Hi guys, i am starting to plan my acoustics for my control room first, below are pics of what i intend to do, please comment and any suggestions would be appreciated. The wall panels will be 50mm deep and the bass traps in the corners i am deciding on either going the superchunks way or a cheaper alternative would be to leave the gap behind the corner frame empty. (corner traps will be 100mm deep for the frame, should this be efficient. I was planning on using rockwool for my panels and bass traps but 703 47.5 is cheaper in my area and more readily available. does this matter. room size is 4m in front, 6m at back, 3m height and the walls are splayed, the length of the splayed wall is 4.97

47.5kg/m3? should be OK. also consider the ceiling for clouds. check out Kendale's clouds if you want ideas for some really nice clouds
Thanks again for your input glenn, i need to definatley credit you and andre on your input in my build, its greatly appreciated! The wrt 47.5, im not too clear on what you mean with m3? but i checked on the specs it and it says, energylite 47.5 sold in rolls of 10000 x 1200 x 25/40 or 50, there is a m3 figure on the spec sheet and it reads for the 25 - 0.364, 40 - 0.512 and 50 - 0.425 r you looking for this info or is it just as i thought cubic metres.... which should be better in your oppinion for the panels and for the bass traps. would you recommend superchunks for the corner traps or just a frame with a air gap behind? I am definately going to put up clouds aswell, im deciding if i should install clouds or angle the actual ceiling in front as its a new ceiling installation. Keep well

Per cubic metre. The full unit is kilograms per cubic metre. Andre
thanks andre, on the spec sheet it says Volume per roll m3.
OFF TOPIC: I watched The condemend last night and i couldnt help but think that Glenn looks alot like steve austin in the movie haha!
Me again! Ok Guys, here is my final question before i send my order through for the material i will need to build my panels. Glenn you said that 47.5 kg/m3 resin bonded glasswool insulation should be ok, is there perhaps something better you think i should rather try use? I can get 47.5 kg/m3 or 16, 18, 24, 64 or 96, which density could you recommend for my acoustic wall panels and what depth do you think i should make the panels - ie: 25mm, 40mm or 50mm? do you also recommend the cloth i use for the panels front to be touching the insulation or should i leave a small 10mm air gap between the cloth and wool in the front? perhaps this is not even relevent with no difference between the two? should i then also use the same density for the corner superchunks bass traps as the wall panels?
any advice?
That 47,5 kg/m3 is what you need. for walls and basstraps it's good stuff. Density for absorbing pannels ain't that important it's the volume of the device that makes the difference (tho stiffer stuff will absorb more bass and reflect more high. But then we're talking great density (kg/m3) differences.). Same goes for the "thickness" (read volume) of wool in between your walls. And that 47,5kg/m3 is best in all frq ranges, for what it's worth.
anyone with advice on making the best choices of material for the panels before i order? Going........going.........going............
hehe, we posted at the same time so euh, re-fresh ;)
haha, posted at the exact same time! thanks ro, should i go for the 40mm or 50mm 45.7 for the panels?
again!
As I said, more volume (thicker wool) is better. For making panels I'd advise even thicker than 50mm. .. . bigger is better :)
..and again! whahaa
one last thing, should i stuff the panels completely full and then cover it with cloth or should i say make the depth of the panel 10mm deeper so that there is a air gap between the cloth front of the panle or is it ok if the cloth touches the 47.5? this is gonna be my first attempt at a panel!
thanks again for your advice Ro! My girlfriend and i had a good laugh yesturday, since i started building this studio and reading through this forum my mind seems to have left me! :? and i seem a little confused and in my own world lately....... i think im losing it... haha

Cloth can tough the wool, no problem. The cloth is merely for estethics, it has no acoustic value (unless you use heave/close cloth). Making a resonater panel device, tho, is another business. But this stuff is all over the forum. Have you checked them stickies in this acoustics section? There's a sticky with links to panel constructions. Check'm out! Why did you and ye wife had a laugh on this forum? what's so funny, punk. ;)

I went to the local linen shop today to have a look at the material available for my panels. Would you guys recommend using butchers linen for the panels or what should i look for when choosing the material to use for the panels covering??
any suggestions?
Burlap? Itsa coarse woven fabric usually made from jute. So it's open weave (well, comes in different types) and almost fire resistant. there's a wide choice of colors too, tho brown is the most common color to get.

Is burlap sometimes called hessian? i cant find burlap anywhere in sa, they dont know the name, i saw some hessian at the hardware store and it looks similar to the above picture, could it be burlap just called hessian over here? What other options would you suggest that looks more asthetically pleaseing thaN burlap?
Yup, Hessian is Burlap aka jute "A plain fabric of approximately square construction woven from jute." A little GOOGLE search got me there in just one hit. Come on people use that search option! Here in the Netherlands its called Jute as well. Type of used materials are depending on your device (what kinda trapping do you need) you need atleast some fire resistant cloth. Openweave for broadband. Heaver or less openweave for basstraps if you don't wanna loose to many "highs". Painting the cloth might only work on basstraps (painting it makes it closed)
Thanks Ro, there is so much knowledge on this forum that i sometimes forget to google aswell, my bad! I am building broadband absorbers this time round for my control room, my frames r complete and my 47.5 50mm fibre has arrived so all i need now is to get the cloth and put it all together, i have two more quick questions. 1. will the fibre not get through the burlap and into the air? do you recommend anything between the burlap and 703? 2. would it be best to close the panel up at the back with wood or would it be better to leave the back of the panel the same as i would do the front so that any sound can enter from the back of the panel?
