuietZone bats? larlev

I think if you can afford the square footage of 2x8s as sole and top plates (actual size 7 1/2"), it would make more sense to do double wall construction with 2x4s (actual size 3 1/2") with a little space between the frames. Keep in mind that staggered stud construction is a compromise -- not nearly as good as double frame, but much better than single frame. Once you're at a certain "footprint," you run out of reasons not to do actual double frame.
I guess your right....... 1/4" isn't much difference...but you will get better isolation from 2 walls...
Yes and there are many many references to using a double wall construction for isolation purposes here just got to do a lil searchin. Aint got the time to pin point them, got to head to bed thy worketh calleth WAY to early in the mornin
OK I have read and read...... I plan on using double wall construction....2x6 staggered stud ceiling...heavy carpet under base plates, whatever insulation is best....2 layers 5/8" gypsum on both sides and 2 on ceiling. I can only build the inside dimensions to about 8'x10' with a ceiling height of 6'8" to 7' if I am lucky. I no this will be small but that's it. I really don't want to remove any material existing on walls and ceiling. I am running HVAC from house.....branching off main supply air..... All I want to do is play late at nights and not disturb the neighbors while they are in their homes. Will this be enough for what I want.... I understand you guys are putting a lot more thought and work in this than I am, and I apologize for asking such a kindergarten type question....but I just don't need something as elaborate as ones found on this site. Thanks, larlev

Good.
2x6 staggered stud ceiling...
Do you mean staggered joist ceiling -- the technique of allowing the tops of your inner leaf joists to tuck between the outer leaf joists? :?
heavy carpet under base plates
Huh? Where did you get that idea? Is this your attempt to decouple the walls from the floor? :?
whatever insulation is best....
Why not fill the cavities with Thermafiber Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets (SAFB) - Nominal Density (2.5 pcf) or Roxul Acoustical Fire Batt (AFB) - ≥2" (2.5 pcf)? This stuff will probably satisfy your local building department's requirements for a firebreak in the void between the walls without having to permanently couple them together with lumber. That's what I plan to do on my project. 8)
2 layers 5/8" gypsum on both sides and 2 on ceiling.
2 on each leaf of your ceiling? Or 2 on a single leaf ceiling? If a single leaf ceiling, your ceiling will be your weak point, will not compete with your walls, and that would be very bad.
I can only build the inside dimensions to about 8'x10' with a ceiling height of 6'8" to 7' if I am lucky. I no this will be small but that's it.
I'm pretty sure that will not meet code. Most doors are 6'8" -- imagine a ceiling no higher than a standard door. Not good. Not good at all. That doesn't even count your acoustic treatments. Not good.
I really don't want to remove any material existing on walls and ceiling.
That could be a huge problem. You may end up having a 3-leaf wall, which will be crap for isolation on the low end. I have just reread all (at this point 5) of your posts on this forum, and none of them actually cover the level of detail that is called for in the "Before You Post" announcement. It really would be best for you to read that announcement again (several times if need be -- sometimes that's what it takes) and then post back with answers to all of the questions raised there. Otherwise, we're giving you feedback on very incomplete data and the results could be (at best) disappointing or (at worst) downright dangerous. (cont'd. next post)
I am running HVAC from house.....branching off main supply air.....
What about return air? Is the the existing HVAC system large enough to serve the space? Is the space currently conditioned (i.e., served by the system)? What about ventilation (not to be confused with air conditioning -- see the most recent posts on my project thread for some insights into this. (This is an area that I am still learning about.)
All I want to do is play late at nights and not disturb the neighbors while they are in their homes.
Play what? :? Are you a drummer or a guitarist or a pianist or a flutist or a trombonist or a harmonicaist or a banjoist or a zylophonist or a . . . See? We're trying to solve an algabraic equation with too many variables. :?
Will this be enough for what I want....
I have no idea. It depends on so many things. :? All we can do so far is tell you whether or not what you're doing is a complete waste of time/money/materials for any purpose.
I understand you guys are putting a lot more thought and work in this than I am, and I apologize for asking such a kindergarten type question....but I just don't need something as elaborate as ones found on this site.
You haven't elaborated enough about your needs/wants/goals/desires or existing construction for us to help you much further, unless you post back with all of the information requested by the moderator. If soundproofing were easy (it isn't), nobody would need any help achieving it. ;) --Keith
Forget it....I'm done......I am hiring a contractor...... as far as the HVAC...I am a HVAC/R Tech so I had that part solved a long time ago... I'll take my chances on my ideas....you guys are way to serious for what I am after....and as far as the pre-post guidelines..... I am pretty sure I am asking a damn simple question...."Will it work or not?"....that's all the answer I need.... larlev

Dude, I've been asking myself that question regarding my own project for months. Sorry we're too "serious" for you and your project. (I don't mean that as an insult -- I mean that literally and with respect.) Good luck.
Bump...wondered how his build went?
What a depressing thread... :(

