This is a duplicate to a post I left on Ethan's site. I'm getting very close to doing this work, so I thought I would spread the joy :)

I'm about to start filling the joists above my studio with drywall strips as suggested in Rod's book. The section shows a 1/4" air gap between the first strip of drywall and the subfloor above.
Considering the two layers of drywall that form the ceiling below, doesn't the 1/4" air gap create in effect a 3 leaf system : ceiling/air/drywall strips/air/floor ?
I was thinking that I should snug the strips right up against the floor?
Appreciate any thoughts.

Shaun
Filling Joists with drywall strips : why the 1/4" space

Yes, that would create a multiple leaf. Which page in Rod's book is that?
I'm looking at pgs 66-68 of Rod's book. Figs 4.19 and 4.20 clearly show that the drywall is tight to the deck above. I think what may have caused your confusion is this:
"Fit the board so that it is about 1/4" from your existing floor joist, hold it in place temporarily..." pg 66. However, if you look at the sentence just before that- "... you can begin by installing gypsum board directly against the bottom of your existing deck assembly.
Hope that clears things up a little.
Andy
That clears it up -- thanks very much ---
I don't know how many times I read that passage and was blind to what it was actually saying....luckily, I understood the principles [and had good support :) ]
Now to figure out how to reduce the amount of sound travelling into the supply and return air ducts...any thoughts on that one?
