I'm looking for what types of Caulk and Fiberglass Insulation others have used on their studios.
Mainly stuff that is inexpensive and can be bought in North America
(anyone from the east coast would be very helpful).
Where you bought it (exp:Lowes, Home Depot, etc...), how much it was, and the name of the manufacturer
would be great if anyone could be of help.
Thanks
Caulk and Insulation

Caulk...you want to use Acoustical Sealant such as Boss, Grabber, Tite Bond, etc. just to name a few.
Insulation...Owens Corning 703, or use mineral or rock wool such as Roxul.
Where can you buy it? Find out who supplies building materials in your local area to contractors. This is where you will usually find most of these materials. They're used in commercial applications/construction quite a bit.
Aaron
I couldn't find a link for Boss.

So Aaron, which brand do you recommend most?
The 3 I mentioned above, I've used. Basically I used what they had in stock at the time. When I first bought some, I bought the Boss, but was paying $5 a tube for it. When I went over to another supplier where I buy my Roxul, they carried the Grabber & Titebond. I paid only $3.25 a tube when I bought a case of 12 tubes. Some of these also carry a fire rating, so depending on local codes (if your building a commercial room), may depend on what you have to use.
They're for the most part, pretty much the same thing. The Boss seemed to dry up and shrink a little bit, so I had to go back around and fill in some spots. I didn't have that much of a problem w/ the Grabber or Titebond, but I've used only a couple tubes of the Titebond so far. It's all easy cleanup though. No oily silicone stuff.
Aaron
cfuehrer: Thanks for the Boss link. I'll add it to my list.
Z, when you add it be sure to keep Aaron's comments about the shrinkage; this stuff might not be "ready for prime time" if it's gonna do that... Steve
thanks for the reply guys.
I'll check all of this out.
Aaron as far as the mineral or rock wool... Would you need any
protective clothing to install this stuff?
I've read the stuff can be pretty harmful.
Also is there any other recommended fiberglass besides 703.
Thanks,
Brock
knightfly: Aaron's comments have been recorded.
guitarguy: Were there not enough alternatives listed at
http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm
I have another bunch from NewZeland if you need them.
Z, with the exception of the Boss stuff, it sounds like any of the acoustic sealants would work fine and not cause problems later - that's supposed to be one of the criteria, since there is quite a bit of construction that can NOT be accessed once completed. There do seem to be some differences in usable temperature ranges that may narrow down choices a bit - for example, the OSI stuff seems to have a wider temp range than the USG - here's the link to their spec sheet
http://www.osiliterature.com/IMAGE/PDF/sO11175.PDF
Also, if you read through the great bunch of links you've assembled you'll note that some products say they are for UN-exposed use, others say for either unexposed or exposed. I'm not positive, but I think this may be relative to whether or not the product forms a "skin" -
also note in some of the literature that it makes a HUGE difference whether you use a single or double bead; I saw one instance where they spec a 10 dB difference between the two.
This just backs up all our statements about caulking heavy.
From all this, my first choice would be the OSI, partly because of the wider temperature range - followed by any of the others, except the Boss - if even ONE person has problems with it, it's off MY list... Steve
Guitarguy - please read ALL the sticky posts; there are a lot of answers there, including yours, in this one -
http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1742
I'm not trying to be difficult, it's just that everyone here contributes their time for FREE - the stickys are there to help reduce repetition so we can spend more time answering NEW or unusual questions.
In fact, you started a thread here which is about to become a "sticky" itself because of its relevance - thanks, and welcome to the board... Steve
Boss - Disavowed by Knightfly
Based only on Aaron's experience with it, which I feel is reason enough NOT to want to put it where you can't get at it without destruction - caulking does NOT come under my "wanna do again and again" list
Thanks for the help on this issue.
z60611- don't know how I missed the link for the insulation, thanks for redirecting me.
My eyes fail me from time to time. 8)
Steve- thanks for your time, I've gone through most of the sticky's, I just have trouble remebering where
I found the information sometimes, when I need it.
My database of links I've assembled isn't detailed enough(I had no idea it would be so much information)...
I think I need to take care of catergorizing that next.
To all... Thanks a million for the help.
Framing starts next week... I'll set up pics and notes for anyone who may be interested.
Check out this sticky on insulation: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1742 Yes, I would recommend wearing long pants, long sleeves, and either a dust mask or respirator if you have one and gloves & goggles. Almost forgot...a little trick when getting ready to put up insulation...cover any exposed skin w/ Baby Powder. I know this sounds strange, but it helps keep the fibers from sticking into your skin. It's not too bad if you're installing in the wall. In fact, I was wearing shorts when I did the walls. BUT, when I did the insulation over my head in the joists, wear the long clothes and eyeprotection and mask. That stuff starts falling, and gets in the air and can be pretty nasty.Aaron as far as the mineral or rock wool... Would you need any protective clothing to install this stuff?
There are a couple of others. I believe Knaupf (I think I spelled it right) has a rigid fiberglass w/ similar ratings, and there's another, but I'm having brain fart and can't remember the name. :D AaronAlso is there any other recommended fiberglass besides 703.
Steve you do so much for all of us on the board I'd thought I take a few minutes to do something for you.
Hope you like it.....
Hey, thanks - perfect likeness of me staring at a pizza fresh from the oven but still too hot for painless popping into the pie-hole... Steve
Hey Steve, what happend to your avatar icon?
I found a different vendor for Titebond, and edited my post above.
There's certainly a difference in price if you shop around.
Carl, I screwed up and didn't check the size of guitarguy's "gift", deleted my old one first and the new one was 'way too big a file size - I may go back to the one John didn't like, I think most people here know it was just fun - dont' have my laptop hooked up to the LAN at the moment (those files aren't on the machine I'm using at the moment), maybe tonight... Steve
Oops, found it...
Z, you got that right - anywhere from under $4 per large tube locally, to over $20 for the same size on the net. Caveat Emptor... (which is latin for "beware of empty wallet")
I tried to get that pic as small as possible but animated gifs just are too large for the most part. Most people who use them use a link from another site where they have them stored to display as there icon elsewhere...
Anyway here is your old one I had it saved also.
Thanks G, I still appreciate the thought and effort - I found I'd not lost the old one after all, just wanted a change... Steve
This should be sufficient: http://www.johnlsayers.com/Studio//Imag ... /Up3/2.jpg Although most people just do this http://www.johnlsayers.com/Studio//Imag ... /Up3/9.jpg i.e. cover as much of your body as possible, and wear thick gloves (rubber?) and a mask. Eye goggles are good. (There is absolutely no need for a Level A HAZMAT suit, nor Newt Suit. :) )Would you need any protective clothing to install this stuff? [insulation]
I can only say THANK GOD i don't need to use the Newt Suit. I mean I have a few sets in the closet but they're so hot to wear in the summer...
Here's where I was gonna turn this into a gag but I don't want to offend anyone, so use your imagination :D
Thanks for all the help.
My latest batch of Sealant I picked up Friday is the OSI sealant. I'll check and see how the drying went when I get home. I think so far, I liked the Grabber sealant. The Tite Bond is a little more oily feeling and doesn't come off the hands as easy. The OSI appears to be ok. I've only used 1 3/4 tubes so far though. I'll keep everyone updated.
