First, Thanks to everyone who's helped me out and given me some great feedback/ideas as I prepare for my new build.
Backgroud:
I am a full time touring musician who has been home from tour for a while, so I've basically been reading this site and Rod's book non-stop (what else am I going to do with my time?!?!?!). We are adding a new room at an already fully functional studio on Long Island, NY. You can check out the studio as it exists now at http://www.vudustudios.com. The space is at the rear of the facility with artist sleeping quarters/lounge (usually more drinking with these guys than sleeping!!!) between it and the main live room. We record almost exclusively rock acts (loud guitars drums / etc.). My budget is $7500 and I'm looking at $3500 for materials right now before glass (still waiting on my glass quote from a friend).
The Room:
The dimensions of the room are 21ft Long x 16ft Wide x 12ft Tall
The Plan:
The facility is on the first floor with no basement on a cement slab, so I am not going to float the floor.
I will be using the Mass-Air-Mass principle for the walls. I will be using double layers of 5/8" Drywall with Green Glue between the layers. First layer will be vertical. Second layer will be horizontal. I will be using heavy duty steel studs (the owner has told me this is required because of the zoning). Roxul AFB 2" insulation will be used in all the walls. On the inner wall to the facility, I will take down the drywall, add the insulation, and build my second wall. I am not sure yet if I will be able to add a second layer of mass to the other side of the pre-existing wall. I will use acoustic sealant around the perimeter of all walls.
The control room wall will be inside out design. A friend of mine is a cabinet builder and he is going to help me build the slot resonators and the diffusers that Glenn posted at http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10495. I will be soffit mounting a pair of Event 20/20s. I'm pretty sure that John posted somewhere here that he tried that and they sounded great.
The window is going to be 3-sided along the whole front of the room to open it up to the live room. I will be using laminated glass. I will use a silicone bead between the panes. They will be 3ft tall. I based the idea off of the build I saw at http://johnlsayers.com/Studio/Mainpage/MP-Egan.htm. The inside panes will be 3/8" thick and the outside panes will be 1/4" thick.
Doors will be heavy solid core doors with rubber seal around the edges.
The live room ceiling will be constructed using SSP Clips attached to the building structure and RC-2 channel. It will have double layer drywall with Green Glue between the layers as well.
There is proper HVAC already running into the room from the other rooms, so I will just have to attach a vent to my ceiling.
I am going to put down a laminate wood floor in both rooms with a sound pad underneath the layer.
Conerns:
Are the slot resonators and diffusers placed at appropriate spots in the control room?
Do I need to make my glass 1/2" and 3/8" thick or am I OK with what I have planned here?
I attached the layout for the room and the side view of the control room.
Any thoughts before I start to order materials and tear apart the room as it exists now? Thanks again to everyone for all of your help up to this point!!!
Ready For Construction? - Any final thoughts?

what is the speaker soffit pointing at? it looks to be about the middle of the room - just shy of the back couch and a bit too far for the mix desk...
Hey Glenn. Yeah, you're def right. What's the best way for me to approach this? I don't know if i can get the angle I'd need because it would probably be too steep to keep the speakers in place. Does anything else jump out at you? Thanks so much!what is the speaker soffit pointing at? it looks to be about the middle of the room - just shy of the back couch and a bit too far for the mix desk...
the CR angled ceilings - you're planning on making them false ceilings? this way the boundary walls are rectangular and the false ceiling hides additional treatments.
Yeah. The plan was to make a false ceiling (the actual room height is 12ft.) and have hangers overhead as well as Roxul in the ceiling with a bead board on the surface.
I'm not quite sure what you mean here. Can you explain? Thanks Glenn! I appreciate your help more than you know!this way the boundary walls are rectangular and the false ceiling hides additional treatments.
