Hi guys ...
Im back to this wonderfull place and once again with a beutiffull mission, to build a recording studio all over again !!
For those who dont now me here, 4 years ago i brought an idea and 8 months later i had a dream come true studio. All that process is in this topic, if you wish to see it : viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8109
You can see our results in www.gpro.co.mz or in the DjoGpro Youtube´s Channel.
This time i will have 2 off my colleagues working on this construction, and they will be the ones taking the lead. One is our record label manager ( Afra ) and the other one is our producer, singer, songwriter and sound engenier (Guert).
As for materials go, we saved everything that was on the other studio so, if we can design using those materials it would be great ...In the next post i will start describing the place..
I hope i can count with the "Tag Team" that worked on the last one and hopeffuly i can meet new people with this construction... I leave you with the result off my first Topic in this forum, i hope to do even better this time... :)
Best Regards
Joel
gXtudio v3.0 - Let´s do it Again ( Djo - Maputo - Africa )
Originally posted at johnlsayers.com, topic 15624.
So, let´s get started... :horse:
1. The new space
As you can see from the pictures, it´s one 22,7sqm room ( 3,85m x 5.9m ) with 3.15 m of height.
It has 1 door on one side and a row off wyndows on the other. ( pictures attached ).
Later i will try to put a floor plan of the space (but maybe it will take sometime, as i need to find a friend to do it )
2. The Goal : To make a recording/mixing studio
The majority off the time we only record voice or one instrument occasionaly. If there´s new possibilities with this space, maybe we can do it. But what we have in mind it´s a place to mix the tracks and record vocals and some small instruments. Is it worth it 2 record drums ? Or do a band reharsal room ? Iff the effort to do it it´s allmost the same as the original idea, maybe we should.
3. Materials
We have all the pink fiberglass and the wood framing still with us so we can use them with no problem. In fact we have all the materials from the other studio. If we can make a new design based on those, it would be perfect as the invesment would be "small" and we could "recycle" the other studio, in stead off trowing it away. ( in atached some pics of the project, to have an idea of the materials inside )
4. Sketch Up project
Later today i will attach the Google Sketch project, from the old studio (made by John), so we can use the exact measures of the material we have ...
----------------------
I hope we can do it once again ...

welcome back! so re-using everything you should be done sometime next week?
Hi Gulfo ... Long time no see. Welcome to my next adventure...
Man, that would be great !!! ehehhehe ... but here everything takes time.
Im opened to new sugestions, if it means improving the studio. What i would like is to use as much material as i can from the other studio, i think we can use all the wood and insulation ...
Im trying to attach the Sketch Up file from the old studio but it has 1.1 MB ... I can email anyone who would be interested in working on it ...
Best Regards
Djo
yeah, send it to me and i'll trim it down so we can all share it...
i think you should be able to reuse quite a bit of the materials if not all of it. here's a template based on your dimensions and photos. if you can verify the dimensions and let me know what needs to be adjusted.
Hi Glen ...
Thank´s for the file ...
I´m wayting for some exact dimensions from the place, with the details that were missing first. As soon as i have them i will post here ... But it looks perfect for now !
Any ideas on the design ? :)
Best Regards
Djo
i think i would try to fit in something like you had so the space over the CR front could hold the AC ducts. the large beam overhead on the one side would have to be encased slightly with that approach. but a matching soffit on the window side could be added to mirror it. the inset could also be used for the actual air flow in the room so it wouldn't be wasted.
Glen ...
Here are the complete measurements off the room ...
Were ready to go on our side, when will you have free time to put a design together ?
The v2.0 was a room inside a room, something we dont need on this case, so im expecting a easier and faster construction :)
The maind diferences i can see betwen the old one and this one is :
1. SUN LIGHT - - - if we can use the sun light it would be great
2. MORE SPACE - - - so we can add a sofa for the guest/listener/client
3. BIGGER BOOT - - - the studio is @ a school, we will be recording some children choirs, so maybe we can have a bigger boot.
4. NEW IDEAS - - - anything we can think off ...

i'm thinking the space by the windows could be the booth and the larger area the CR but let me play with it a bit and see because the main beam could be centered in the CR and might not present a major issue there.
Hi Glen ...
This are my original ideas. What you think ?
OPTION A : having the possibility off using the sun light ...
OPTION B :
OPTION C : I think is the best use of space, but it dosent make sense as the softfits are in the place off the door ...
Any sugestion anyone ?
Best Regards
Djo
option b is what i'm thinking would work.
I'd also say B is the best choice, but,
There'll have to be an entrance to that booth which I suppose will be between the soffits, so there will have to be accessibilty around the desk. Also the windows will probably have to be beefed up depending on loudness levels and outside constraints.
maybe something like this?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ...
NICE !!
So, we dont go for the OPTION B ? What´s the downside off it ? This option re-uses the material right ?
If this is the one to go, will do it , but if it´s not too much to ask, if we can the option B sketch, just to make a comparative decision, it would be perfect ! Ether way, i like this one also ...

or go back to John's original design and size it down to fit the new space. use the space over the front of the CR for the necessary ducting etc. use glass blocks on the upper part of the CR to let in natural light.
i think the main support beam in the middle there is going to be challenging to isolate. you may have to add some additional soffiting on the front or rear CR wall to accommodate the air ducts underneath the beam on its way to the booth.
you should be able to reuse the majority of materials from the last build. it's all inside out walls and ceiling.
Glen ...
Thank you ! Sory for the late response ...
Some questions now rase :
1. I was not planning to do the ceiling as this time around it´s a concrete ceiling. I was planning to use some clouds to absorve ...
2. Last time around we did a room inside a room. This time i was planning to put the wood frames directly on the wall.
What do you think ?
Actually i would go with your design now, the one before this. I think we have more space and if were doing it again, i prefer to do a new one ... Having in mind that i would still use the same material as i will need to assemble it in a diferent way, but the same material. If you agree, can you please send your version finalized so i can start the building ?
Best Regards
Djo
here's what it looks like with a booth and a dividing wall to form the CR leaving the rest exposed to the concrete. windows would be partially blocked for isolation and another set added on the back of the CR. isolation booth could have a damped membrane floor. clouds in the CR would try to equalize the beam running through it. over the clouds would be hangers. in booth the ceiling would be suspended down to mask AC and add absorption.
Glen ...
Thanks for the v14...
1. I see you prefer the old model on your´s . . . I prefeer the other one, but if this one is going to perform better...we do this one.
2. The clouds are just perfect for me, it will make the job easyer ... As it´s a rental place, as simple the better ...
3. If you can please close the design with the acoustic treatment so we can start construction. I will "break" it to pieces, put the measures, print it and give it to the carpinter who will execute the design ...
4. If we can start on monday it would be great ...
Thanks allot !
Djo
i think this one will be easiest to construct and treat. most of the treatment could move with you later if needed. you're basically building an isolation booth and shaping the CR with a couple of walls.
Hi Glen ...
How was the weekend, all good ?
Any idea when the final SKP file will be done ?
Were ready to start on our side ...
Best Regards
Djo
given the room layout was incorrect it will take a few days to adjust...
Will be here ansious 2 start ...
Thank You
Best Regards
Djo
try this one out. use painter tape or equiv to lay it out to ensure sizing. the bulk of the dividing wall is now under the beam. same approach as before, effectively creating an isolation room for the booth and using some isolation walls between the booth and the also on the window side to shape it. the rest is the slats etc you have left over to treat the space. if you want to build up all the way to the ceiling cool. if not, cap the front wall cavities.
