Sorry for the hijacking... Instead spending energies like that.... Please Ethan, Jean, xPace etc.. what about keeping helping me out in my post..., I have a real garage I'm a musician, and I'm experimenting like crazy trying all you guys are telling me for a wile just because I love good sounding stuff. What is that big peak at about 500hz? it's not more important than the low end stuff? maybe my room has already enough absorption built in? my last questions are in my last post in page 8, Eric vanished.. I hope his OK. http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... &start=105 thanks in advance
Dude... are you kidding me? -AE

This thread stopped being about my question a long time ago and I realize now that it's kinda my fault.
Not at all your fault! You asked reasonable questions, and hopefully my posts were useful. It really is not difficult, and there's no need for you to get into any math. Corner traps and reflection points are indeed pretty much all you need to (and can) deal with.
Are these goals attainable in my room?
Yes, but it's too small to record all of those at once. One at a time should be okay. If you still have questions, let's hear them. Hopefully there will be no further hijacking of this thread. --Ethan

In a small room like that, I guess smaller than my room..., I suggest to put absorber where you have space until you feel it's enough and only if you feel it sound better, mostly to avoid ear damaging reflections... ceiling , that available floor to ceiling corner, that small space near the tricorners above the speakers.. some curtains on the windows...etc.. keep it simple, don't go crazy like I did, it's not good.. also you have windows and doors there so probably some low end escape from there already .... keep it simple otherwise you'll end up like me http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... &start=105

timo, I swing a hammer if the nail gun is down...I don't know acoustics and never intimated I did. Now get back over to your book signing and let phantom power have his thread back. He has gone through enough already :)

A couple of questions: -How would I go about using a calculator for a room like this? That being said, I've never used a room calc even for a regular rectangular room.
If I was you, I will keep it simple, go by ears...

-I've got three 4" rockwool panels that I was planning to fit into the cove for some bass trapping. Should I put something reflective on the fronts of these so they don't absorb too much of the higher frequencies along with the bass?
try the way they are first and then listen , if they absorb too much highs cover them with something reflective.

-I was given some raw Johns Manville panels. There's a 2.5", 2", 1.5" and 1". As far as I can tell, the 2" and 1" are 6lb density and the others are 3lb. Where would be the best place to put these for now? Eventually, I figure I'll need at least 1 or 2 clouds over the mix position and drums. And I'll need something on the wall behind mix position as well as other walls and corners. Since I don't have the material to get all that done right now, where would the ones I DO have be best served?
put the 1" and 2.5" together , put the 2" and 1.5 together and make two 3.5" broadband panels, 6 pound side in front for the corners or 3 pound side in front for the walls.

I'm going to start by putting two of the 4" thick rock wool panels in the the corners of the cove area. The desk and speakers will sit just a little out in front of them. So what's good to put on the face of these?
Fabric

Which is my original point that all rooms need broadband in most corners and all first reflection points.
Actually that was my point.
LoL, you don’t recognize your own twisting technique?? I learned that from you  Actually I never made that point at all

The lamest thing anyone can post in a forum is to call someone else wrong, but offer no further explanation, as you did here:
Sorry, that's not true at all.
You make false claims as you know people will not go back a page to verify, right? Check this out, two posts down from where you quote me, explanations given upon request of OP: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=75745#75745

But since you like to argue, let's do that. I said a mode calculator will not help the guy assess his odd shaped room. You said I was wrong, and then said this proving my point:
room calculators are meant for rectangular rooms. yours is not
So that's Strike One.
Nice twist! :D This is your original statement which I contested:
Ethan Winer wrote:
And mode calculators are meant for designing new spaces, not to know how to treat an existing room.
No mention of ‘odd shaped room' in your original wrong statement, eh? Here are the first two twists that followed:
Hence my correct advice that mode calculators are meant for designing new rooms.
yup, that was not the contested part.
So now we're back to my original correct statement that a mode calculator is useful for designing a new room, but not for knowing how to treat an existing room like this :)
If that’s not twisting at its best, what is it? Cheers, Jean
and since you find it fun, lets continue:

Strike Two. But just to be sure I'm not misunderstanding your, uh, "viewpoint" - you acknowledge that axial modes have "more energy" than non-axials but then can't understand why axials matter more? Amazing.
How does having more energy equals ‘matter more’ or ‘most’, as you initially said?? Axial modes having more energy does not mean the other modes matter ‘less’ or ‘least’ and can be ignored. Which drum sound matters the most?
More amazing is that axials versus non-axials has nothing to do with this thread! You brought that up solely to berate me because my ModeCalc program intentionally shows axials only Strike Three.
For your info, I was made aware of your calculator and your controversial dismissal of the importance of non-axial modes by the link you provided later down! So, at the fear of making you feel berated because of a calculator I hadn’t heard of, I should have given the OP an intentionally incomplete reply to his question??? Should everybody give incomplete replies to questions at the fear of touching another topic you are sensitive about?? This is ridiculous!

Versus you who has only insults and a bad attitude. You showed up here only a few months ago and have a grand total of 26 posts. And you come out swinging at the regulars? Sheesh.
What insults? What bad attitude? You make a wrong statement and you become vulgar, aggressive insulting at a new comer (me) who contests it?

My apologies to the OP for having to wade through Jean's bullshit
Well done Ethan! Nice show of class and humility! Cheers, Jean
Phantom Power: I treated a room just like yours, with the same mix position you described. The doors positions are different, and the cove is wider (more than 8 feet). It can be done quite successfully (mixing in mind). Minor drawback: left/right symmetry. When you get a budget for that, let me know, I can give you details on how I went about it. It will be tricky for recording and practicing drums in there, though (Watch Timo's thread). :D Cheers, Jean
Sorry folks, I broke my own rule about arguing with idiots on the Internet. It won't happen again.
It is very low of anyone to post pictures of retarded or handicapped people being made fun of. Again, well done Ethan, says a lot about your moral values. Cheers, Jean
Jean - Ethan - i think maybe we need a lock on this thread. this isn't the forum for this behavior. if you two need to continue the discussion, please exchange phone numbers and email addresses. who knows? maybe after a couple of hours on the phone you'll be best friends...

Don't forget to flush :P As you, Ethan, so gently, put it; discussions on the internet aren't really usefull if the discussion turns into a war. Good discussions, on the otherhand, are more than welcome. Especially here in this great resource. And yes, Ethan, we do appreciate you taking your time to log on here and share your knowledge. But please keep it gently, right! So where were we... oh, yeah. Phantom's questions.

Yes, and I sent him a PM suggesting he should start a new thread. --Ethan
I still cannot figure out where you got that picture of my brother?
