are you refering to the outer room? that is based on one of bolts' golden ratios
No, I'm referring to the final dimensions inside the final complete room, as measure from the hard surface of the inner-leaf in all directions. The ratio of the outer-leaf is not relevant. All acoustics of the room itself happen within the inner-leaf, not the outer leaf. The dimensions of the outer leaf as compared to those of the inner leaf are only useful for calculating MSM isolation.
how can i check how the sound is getting into the room? if its the walls or floor? i guess putting my ear to the wall. then the floor to check?
The easiest way is to use a stethoscope. If you have a friend who is a doctor or nurse, then borrow one from them.
where can i get a guide to RFZ design?
There's a large amount of information on RFZ right here on the forum. I'm not sure where the original RFZ patents can be found, but they might be on the RPG web site. - Stuart -
Hi Stuart Just to let you guys know that i have continued with the construction. I have taken note of all your suggestions, i have removed the screed from the floor slab and redoing it with a 50mm 1:1 cement mix. Hopefully i can do the screeding this weekend....be back then
Great! It would be good if you could post some photos of your build, and more details about what you are doing. - Stuart -
will post some pics. ive put a cailing in the outer room and sealed it. next up is building the door frame and screeding the floor. then to build the inner room which i planned to use wood but looking through some posts i see that metal/aluminium frames are used. its much cheaper than wood and im considering it cause of the costs. what shortcomingf, if any, will this have?
Yippee....got all the materials needed for the brickwork for the control room doorway and for the cement screed for the floor. took us three days to get the work done and close the opening between the control room and studio. ive attached some pics next is the laying of the plastic pipes for all cabling.

Now that the floor and doorway is done we have the final dimensions. Ive attached a JPEG of the stud framing and ceiling trusses as well as the sketchup file. I now have to design the RFZ......i am trouble with this mainly with the angles of the side walls. Is there a thread dealing with ray tracing? Or maybe a helpfull soul could help me with this? (the sketchup file attached)

There are several threads on ray-tracing, but unfortunately I don't have any bookmarked. But if you use the "search" feature on the forum, you should be able to find information on how to do it. - Stuart -
thanks...i have searched ans will do so again. ive stained the cement floor with an acid solution....will post some pics once the sealer is applied
Stuart offered me a great tutorial in my thread a few months back - it helped me out immensely! Perhaps start there.
Hi Andy can u put up the link to your thread?
ordered the wood for the walls and ceiling joists for inner room. 50 x 114 mm for walls and 50 x150mm for joists. wood will be treated and bottom rails sealed with a varnish/linseed oil mix. not sure if i am going to use nails or screws to put it together.....what is recommended method? screws or nails?
thanks...its a good explanation and i will do the same. feel a bit more confident about what is a daunting task for folk like me. Thanks Andy...and stuart
the wood has arrived......we start cutting to size over the weekend final room dimension 2750 X 3605 X 5542mm
the framing for the walls is complete.......pics soon
got the walls up and fixed to the floor. Joists are also in place and the batons have arrived. the electrical wiring is in place and so is the DB board. Pics to follow.
Attached are pics of the wood framing for the walls in the control room. for walls 105 x 50 mm planed SA Pine. The joists are 150 x 50 mm planed SA Pine
