i'd just build out the isolation walls and then treat the walls and ceiling to make it a nice lively acoustic space.
so keep the same shape and dimensions and everything, just beef up the mass on the walls and then treat with acoustic products? would you use mostly absorption or utilize diffusion as well?
either beef up the existing walls or open them, beef them up, add insulation and add an inner wall to increase isolation significantly. i would use scattered absorption to create a diffusive space. small acoustic absorbers all around with lots of exposed wall. stack the corners ala super chunk style. test. if it needs more absorption or more reflections, you can add more absorbers or some panels on the corners to adjust. in fact, you might make a number of the absorbers with panels on one side so you can flip them around and change the room acoustics. same on the corner traps hang panels which could be taken off and stored when you want a deader space.
Cool! I'd love to hear some feedback/opinions from everyone on which configuration they think would be best and why! Looking to start this project ASAP, and hopefully have it completed by the end of 2010.
