Hi again all, I'm about to put the walls up in my new studio, exciting times ahead! (thread about it here)
Now I've looked and looked and looked, and I cannot find much about cloud panel design. So here's a question: my ceiling is going to be sloping up toward the back of the control room, is there any point in curving the cloud panel or does is simply need to be flat? Just so I'm sure, a cloud panel is simply a slab of OC 703 or similar framed and wrapped in fabric, is that right? Thanks for enlighting me, or directing me toward a post already covering this topic!
cloud panel design

Yeah, your pretty right.
The same way you find the 1st reflection point along your side walls(mirror technic)
you do to the cieling above the mix position.
The cloud is also a great spot to place down lights with-out compromising your "Air tight leaf"
here a pic of my dodgy cloud, but there are a heap of good ones if you do a search.
Note the live chicken: That's a very important ingredient for a successful cloud! :)
But the question is, do you have to cook the chicken for ultimate sound absorbtion, and if yes, which receipe should I use?
Thanks a lot Lillith for taking the time to post with your pix, much appreciated! Is it 703 OC you've used, at which thickness? Also, do you have to fit them at them same distance from the ceiling than the thickness of the fiberglass slab used, ie. assuming you used 100mm do you have to fit them 100mm from the ceiling, or is it a question of fitting, measuring the response, and fine-tuning by moving them a bit this way or that way?
There are two options with those clouds - you can add a solid (plywood) backing or not.
If you don't the insulation is lifted off the ceiling thus lowering the absorption frequency, if you do you can angle the cloud thus breaking the floor to ceiling parallel standing wave.
The best recipe is Coq au vin - throw away the chook and drink the vin and everything will sound better. :)
Provided it is CHILEAN wine, of course! :)drink the vin and everything will sound better.
Only if it was grown under Aussie viticultural and oenology standards :)Provided it is CHILEAN wine, of course! :)drink the vin and everything will sound better.
Being French I will say no more... :inn:
Thanks John for your reply - do you mean something like that, in the case of no plywood backing?
Does the cloud 1/ need to be parallel to the above ceiling, and 2/ at the same distance from the ceiling than its own thickness, or is it a case of adjusting and finetuning?
The 25cm is the thickness of the beams, the screed is about 100mm thick and contains the underfloor heating for the above storey, with an underlay and oak floorboards above it.