It amazes me how some people can be so dense........ This is like saying: "I have a pile of money - it's 1' wide - 1' high and 1' long - is it enough cash to buy a new Ford GT 40? I don't really want to finance - so what do you people think?" And then - when you come back and ask him what denomination the money is - he says: "Hey..... I just asked you a simple enough question - why can't you just answer me with out all this other bulls**t?" He wouldn't give anyone a clue as to instrument - sound levels or any other bullshit - and then he belittles the people here for trying to really help him........... what a moron.......... Rod
what a moron..........
 Even engineers loose it on threads like this, huh Rod? :P I don't feel bad anymore. Thanks. fitZ
Maybe that guy wasn't the way you guys want him to be, but he came here for help. Sure he may seems " flying in a blue dream" . But i think it's just sad. That would have never happen with Knightfly around, at least not this way. If some people here are just tired of answering the same questions over and over again, because newcommers don't read the guidelines (and that won't change ! ), it's just the way things are. Then please just don't answer. There are no "jerks" on this forum "pros", "newbies" or not. my 2Cents
With all due respect, the gentleman was asked repeatedly for enough information to supply him with answers to his questions. Not only did he refuse, he became indiginant. If he thinks this response was bad, wait till he gives a contractor the same sort of information. He'll get laughed at if not a complete foul up for a studio. No apology here. As to Knghtfly, he's more of a gentleman than I, but hes not here. And this is a forum where pros will answer with respect if GIVEN it. So, let him GET a contractor. Good lucik larlev. However, wait till the contractor asks just HOW he is supposed to get a permit with so little information. Ha! fitZ

Eric, With all due respect, I don't agree with you. The very first thing Steve would have told this gent would be that he had to obey the rules - and would have pointed him to the stickies. Next he would have asked him to provide the "more detail" that the stickies refer to in his post - because no one can answer the question the poster asked without that........ it's impossible. Next- I don't recall that anyone said a single disparaging response in regards to this person untilthe point in time where He/She blewup and lambasted the posters who were honestly trying to help - and at that point (IMHO anyway) the person acted like a jerk - and deserved to have this pointed out to him/her. Sincerely, Rod
I for one agree with Rod :D . If this dude cant answer the questions how in the hell can he expect a helpful responce :?: No one was out of line but him.

For the record... Steve (a.k.a. "Knightfly") is still around, as far as I know... Just not as often nowadays due to the many things in his life that are keeping him very busy. :) --Keith
I might be out of line here....and certainly not qualified,,,but I will chime in anyways (plus I need to vent). I am still a newbie to this whole building of a Studio concept,,,and I agree that no question is a dumb question (and I sure ask enough of them). But when the people on here try to assist you (especially for free) with your questions, you need to follow their simple requests and rules as they have outlined. I know...I also was directed to check out a few stickies and also the famous suggestion which is to do a SEARCH before you ask  throughout my posts. I dont always do that search thing because quite honestly its much easier to ask sometimes, and just hope someone answers quick....but I can see if the same questions are asked over and over, it could come to be a real pain in the ass. As for this post, it looks as though the original poster asked for advice, suggestions and/or answers to questions on a site that has some real professionals on it answering,,,So of course those "professionals" are going to want to know details to best answer those questions being asked. My opinion is, if someone dosent have the time or consideration to accept those suggestions or answers with a simple Thank You, but instead get their dick in a knot, then the best of luck to them with how their studio turns out. If this site is "too serious" for ones taste, then maybe they should just hack a studio together as they feel will work best for them, and then be happy with their outcome,,,no matter what it is  I guess the moral of the story here is,,,,if you do as asked, and simply at least try to play by the rules,,,,you'll receive plenty of great advice and direction from those who have "been there,,,done that!". I have learned and gained so much on this site, and from several people with experience on here,,and it didnt cost me a thing (well I made a Donation which everyone might want to do) This site is a wealth of knowledge and information with many very qualified people on it. I know I appreciate all the advice, help and support, and I cant wait till I can post pictures of the results next Spring when my studio is completed! Thanks as always, AJ (Sorry if I am coming across like a pompass @ss tonight with this response, but today I just buried a brother firefighter who died at the young age of 51,,,then about 3 hours ago, I got a call that my Nephew's tank was hit in Iraq today. He and his fellow soldiers were hurt very bad and some are in "touch and go" condition. I open a beer, and come on here to try to unwind, and see this pissin match. I just wonder what the priorities are of some people in this world with their attitudes and egos, and have to think about things, as simple as the people trying to help on this site, that are sometimes just taken for granted! ) Lifes too short people!!!

Man, sorry to hear that. AND you're right, life is to short, we should enjoy it. I have to remind myself (a lot) to enjoy the journey and stop my grumbling on a daily basis. The hardest part is not letting other people who I perceive have lower expectations of themselves then I have of myself, bother me. AS for this thread... this would be the reason I have my signature. Hope it doesn't offend anybody, I hope it's kind of funny and a reminder for us (including myself) to spend some time researching before we ask a question. Marc
