Hi guys, here is my design of my new house studio thet will be built in next month.....I'd like to know any suggestion for the best result as I can reach. All is possible now exept the stairs and the mini local beside the stairs.....the rest is only on the paper so help me if U want. thanx in advance. The house will be in Italy bologna. The height will be 3,25 mt. and all the floor is under the earth level so underground. Thanx again

while the CR room ratio is a bit off, due to the stairs and not wanting to make the CR smaller, but you might consider making the room a bit narrower to get a better ratio. 1:1.02:1.42 h-w 1.02 I w-l 1.39 IV h-l 1.42 +IV
Hi Gulfo and thanx for the reply....yes I'm thinking to expand a little the CR but I only increase the lenght cause the other side is stopped by the stairs wall.......so I can expand a little to the live room and reduce the live room. I think also to reorganize all spaces ( exept for the stairs obviously ) but I can reach nothing better to the draw I've posted...If You are a best suggestion feel free to tell me...thanx again :D
Fenders, Can you post the dwg file? That is a nice height to begin with. How much isolation do you need? IOW, what STL (sound transmission loss) do you require of the separating walls? The CR (i assume you mean the production room) is sized ok, but after isolation walls and ceiling, these dimensions will be reduced. As you mentioned before, you should stretch the length a bit to retain as much volume as possible. Cheers, John
Sure I'll post it tonight...Feel free to made any variation if You want... About isolation I think I need the necessary to make the better plays in the CR (yes I mean Control Room my write on the draw Production Room...sorry), I'd like to make the live room sound best as possible to record drums and sometimes 3-4 people band together if necessary, and the wall should be isolate that from the CR in order to ear only the sound from the monitors and record the best sound possible. Sorry for my bad english... Thanx for your help.
Fenders, I look forward to it. By the way.... Ho vissuto a Roma per un anno e mezzo indietro negli anni 75-76 :P But I visited Bologna many times... Mmmmm great Lambrusco at/near the college there.. haha. Cheers, John
Great John!! Do you remember tortellini or tagliatelle....or only lambrusco?!?.... Here is the dwg file hope this help ....bye

one idea might be to swap the CR and live room. use the air lock and space behind the stairs for isolation booths.

mmmm very very interesting idea Glenn!!! Can you put the measures on your draw please? In order to have the cubature.... Maybe one problem.....I think the CR need more acoustic treatment then live room and now in this new situation I'll have 2 windows in the CR.......I thought to use movable panels to slide away when I need to open windows....Do you think could work? How do you draw acoustic treatment in the CR in this new configurations? Thanx a lot!!! :thu:
Another detail that I've forget in past 3d.....in the CR will be a floor fan coil under the window beside the desk, in the live room there will be one hanging on the wall about in the middle of the long side, in front of the entrance door. Will be hanged about at 35-40 cm from the ceiling. Just another one question..... Do You think I need floating floor in the Live room, in the CR, or both? Is necessary for your experience or not? Thanx
the image is scaled to your original dimensions but is only a rough draft for the idea and not final in terms of dimensions, angles, etc etc. not sure about the fans - you mean the AC unit blowers? not sure if you need to float the floor or not - depends on how much sound/noise is getting in, getting out, or necessary for your needs.
Ok.. your idea is very good so your experience and opinion i very aprreciated, can you suggest me how to continue in this direction to create the best dimensions and angle exc... Yes with fancoils I mean the unit blowers and now I think that I can decide to install both of them hanging on the wall and not on the floor, maybe it's the best choice. About the floating floor, cause now I'm in condition to planning all before (the space is now under construction so I have all the time...)I'd like to make the best choice to have a good CR and a good live room.....the best solution for this specifical space. Many many thanx for your help and idea Glenn, hope to hear you again, bye Ale
Try to draw in sketchup......terrible experience...I have empy walls and strange window...... I need to practice a lot....here is the beginning... Please help......I have the component out of scale...
File not preserved: Green studio.skp
...hi sorry but when you dowload component in sketchup they should be in scla with project? Isn't it?!?! I have a drum more larger then the studio....... Thanx and sorry.....
here's what i recommend to novices with CAD programs - start simple. create a "to scale" floor plan showing all the doors, windows, pipes, obstructions, etc etc. and add some comments on things above like beams and ducting etc. include photos of the space so we can see things directly (if the space exists). don't try to load up lots of components or get fancy with the 3D stuff because it can take a while when you're starting out and really we want to have a communications vehicle more than a polished CAD file.
Hi Glenn....If you take a look at the sketchup file attached You will see what I've done....I've tried to design with sketchup yuor idea but I've got some problems with windows.....After that I've tried to download one rock drum kit in order to have an idea of the spaces and dimesion with your new reorganizations..... I'll put the pictures of the spaces as is now but At the moment I have not the plumbing and wiring and only the wall beside the stairs. I find your solution very interesting but I'd like to have a best idea for the dimensions and spaces so I've tried 3D design with sketchup. Thanx Ale
maybe something like this? (to scale)

WOW....Yess!! exactly something like this....Glenn you are a great designer! Many thanx.... I'm wondering one thing....cause now I have no wall betwenn live room and CR cause as you know is under contrunction, maybe the best thing to do is to make a shell with the right form and angle unsing wood and isolation for the structure like many pics I've seen here on this forum, do You think is the best solution instead to use panels over the wall to make the right form? Thanx and sorry for my english.... Ale
if you had the option to use block for the dividing wall that would be nice. otherwise the normal double leaf frame and drywall (gypsum wall board) approach will work.
I've thought to use special insulating brick 20 cm depth for separate CR from LR and double leaf to make the 'form' to the CR. At this point I can build up the separation wall not perpendicular but in line with the 'diamond' figure of the CR and continue the structure with double leaf wooden wall. Do You think will work? The window will be in the brick wall. Another question....the right dimension of the windows ? Normally? And how much from the the floor? Thanx Ale
i'd just make the wall straight and use the framed walls to create the angles and house the traps. one of the dividing walls (live room side) will be isolating and will contain the window. the other window can site in the treatment frames with some isolation tied into the block wall. this allows you to use all the other space around there for the traps and treatments. being in a concrete bunker (for all intents) you'll need the space for trapping.
Yes You're right! I thought to use 2 brick wall but your solution is better cause this way I can cure the acoustic treatment in the CR. Now I have to look here in the forum the best way to create the framed walls and traps in order to have a complete project to follow the day when the works will begin.... In the meanwhile thanx again ahd happy holidays to all !!! Happy new year!! :shot:
Hi guys and happy new year!... I'm looking for some videos to 'capture' the best way to build a frame wall. I'm planning the new solution posted by Glenn, and I'm trying to find all the materials available on the web in order to have a clear idea to make the best work. At the moment I find this site http://www.thegeekgroup.org that contains a lot of video tutorials of many topics and also 'building studio recordings'.... Anyone of you have other specifical site to take a look? PS For Glenn, can I take the right angles for the framed wall by your picture or do You suggest a particular measures? Thanx again to all...
the drawing should be to scale if you import it into SU and stretch it to the correct length and width as measured by the inner points of the wall.
I'll try to make something in SU even if till now I've made only disasters..... :horse: The original draw from you have started the new design was in scale...so I think the measures of your project are just right. I think I'll have only 2 pair of monitors in the studio, and I prefer to avoid to put one of them inside the corner, maybe this way the angle of the corner will change or not? I think I put them behind the desk on a specific stand. I'll put some pics of the actual sistuation soon.... Thanx again
