hi guys, i've been looking at plans on this site and thinking about mine for ages, and i'm completely stuck... can anybody help me out or point me in the right direction please? here are the facts. the building is roughly 8,5m by 10,5. the ceiling is sloped from 2m to 4m. (red numbers on the side are the available heights) there is a support pile (named pole on the plan) which cannot be moved. so is the bathroom. the only possible place to make an entrance is where it's marked on the empty plan. i want 3 rooms: a control room, a live room and a booth. my intention is to record mostly live bands in there, so the live room is important. but so is the control room... :? i don't know anymore... somebody wants to chime in? thanks a lot, arjan

Floorplan.jpg looks like a good use of the area. Only issue that needs attention is you walk directly into your "air".
I agree, the first drawing is on the right track. Though I'd probably make the live room a bit smaller, so that the support pole is between the walls and not visible. Also, the vocal booth looks to be a bit small, maybe increase the size of it a bit.
There is the double problem of the column and the sloping ceiling. Maybe this will give some further ideas.

thanks for your input! andre, i like the idea of rotating the CR but i forgot to mention something... there is an inspection hole (for water) in the floor right next to the bathroom door which needs to be accesable at all times. also the bathroom door itself is a glass door and i don't want that one to be in my CR. so i tried to rearrange it a bit by making some kind of entry hall. good for smokers/unused marshall stacks... the only issues that come to mind is that all people/instruments traffic needs to go through the CR and that the CR is a bit smaller now. I also loose some height in the live room. the booth can now have 3,75m high ceilings but the live rooms max height is something like a small 3m sloping down to 2m. isnt that gonna be problematic for recording drums in the live room?

The last one you did what if you put the CR all the way in bottom left corner oriented the way it is now. The booth in front of it and the Live room where the CR is now. You would walk through the live room to get to the CR and Iso would be accesable in live room too. That way when they come in they get the wow factor off top by being presented with the live room first? Floorplan 2 is nice but seems like the field of vision is not so good in live room. Please tell me what program that is that you are using to do your layout? It seems like something that I can handle
hey rontal, the problem with putting the cr in the back is the ceiling height. the roof is sloped from 2m (6,6 ft) in the back to 4m (13,3 ft) in the front. so there is no possibillity to put the cr in the back of the building. then there is also the column, it would be cool if it was hidden in the walls. but maybe i can make the cr a bit wider? the max length i can get is 4,6m. so with sepmeyers ideal room ratio of 1 : 1,14 : 1,39 that would be H 3,3m W 3,76m L 4,6m the program that i'm using is photoshop. if you put all elements on different layers you can puzzle a bit...
Have a look at Cox's ratios too

hi andre, thats an awfull lot of ratios! there are some strange ones in there too, like 1 : 1,42 : 1,42 thats a square room?! isnt that "forbidden"? since in my last plan the room lenght is fixed, and i want the ceiling height and width as big as possible (without giving up too much live room floor) i thought 1 : 1,14 : 1,39 was my best shot. but it is not mentioned in the xls file for a 50m3 room. does that mean its not a good ratio for a room that small?
cox did an analysis with the latest modeling knowledge available. that list is the best. If there were not some surprises, it would not be worthwhile publishing the data. the 1:1.14:1.39 falls in the second best list. you thought the first one had lots of ratios? Hah! Have a look at the second best list! It is a 1.9 MB file! Andre
so my best shot would be cox's 1 : 1,42 : 1,67 that's 2,81m : 3,99m : 4,69m first i tought i could have a ceiling of 3,3m but its a maximum of 3m. damn that sloped roof... more drawing to do... you dont think its a problem that all people/instrument traffic needs to go trough the CR? thanks, arjan
hi, this is my latest try. is the location of the doors outside-hall-cr-liveroom not going to be a problem? they form one straight line now. this is for easy acces with amps and drums. if i dont line them uplike this i'll have to make the entrance hall wider and then i loose some liveroom real estate again... what do you guys think? thanks, arjan

How about something like this? Same size control room, but rotated 90 degrees, to give you a hall between the rooms, so that you don't have all your traffic through the CR. It takes a tiny slice of your both and live room, but not much. Might work. - Stuart -

hi stuart, thanks for the input! at first it seemed like a good idea. but i think that hallway would be too small to be good. it would barely be 70 cm nearby the collumn... i think i'll go for my last layout. arjan
Here's another idea, very similar: Move it over right up to the pole, and even put the pole part way into your CR wall. Yes, you'd have to build around the pole to avoid flanking, but you can gain several inches like that, I think. And if you were to take 10 cm off each side of your control room (make it slightly narrower), you'd have a hall about a meter wide. Not too bad, really. FWIW. - Stuart -

is your plan also comercial work? think about your local building codes. cheers mika
hey guys, if i want to avoid "walking into my air", which i will do in floorplan4.jpg, would it be better if i do something like this? i could buid another shell for the hallway with its own proper ceiling, decoupled from the CR, but coupled to the outer wall (lack of space). that way the hall wouldnt be part of the air between the leaves. am i right doing this?

Yes sir, that is a good idea.
