i think it is a matter of isolation... the more you have the more you'll notice the entire spectrum coming through. for example, play just bass in the other room and let me know if you can hear it... i think you find you can quite easily if there isn't a bunch of high frequency stuff masking it...
thanks Dan, i have seen this before. its interesting because its not that there is no reduced low frequency TL, its "minimal" compared to higher frequencies, which imho i believe someone would ignore it at their peril... even a 4-5db dip in TL is significant at higher levels of isolation... which i also think was Eric's point in that thread, all though may be he'll weigh in and correct me...
Well I haven't even finished caulking and mudding the second layer of 5/8 on my inner leaf. Actually I don't even have the door seals done! I only have the seal on the door side opposite the hinges, on the rest of both doors I have gaps that show light through. I mean, light goes through the cracks in both doors to the inside of my room. But I'm happy to say that I've done a test with a kick drum and a snare, and isolation to the outside of the garage, and the inside of the house, is outstanding. If you are standing within 5-6 feet of the outside of the garage, and really concentrating and trying to hear, you can *kind of* hear something. But once you are more than 5 feet away you can't hear anything. Of course, I'm not trying to isolate from a quiet control room, I'm trying to isolate from a fairly high ambient noise environment in my neighborhood. If you are in the kitchen which is kitty-corner from the studio (the corner of the kitchen is the same point as the corner of my outer leaf) you can't hear anything either. So anyway, I am glad to report pleasant surprise and just how well this little mass-air-mass trick works. It's a bit of a leap of faith isn't it? By the way, I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I ended up leaving a 12 inch airgap, and filled entirely with insulation. Still to come: I haven't yet cut the holes in my inner leaf that would allow my ventilation system to be completed. So we will soon find out how that affects the isolation. However, if the effect of no door seals is any guide, my ventilation shouldn't hopefully leak too much sound either.
It's good to read from you. Thanks for the great update! Andre
