Rod pretty much says you can go either way in his book but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on which would be more preferable from experience?
I've got two doorway locations that will need one design or the other - one is the main entrance (from outside), the other is from the live room into a vocal booth (which is also the only way through to the control room).
Double door versus super door

I think the double door scenario is the better way to go, especially for us DIY'ers.
Less pressure to get the one door exactly perfect. The other door will make up for the other: seals, build quality, etc.
That's my experience:

In my opinion: just like a double wall will almost always perform better than a single wall, I believe the same applies to doors. But a lot of variables come into play. Every situation is unique and presents its own challenges.
I had a preexting exterior door with weatherstripping that I decided to utilize. The other door is a superdoor minus the lead sheet and threshold- it wasn't needed!
Hi studio_drums,
Thanks a lot for the reply. That's the way I'd been leaning. And an air space between the doors seems to make the double door option the better of the two. It seems to me the only reason I wouldn't want to do the double doors is the inconvenience.
I just ordered doors for my basement studio build, I got 1 3/4" solid core doors on exterior frames. They come weather sealed, but I plan to beef them up with MDF, magnetic seals and add another jam with closed cell self adhesive weather stripping.
I also ordered some really great door sweeps from this site.

I am following the advice from rods book and this page, not going to notch the door, I am going to add a layer of MDF that closes to a second jam giving me a teared seal.
I didn't have the space or budget to do double doors, so this was the next best thing. I'll let you know my results if your interested...
Hi eightamrock,
Sounds good - do post back with results!
I have to be honest - I don't rock too hard at eight am! I don't do much of anything at eight am. :)
So I finally finished sealing up my first sound door. 2 tubes of soundseal and 2 packages of 3/8" backer rod later.
Its a 1 3/4" exterior patio door. Solid wood with 2 x 3/8" panes of class in an external frame with adjustable sill and standard vinyl weather seal. I plan to replace this with closed cell foam tape for a tighter seal.
Sound isolation is not ideal for drums or anything like that, but for a vocal booth, I am getting about 50 - 60db reduction. This is an estimate, I can have music blasting outside of the room to the point where I can't hold a conversation without raising my voice, in the room you can hear faint music. Mostly around the door seal, handle and trim.
I am going out this week to get a decibel meter so I can give you some better readings.
I still have to finish sealing the solid core doors, Ill let you know how they turn out, but I am imagining that out of the box they will need 'beefing up' based on my success with this door.
